Humber’s Police Foundations diploma program, offered on a full-time and online part-time basis, enjoys an excellent reputation within the criminal justice community. Our program’s current and relevant curriculum, developed with the insights and expertise of members of the college’s Police Foundations Advisory Committee, ensures you’ll learn the knowledge and skills needed to succeed in a justice related career. Practical courses allow you to learn about psychology, sociology, criminology, the criminal code, contemporary social and community problems, policing protocols and strategies, investigating and evidence, and conflict management. As well, instruction in fitness and lifestyle management will teach you about the importance of health and wellness and about the Constable Selection Process. Your professors, who have real-life work experience in public and private policing, will help you graduate with a range of security, problem-solving and administrative skills, and with a commitment to justice and to your community.

Graduates of the program will be subject to all requirements of the Ontario Constable Selection Process and local police requirements when applying for a position as a police constable in Ontario.

Humber’s Introduction to Commercial Jazz Music certificate is a performance-based program designed to help you assess and strengthen your skills. It solidifies your knowledge of the fundamentals of western music and develops your current performance skills through the jazz-specific areas of improvisation, repertoire development and small group ensemble performance. You will emerge from the program with a clearer understanding of the field and your own career potential within it, and as a stronger candidate for entry into postsecondary music degree and diploma programs. All courses have a particular focus on the commercial jazz field.

Humber’s Bachelor of Digital Communications degree program explores the dynamic media environment and the cultural, social, economic and political implications of digital innovation. Communications studies are becoming recognized as one of the most significant social sciences in the 21st century. Increasingly, worldviews are shaped through messages received from television, film, the internet, social media and a host of media arts, with profound impacts on how the world and the self are viewed. The construction of everyday lives and identities are negotiated through digital media and social networks which influence how we live, the products we produce and consume, and how we connect.

This program is rigorous and innovative, developing digital storytellers who are skilled in writing, visual communication, web applications and social media. You will build significant business acumen while working in an environment where creative ideas and methods cross-pollinate. As you gain technical competency, you will collaborate and innovate with peers, faculty and visitors, building personal communication and networking skills. Intensive lectures and labs provide direction and practical experience, sharpening technical skills and stimulating critical discourse, using student work as a starting point. Humber’s Media Communications diploma program is designed to meet industry demands within multi-faceted areas of the communications industry. Students graduate with a diverse range of marketable skills in photography, graphic design, web design and writing, social media, and videography.

In the program, you will learn how to:

  • Be effective transmedia storytellers across multiple platforms
  • Produce corporate video and audio for the web and other applications
  • Design, write for and edit effective websites
  • Shoot professional photographic images in both the studio and on location environments
  • Create and edit content using current software applications such as Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator and Premiere Pro
  • Learn how to establish, operate and market your business through a course in freelance and project management
  • Research, write and design communications such as media kits, blogs and brochures

Courses are designed with industry input, ensuring you are learning current and relevant information in state-of-the-art labs from industry experts – people who know the trends and effective methods of communications.

The first semester of this program is shared with the two-year Advertising and Graphic Design diploma, the three-year Journalism advanced diploma, the two-year Advertising and Marketing Communications diploma, and the three-year Public Relations advanced diploma programs, allowing the flexibility to continue in any of these five programs in second semester.

Learning Outcomes

  • Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:
    • Perform the duties, tasks and activities required of a media communications specialist in business, government and the not-for-profit sectors.
    • Research and gather information in print, audio and visual formats for communications’ products and strategies.
    • Analyze clients’ communications needs and implement solutions for business, government and the not-for-profit sectors.
    • Create audio, visual and print communications according to the client’s purpose and audience.
    • Design and create content for websites, using current software applications.
    • Capture, scan, download, save, store, and manipulate digital images using current software applications.
    • Produce corporate video and audio using current software applications.
    • Create and manage content for presentations at in-house meetings and media conferences.
    • Adhere to ethical and legal guidelines in communications practice.
    • Maintain professional relationships with business associates and clients.
    • Develop a portfolio of communications’ products and strategies for a variety of projects and audiences.

Work Placement
Students will participate in a mandatory work placement which takes place in the last semester of study. During that time, students hone their skills in professional environments, developing digital communication solutions. They build complete portfolios which, when they graduate, have them standing out from their competitors as corporate communications professionals.

Humber’s Bachelor of Community Development degree program offers a unique blend of theory and practice-based experience. Students learn how to work effectively in communities, how to build capacity for change, lead projects and advocate for people who face barriers to living a full and productive life. 

The first year of the program is comprised of a common platform of courses that includes psychology, sociology, human rights, interpersonal communication, counselling and ethics. The second year of study immerses students in the field of community development including foundational courses which explore leadership and advocacy. The final two years of the program provide in-depth study of program development and evaluation, advanced issues in community development, social movements, community participatory research, and senior thesis work. Project work is linked to applied and academic fields.

Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:

  • Compare and contrast different historical and contemporary approaches, theory, values and methods of community work.
  • Investigate psycho/social, economic and political theory underpinning community work.
  • Analyze social structures that marginalize people by race, gender, class, sexual orientation and ability.
  • Analyze community strengths, assets, complexities and resources from an empowerment perspective.
  • Analyze root causes of community problems and select appropriate intervention strategies for change.
  • Evaluate gaps in services and resources within communities applying participatory research methods that involve community members.
  • Compose, present and evaluate action plans with measurable outcomes tied to empowerment evaluation methodology.
  • Critique legislation and social policies and create alternative viewpoints that support communities in positive ways.
  • Advocate on behalf of communities arguing for change that focuses on identified community needs.
  • Devise organizational structures that support and enable community action plans to be implemented successfully.
  • Formulate, implement and evaluate plans to access sustainable resources and concrete benefits for communities.
  • Critique community development literature and cases to determine best practices in the field.
  • Network with community members and organizations to mobilize citizens and develop allies for the change process.
  • Facilitate communities through training, education and social learning to build capacity, create leaders and engage human resources.
  • Apply interpersonal and group skills to plan and facilitate discussions that build collaborative relationships and community partnerships.
  • Acknowledge the limits of knowledge in the field of community development through academic writing and professional practices in working with others from diverse disciplines to provide holistic services to communities.

Work Placement
Students will engage in field placements (which are typically unpaid). They will complete 420 hours of field placement across two semesters or 420 hours in one summer semester with one of Humber's community partners. Students will be supported by a field placement co-ordinator.

The field placement may be in a social service, community, educational or non-profit organization where students will have an opportunity to work in the community development field. During this experience, students may have a variety of responsibilities including assessment, research-based work, working directly with community groups and individuals, as well as supporting community workers, educators and/or social science professionals.

Students have the option to gain cross-cultural knowledge and experience by completing this field placement abroad. Students can put theory into practice and directly engage with communities across the globe that will benefit from community development work.

Humber’s Public Relations graduate certificate program is recognized by industry as one of Canada’s leading training grounds for public relations professionals. This intensive program is focused on preparing you to launch your degree and getting you ready for your first day of your work placement. You will learn how to plan, develop and execute effective public relations strategies. You will build critical skills in event planning, public speaking and presentation.

Experienced professors will help you develop writing skills, public relations strategies, research and planning abilities, and a high degree of social and traditional media literacy. Practical public relations courses in PR theory, marketing communications, public affairs, media relations, corporate social responsibility, sustainability and change management will provide you with a valuable and useful introduction to the field. Your teamwork, collaborative, and leadership skills will be honed through group assignments.

Work Placement
Many students choose our program because of our outstanding work placement program. After successfully completing two academic semesters, students will complete a mandatory work placement. This experience will allow you to gain valuable job skills and industry knowledge while building your network. Historically, students find work placements in PR agencies, corporations, entertainment organizations, and not-for-profits including arts organizations, hospitals, associations and government. While many placements are located within the GTA, students may also find placements outside the city, province or country.
