Humber’s Esthetician/Spa Management diploma program gives you the business management and hands-on skills you need for a career in the $119 billion Spa Economy (Global Wellness Institute, 2018). On the business side, learn the fundamentals of business writing, marketing, retail operation and day-to-day spa management. Hands-on courses focus on traditional services such as nail care technologies, advanced facial techniques, waxing, body treatments and makeup applications. As well, you will learn advanced medical esthetic services such as OxyGeneo, microdermabrasion, chemical peels, laser and Intense Pulse Light (IPL).

At Humber, you will practise what you are learning and improve your skills at The Humber Spa, a simulated work environment and retail boutique open to the community. You will provide a series of treatments including facials, hand and foot care, and body treatments to clientele.

Humber’s Funeral Director Class 1 (Embalming) diploma program draws students from around the world, preparing them to make a difference in the lives of people who are grieving the loss of a loved one. This is the only English-speaking Funeral Service Education program in Ontario.

Courses are designed with industry input, ensuring that what you’re learning is current and relevant. You will learn all aspects of funeral home operation, as well as the practical and theoretical sides of funeral service. Embalming lab courses will prepare you for the technical side of the program, while courses in issues of grief and bereavement prepare you for the emotional side. Courses in arranging, ethics and embalming will enable you to explain all options to families. Business courses will help you understand the challenges of operating a business.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:

  • Provide an accurate explanation of the rationale behind his/her actions, grounded in a comprehensive understanding of the relevant policies, practices and financial implications that guide the performance of the scope of practice of the Funeral Director – Class 1 (embalming) role.

Work Placement
The Bereavement Authority of Ontario, the provincial regulator, has approved that students of the program shall complete a one-year work placement before they can be licensed.
To progress into Semester 3, students must start a full-time (paid) work placement in a funeral home after they have successfully completed exams in Semester 2. During Semesters 3 through 5, students complete their learning by distance, and many of their assignments are based on the practical experience they are gaining in the funeral home. Humber assists students to find their placements by working with our industry partners to identify openings. Students are responsible for finding their own work placement with a licensed Ontario funeral establishment.

Humber’s Computer Programming and Analysis advanced diploma program is designed to prepare you for a wide variety of employment opportunities within the dynamic and ever-growing field of computer programming, software and web development and analysis.  

In addition to learning programming skills in a variety of languages, from Java and ASP.NET to PHP, Python and mobile programming (Android and iOS), the courses are designed to give students a solid foundation in theory and practice in web development and design, Oracle database management and administration, project management, technical writing, and all facets of information systems. Optional Co-op
This program offers a co-op option. Co-op work terms enable you to apply your skills and knowledge in a work environment and gain valuable, practical experience related to your program of study. You will learn new skills, learn about the world of work and meet people in your profession. 

For students who are accepted into the program, three co-op work terms will take place. The first four-month work term is between Semesters 3 and 4, and then two consecutive four-month work terms between Semesters 4 and 5.? There are limited spaces in the co-op option. Humber’s Construction Engineering Technology program is one of three stackable programs within the Carpentry-Construction group. Along with the Carpentry and Renovation Techniques certificate and the Building Construction Technician diploma, the program introduces you to the carpentry trade, gives you practical experience with trade regulations and with best practices. Students will be able to move from various certificate and diploma programs into the advanced diploma program (including Carpentry and Renovation Technician, Industrial Woodworking Technician, Carpentry and Renovation Techniques, and Building Construction Technician).

The advanced diploma program is designed to explore the construction industry from an engineering and management perspective. You will become familiar with the strategies required for project planning and execution for the commercial-based industry.

Throughout the program, you will learn about compliance with workplace health and safety practices and procedures in accordance with legislation and regulations. You will also learn how to ensure that work is performed in compliance with contractual obligations, applicable laws, standards, bylaws, codes and ethical practices. The first four-month work term is between Semesters 2 and 3, and the second four-month work term is between Semesters 4 and 5. There are limited spaces in the co-op option. Therefore, you will apply for the co-op option during Semester 1 and be informed of the process by which to apply. While co-op work opportunities are not guaranteed, as students are in a competitive job placement market, participating students will receive a wide range of services to help them find a co-op opportunity.

The Canadian Retirement Home (also known as Retirement Communities) industry is made up of multiple private residences within a single dwelling where residents live independently but interact frequently for recreation, meals and common interests. It is important to note that retirement homes are not long-term care or nursing homes where support is provided on a daily basis and residents may be housed in multi-resident spaces. The Canadian Retirement Home industry is expected to double in the next five years as Canada experiences a surge in aging baby boomers. This rapid expansion is creating an industry-wide need for qualified staff and retirement home managers. 

Students in the Retirement Home Management Graduate Certificate program will be trained to fill this need by developing foundational skills in the areas of leadership, administration, hospitality, financial management, sales and marketing, health, wellness and recreation, food and nutrition, and human resources management. This program was developed with industry professionals from companies (Verve Senior Living, Chartwell Retirement Residences, Revera Retirement Living and others) of various sizes and scopes within the Retirement Home Management industry. 

The program is ideal for students interested in this rapidly growing area, as well as those already working in the senior living industry who want to increase their level of responsibility or progress in their career. The program is also suited to those interested in related industries such as recreation, hospitality, food and beverage, nutrition, and sales. 

Work Placement
This program will provide students with the hands-on practical exposure to the retirement home industry and the opportunity to specialize in their chosen area. It consists of a 200 hour placement in an approved retirement community of the student's choice. Students will have an opportunity to observe and learn from experienced professionals in a real-life work setting, while integrating their classroom learning in order to gain required hands on experience.  Students have the support of a faculty internship co-ordinator and are able to apply to a variety of retirement communities run by our industry partners. They also have the opportunity to seek an employer for an approved internship. This work placement will take place after the second semester.

Humber’s Hospitality - Event Management diploma program offers you the knowledge, practical experience, industry exposure and professional certification necessary to embark on an exciting and successful career as an event planning professional.

Our program provides comprehensive learning and training opportunities aimed at assisting students prepare for and transition to valued positions in the event industry including:

  • On-site event management experience
  • Guest lectures from industry professionals
  • Field trips to local events and elite GTA event venues
  • Networking at industry conferences
  • Case studies to broaden knowledge of planning events locally, nationally and internationally

In the first semester of the program, you get immediate experience on campus working at a high profile event. And for the next two years, you will be thoroughly immersed in the world of special events via networking, volunteering and event execution opportunities. Students will be working in The Humber Room restaurant live lab for a full semester. Essential skills will be taught to prepare students for many different types of events.

Work Placement
Work experience is integral to developing a diverse and successful career in the event management profession. In this program, you will participate in a comprehensive seven-week work placement experience (280 hours) in your final semester before graduation. While on work placement, you will apply the knowledge and skills you have learned in the classroom to real event work in the field, network, and develop professional connections and relationships you will carry with you throughout your career.
