Humber’s Early Childhood Education (ECE) diploma prepares you to work with children (birth to 12 years) and their families. Students can expect to attain and exceed the practice-ready knowledge, skills and attitudes employers are seeking from ECE graduates in supporting children, families and the community by engaging in innovative learning and simulation experiences. These experiences take place within Humber's Carol Reid Early Childhood Education Lab, as well as within the Humber Child Development Centre - interacting with our scenic arboretum and nature-inspired playground and exploring responsive inclusive teaching methods and leading edge curriculum.

Work Placement

• We believe it is necessary for our students to have extensive experience in the profession in order to be successful as registered early childhood educators. Students can expect to have work placement experiences within the program and will be required to complete approximately 450-600 work placement hours over three semesters. During these three semesters, students may have field practicums such as working with families and children (various age groups) in licensed child care or preschool settings, EarlyON Child and Family Centres, various community programs, full day kindergarten, or home based child care programs. A different placement for Semesters 2, 3, and 4 ensures a range of experiences prior to graduation and equips students with a range of networks within the community to explore employment in the future.

Humber’s Computer Programmer diploma program is designed to prepare students for a wide variety of employment opportunities within the dynamic and ever-growing field of programming. In addition to learning programming in a variety of languages, from ASP.NET to XML, you will gain an in-depth understanding of industry-standard operating systems and how to use them. You will learn everything from C programming and shell scripts, to back end web design and Java. Upon graduation, you will be equipped with the up-to-date skills you need for success.

Our programming courses are designed to give you a thorough grounding in theory and practice including web development and design, distributed computing, database management and administration, project management, technical writing, information technology, and all facets of information systems. You will also learn about software development applications and follow the standards of planning, developing, testing and supporting software.

Canada has approximately 675,000 people working in information and communications technology (ICT), and about half of that workforce is in Ontario where the ICT industry accounts for over $30 billion in sales. Help satisfy the continuing demand for skilled IT professionals. Our graduates are able to work as computer programmers, junior web developers, junior database designers, junior software testers, customer support analysts, system co-ordinators, technical sales co-ordinators or technical support representatives.

Industrial designers design products for consumers.  Examples include sports footwear, headphones, wearables and automobiles. Graduates of the program are in high demand for the practical skills gained through the program’s hands-on learning environment. These skills include sketching, digital graphic rendering, model-making and computer-aided design (CAD).  The program is project driven, and many of the design projects will involve industry collaboration to ensure real-world relevance.

Students elect a design specialization in Year 3 in one of:

• Automotive design
• Product design or
• Interaction design

Automotive designers design the appearance (styling) of motor vehicles including automobiles, motorcycles and off-road vehicles. Humber is the only industrial design program in Canada that offers an automotive design specialization. 
In product design, there is more emphasis on the method of finding a solution to a user’s problem in order to make doing a task easier or make the user experience with the product more satisfying.
Interaction design is a new offering in the program which recognizes that more and more physical products are integrating a digital component, including touch screens or voice activation.

Learning Outcomes

• Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:
  • Meet the professional criteria as established by the ACIDO Charter (The Association of Chartered Industrial Designers of Ontario), demonstrating core competencies in skills, knowledge and design methodology in industrial design meeting.
  • Design, document and communicate high quality interior design propositions of varying size, scope and complexity employing principles of evidence-based design methodology.
  • Explain how products work; how products can be made to work better for people; what makes a product useful, usable, and desirable; and how products are manufactured and serviced.
  • Select and employ appropriate visual languages to investigate, analyze, interpret, develop and articulate ideas for two and three-dimensional projects.
  • Produce sophisticated design proposals emphasizing three-dimensional quality of space achieved through architectural detailing.
  • Communicate concepts and requirements to other designers and colleagues who work with them, and to clients and employers. This need to communicate draws upon: verbal and written forms, two-dimensional and three-dimensional media, and levels of detailing ranging from sketching to engineering drawings.
  • Employ computer-aided drafting (CAD), computer-aided industrial design (CAID), and appropriate 2D and 3D graphic software to create graphic presentations and marketing materials.
  • Integrate sustainable practices in the design process and demonstrate leadership by educating users in these principles.
  • Analyze the complexity of forces – economic, political, physiological, sociological and technological – which influence the design of the physical environment.
  • Incorporate principles of user-centered design, human factors and ergonomics in design solutions.

Work Placement

• This program includes a work placement of 420 hours in the summer between Year three and four.

Humber’s Culinary Management diploma program teaches you the skills you need to excel as a chef in the culinary industry. Work in the world’s finest dining establishments, and take advantage of international study opportunities. Kick your career up a notch by competing in on-campus, national and international skill competitions.

This program will also prepare you to to design, organize, implement, serve and execute your own dinner event in the “Chef's Table” course. Using a market-related themed menu, mise en place and à la carte cooking, students will showcase classical and contemporary techniques and skill. The Charcuterie and Advanced Garde Manger courses involve students using contemporary level food presentation, styling techniques and becoming proficient with various butchery processes on a wide range of meats. The Emerging Trends course is unique among Ontario colleges, providing students with the opportunity to work alongside local guest chefs. Students also have the opportunity to experience preparing meals on the Humber Food Truck, Humber’s classroom on wheels. In addition, students work alongside some of the country’s best chefs. Students receive unmatched time spent with several leading chefs about what’s happening in today’s restaurant scene and food industry.

Note: A fast-track program is implemented for the January start. The first semester (January to April) is immediately followed by the second semester (May to August), resulting in a short summer break. The third semester begins in September, allowing students to complete the two-year program in just 16 months.

Qualified students will complete work placements in the kitchen of a leading hotel, restaurant or golf course of their choice for seven unpaid weeks in the fourth semester (40 hours per week). Students are also able to apply for placements across Canada and internationally, which has jumpstarted many successful careers.

Humber’s Design Foundation certificate program provides you with the skills to focus your creativity as you begin a career in design.  If you have a clear interest in visual art and design, but want to upgrade or build your portfolio of work, or explore various design disciplines while considering your future career, this is the program for you. With a deep scope of experience in a variety of design facets, our faculty provides you with an industry-current perspective of your work while offering you a broad based preparatory design education. You will develop design skills, techniques and processes; and learn about various professional career choices while developing and refining your comprehensive portfolio. Your training is led by professional designers from a variety of disciplines in a curriculum that features courses in:

• 1, 2 and 3-Point perspective drawing
• 2D and 3D principles
• Colour theory
• Interior design
• Industrial design
• Graphic design
• Design software such as Photoshop, Illustrator and AutoCAD

You will also work in professional-quality labs, developing skills that will give you the hands-on experience employers want.

Designers influence the development of products, the packages they come in and the marketing materials used to promote them. We also rely on designers to plan all types of buildings and to create inviting spaces within them.In Toronto’s vibrant creative sector, the demand for talented and skilled designers is strong. Your generalized training in the many aspects of design may be an effective launching pad to more specialized design study in various fields including industrial design, interior design, interior decorating, graphic design, architecture, civil engineering or building technology.

The Advanced Chocolate and Confectionery Artistry graduate certificate program offers you an opportunity to develop high-level skills in pastry arts. Using advanced techniques and sophisticated equipment, you will design and produce artisanal chocolates and confections, international desserts, frozen preparations, and multi-tiered special occasion cakes in Humber's state-of-the-art bake labs. You will research current trends and emerging technologies in chocolate and confectionery with a focus on sustainability and environmental stewardship. Studies in entrepreneurship, and recipe and product development will culminate in the launch of a branded product.

This program is offered in a flexible learning environment allowing students to learn online, in-class or in a hybrid format. Practical classes take place in the evening to accommodate working professionals.

Humber’s Practical Nursing diploma program provides the skills and knowledge needed to become a registered practical nurse (RPN). You will develop, practise and refine your skills in our state-of-the-art clinical simulation, computer and bioscience labs with direct clinical practice and simulated laboratory experiences. Humber is a leading-edge facility in every respect. This program has been awarded the highest rating for accreditation - a testament to its excellence. Practice and learn in our bioscience and health science laboratories – including clinical simulation labs that provide hands-on learning in a controlled environment. Continuous placement in a range of clinical settings enhances your ability to apply in-classroom education to real-life situations.

You will participate in a total of 1,035 hours of unpaid clinical placements over the course of the program which take place over each semester and give you valuable hands-on experience. The school arranges and communicates with all placements. Throughout the first year of the program, you will participate in a unique community-service learning placement in a variety of community settings. In Semester 2, you will work in a long-term care setting, while Semester 3 takes place in rehabilitation, complex or acute-care settings. In Semester 2 and 3, you will also participate in clinical simulation and/or Stilwell (a virtual learning community designed to represent a typical Canadian neighbourhood). In Semester 4, you will complete a preceptored (one-on-one placement alongside a registered practical nurse) pre-graduate clinical practice.

According to Human Resources and Skills Development Canada, nursing is seen as a highgrowth career option with more than 14,000 openings projected annually until at least 2020. As a graduate of our program, you will be able to work in various health-care settings including acute-care hospitals, long-term care, rehabilitation services, community services, psychiatry, homes for the aging, public health units, community nursing agencies, clinics, private practices, schools and child-care centres. Many of our graduates go on to complete postgraduate advanced-skills education used in specialty disciplines such as surgery, dialysis, cardiology and emergency.

Humber’s Post-Production graduate certificate program will develop the technological skills, creative and critical abilities you will need to thrive in the post-production industry. You will gain a firm grounding in industry-standard, non-linear video editing software. Through lectures and hands-on work, you will learn the fundamentals of the technical and aesthetic creation of digital media content and get the opportunity to specialize and target specific post-production skills to maximize your marketability in a competitive industry.

You will learn how to collaborate with other departments in the production chain, and how to develop efficient broadcast standard workflows. You will be introduced to the theory and practice of picture and sound editing/mixing, VFX and motion graphics creation, and you will learn how to make professional contacts, engage with employers and guilds, and the basic business skills you will need as a freelancer. You will study the fundamentals of branding and graphic design and produce a marketable portfolio website.

With technology as its main focus, your sound, picture, and visual effects compositing skills will enable you to create content to the industry standards required in the competitive media environment.

• Evaluate documentaries, narrative films, TV series and music videos for creative features and technical aspects.
• Prepare and integrate 2-D and 3-D graphic and animation footage using post-production applications.
• Manage the editing process using an Edit Decision List.
• Complete picture editing projects using non-linear editing suites within specified time frames and budgets.
• Complete audio editing projects using non-linear editing suites within specified time frames and budgets.
• Design and build a network system for post-production applications.
• Manage post-production teams.
• Manage post-production projects.
• Distribute interactive content produced through the Web and DVD.
• Compile a portfolio of creative work for presentations to funding agencies and post-production facilities in order to secure employment.

Work Placement

• This program includes a mandatory work placement. We work with you to find a suitable placement in your chosen field of specialization, allowing you to apply the skills you’ve learned in a professional environment. Placements will take place in post-production houses and media companies in Toronto. Work placements are typically unpaid but provide you with the opportunity to further your knowledge in your chosen field and begin to build your resumé and network of professional contacts.

Humber’s Mechanical Engineering Technician diploma program gives you a thorough knowledge of materials and mechanical solutions for designing and manufacturing mechanical parts and assemblies. You will learn in Humber’s state-of-the-art labs, offering you the practical experience you need to succeed. Courses focus on:

• Engineering drawings/calculations
• Mechanical operations
• Programming of computer numerical control (CNC) machine tools using computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) software – Mastercam
• Applying design principles and practices
• Design and manufacturing process problems
• Learning 2D computer-aided design (CAD) software – AutoCAD, 3D CAD software – SolidWorks

The curriculum includes courses in solids mechanics, mechanical design, hydraulics, pneumatics, programmable logic controllers (PLCs), manufacturing and management. You will be able to develop the manufacturing procedures to produce mechanical components.

Begin a career designing and manufacturing with our Mechanical Engineering Technician diploma. According to the Canadian Government’s Working in Canada website, the outlook for jobs in this field is positive. “Due to a concentration of employers such as power plants, large automotive manufacturers and other transportation and goods manufacturers, openings for mechanical engineers should remain steady,” says the report. “Job openings in this field should arise from the creation of new power facilities and production increases in the transportation equipment manufacturing, including aircraft.” Graduates find employment in areas related to mechanical design, production, testing, consulting and service industries, as well as in machine tool sales and service departments. Demand is growing for graduates in fields related to the sustainable economy and in consulting engineering particularly for companies engaged in infrastructure projects.

Humber’s Bachelor of Engineering program begins with a common platform of first year courses which provide foundational engineering knowledge and skills. Following the first year, the curriculum branches into three different discipline areas: Information Systems Engineering, Mechatronics, and The Built Environment.  

The Bachelor of Engineering – Mechatronics discipline gives you hands-on experience with industry-standard advanced technology. You can choose from focused study in either robotics or embedded systems. During the course of the program, students will solve real industry and community problems and gain knowledge and skills in mechanical, electrical, electronics and computer engineering. Students use emerging and cutting edge technologies in robotics, control, electronics, Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC), motors, mechanical components, digital and analog circuits, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Virtual Reality (VR), machine learning, modelling, simulation, embedded systems, and advanced manufacturing. Each of these themes provides theoretical knowledge alongside hands-on training to complement a systems-thinking approch to solving real world problems. 

In addition, this program provides an opportunity to work on industry-led projects through multidisciplinary capstone projects as well as applied research opportunities. Through these experiences, students apply the theoretical knowledge gained during their education to solve real industry problems, while improving their professional skills such as teamwork, communication, collaboration and problem-solving. 

This program is also offered at Sault College in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Students in the program will collaborate on activities using technology that will involve simultaneous learning at both colleges. 

Work Placement
A co-op work program (three consecutive work terms, 420 hour each) ensures that work-integrated learning experiences are woven into the curriculum. This provides students with a contextual understanding of the industry and specific sectors they are training for, as well as recognition of the importance of hands-on experience.
