In Humber’s Animation 3D advanced diploma program, you will develop a well-rounded knowledge base and skillset that includes strong art, animation, modelling and visualization abilities. You will be prepared for the ever-expanding 3D art field with a thorough understanding of the latest 3D digital art technologies in a program developed with the input of industry advisors. Learn to work like the pros do — using the same 3D animation software and tools to render creative thoughts into compelling images and fully-realized design.

This program will allow you to develop a blend of the most relevant digital and analog art skills, as well as an understanding of creative and technological processes. A full understanding of art and design theories will help you draw, visualize and apply colour principles to create appealing work. You will also gain a mastery in adhering to a pipeline, as you develop content across courses; and teamwork, as you collaborate with students from other programs to better simulate a studio/production environment.?

• Usability Lab
  • The Usability Lab is a new facility for students in the Faculty of Media & Creative Arts at Humber College. This “Live Lab” is a full-fledged usability lab where content creators can capture & assess the interaction between user and design.
  • This Usability Lab is specialized, in that it was purposefully built for usability studies to ensure that the environment does not interfere with the testing. Designed with flexibility at its core, it has been equipped with a broad variety of technology, supporting usability testing at many different levels of sophistication.
  • What makes this lab unique is the fact that it is mobile. This one-of-a-kind usability lab can be delivered to those who wish to use and evaluate our designs, as well as their own. For our students, they can participate in, and lead experiments that will truly test the designs they have developed, to make sure they work in the manner they have been designed to work.

Humber’s Mechanical Engineering Technology advanced diploma program prepares you for a career in the design and manufacturing of mechanical components and applications. The curriculum covers the theory and the skills required to:

• Program computer numerical control (CNC) machine tools using computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) software – Mastercam
• Apply design principles and practices
• Design and manufacture process problems
• Learn 2D computer-aided design (CAD) software - AutoCAD, 3D CAD software – SolidWorks
• Design and manufacture mechanical parts and assemblies
• Apply design principles and practices to a variety of engineering problems and environments

Our program builds upon the solid technical foundation of the Mechanical Engineering Technician program. The skills first learned in the technician program are enhanced through project-based learning and increased hands-on practice in the labs.

This program offers a co-op option. Co-op work terms enable you to apply your skills and knowledge in a work environment and gain valuable, practical experience related to your program of study. You will learn new skills, learn about the world of work and meet people in your profession. For students who are accepted into the program, three co-op work terms will take place. The first four-month work term is between Semesters 2 and 3, and then two consecutive four-month work terms between Semesters 4 and 5.  There are limited spaces in the co-op option. Therefore, you will apply for the co-op option during Semester 1 and be informed of the process by which to apply.  While co-op work opportunities are not guaranteed, as students are in a competitive job placement market, participating students will receive a wide range of services to help them find a co-op opportunity.

Begin a career designing and manufacturing with a Mechanical Engineering Technology advanced diploma. Our graduates are able to perform engineering design and equipment/technology selection for major components in the design of mechanical systems; liaise with fabrication and engineering staff, as well as with vendors, for technical information and specifications; prepare preliminary and final cost estimates; and prepare and evaluate production processes, costing, tool design and inspection requirements. Graduates work in two main areas:

• Drafting and design, equipment testing, mechanical equipment installation and consulting engineering offices
• The metal cutting industries, programming, cost estimating, quality control and inspection, and in machinery sales

Humber’s Media Communications diploma program is designed to meet industry demands within multi-faceted areas of the communications industry. Students graduate with a diverse range of marketable skills in photography, graphic design, web design and writing, social media, and videography.

In the program, you will learn how to:

• Be effective transmedia storytellers across multiple platforms
• Produce corporate video and audio for the web and other applications
• Design, write for and edit effective websites
• Shoot professional photographic images in both the studio and on location environments
• Create and edit content using current software applications such as Photoshop, InDesign, Illustrator and Premiere Pro
• Learn how to establish, operate and market your business through a course in freelance and project management
• Research, write and design communications such as media kits, blogs and brochures

Courses are designed with industry input, ensuring you are learning current and relevant information in state-of-the-art labs from industry experts – people who know the trends and effective methods of communications.

The first semester of this program is shared with the two-year Advertising and Graphic Design diploma, the three-year Journalism advanced diploma, the two-year Advertising and Marketing Communications diploma, and the three-year Public Relations advanced diploma programs, allowing the flexibility to continue in any of these five programs in second semester.

Learning Outcomes

• Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:
  • Perform the duties, tasks and activities required of a media communications specialist in business, government and the not-for-profit sectors.
  • Research and gather information in print, audio and visual formats for communications’ products and strategies.
  • Analyze clients’ communications needs and implement solutions for business, government and the not-for-profit sectors.
  • Create audio, visual and print communications according to the client’s purpose and audience.
  • Design and create content for websites, using current software applications.
  • Capture, scan, download, save, store, and manipulate digital images using current software applications.
  • Produce corporate video and audio using current software applications.
  • Create and manage content for presentations at in-house meetings and media conferences.
  • Adhere to ethical and legal guidelines in communications practice.
  • Maintain professional relationships with business associates and clients.
  • Develop a portfolio of communications’ products and strategies for a variety of projects and audiences.

Work Placement
Students will participate in a mandatory work placement which takes place in the last semester of study. During that time, students hone their skills in professional environments, developing digital communication solutions. They build complete portfolios which, when they graduate, have them standing out from their competitors as corporate communications professionals.

The Canadian Retirement Home (also known as Retirement Communities) industry is made up of multiple private residences within a single dwelling where residents live independently but interact frequently for recreation, meals and common interests. It is important to note that retirement homes are not long-term care or nursing homes where support is provided on a daily basis and residents may be housed in multi-resident spaces. The Canadian Retirement Home industry is expected to double in the next five years as Canada experiences a surge in aging baby boomers. This rapid expansion is creating an industry-wide need for qualified staff and retirement home managers. 

Students in the Retirement Home Management Graduate Certificate program will be trained to fill this need by developing foundational skills in the areas of leadership, administration, hospitality, financial management, sales and marketing, health, wellness and recreation, food and nutrition, and human resources management. This program was developed with industry professionals from companies (Verve Senior Living, Chartwell Retirement Residences, Revera Retirement Living and others) of various sizes and scopes within the Retirement Home Management industry. 

The program is ideal for students interested in this rapidly growing area, as well as those already working in the senior living industry who want to increase their level of responsibility or progress in their career. The program is also suited to those interested in related industries such as recreation, hospitality, food and beverage, nutrition, and sales. 

Work Placement
This program will provide students with the hands-on practical exposure to the retirement home industry and the opportunity to specialize in their chosen area. It consists of a 200 hour placement in an approved retirement community of the student's choice. Students will have an opportunity to observe and learn from experienced professionals in a real-life work setting, while integrating their classroom learning in order to gain required hands on experience.  Students have the support of a faculty internship co-ordinator and are able to apply to a variety of retirement communities run by our industry partners. They also have the opportunity to seek an employer for an approved internship. This work placement will take place after the second semester. 

Humber’s Computer Programmer diploma program is designed to prepare students for a wide variety of employment opportunities within the dynamic and ever-growing field of programming. In addition to learning programming in a variety of languages, from ASP.NET to XML, you will gain an in-depth understanding of industry-standard operating systems and how to use them. You will learn everything from C programming and shell scripts, to back end web design and Java. Upon graduation, you will be equipped with the up-to-date skills you need for success.

Our programming courses are designed to give you a thorough grounding in theory and practice including web development and design, distributed computing, database management and administration, project management, technical writing, information technology, and all facets of information systems. You will also learn about software development applications and follow the standards of planning, developing, testing and supporting software.

Canada has approximately 675,000 people working in information and communications technology (ICT), and about half of that workforce is in Ontario where the ICT industry accounts for over $30 billion in sales. Help satisfy the continuing demand for skilled IT professionals. Our graduates are able to work as computer programmers, junior web developers, junior database designers, junior software testers, customer support analysts, system co-ordinators, technical sales co-ordinators or technical support representatives.

Humber’s Carpentry and Renovation Techniques certificate is one of three stackable programs within the Carpentry-Construction group. Along with the Building Construction Technician diploma and the Construction Engineering Technology advanced diploma, the program introduces students to the carpentry trade, gives practical experience with trade regulations and with best practices. Students will be able to move from this certificate program into the diploma and advanced diploma programs. Additionally, Humber’s Carpentry and Renovation Technician diploma and Industrial Woodworking Technician diploma offer additional pathways.

The Carpentry and Renovation certificate program is designed to introduce you to both the practical experience necessary for trade regulations and the academic requirements of carpentry trade certification. You will gain a solid understanding of the fundamental technical elements of the carpentry trade.

You will learn health and safety practices and perform building construction and renovation tasks in compliance with contracts, building code, laws and ethical practices. These practices will be taught in light of established sustainability practices. You will learn to safely operate tools and assist in the preparation of estimations. Essential learnings also include time management, team work and problem solving.

Humber’s Electrical Techniques certificate program is designed to introduce you to the fundamental elements of the trade. We aim to facilitate your employment by giving you practical experience with trade regulations and practices. Throughout your program, you will get a solid understanding of the various technical elements of the electrical trade. There will be a significant practical component to the program. Our graduates find a range of employment opportunities with electrical apprenticeship programs, power generation, green energy and automation.

Humber’s Welding Techniques certificate program is designed to help introduce prospective welders to the trade. The program aims to facilitate employment and entry into the apprenticeship program by giving you practical experience with trade regulations and practices. You will gain a solid understanding of the various technical theory and elements of the welding trade. You will be exposed to topics including health and safety, blueprint reading and sketching, applied math, communication, shielded metal arc welding, gas metal arc welding, introduction to computers, and all position structural welding. You will learn valuable skills by using the latest industry software programs and working in fully equipped up-to-date labs and shops. At Humber, skilled instructors highlight current trends within the industry and strive to duplicate situations that apprentices and skilled tradespeople will see in their everyday working life.

Humber’s Plumbing Techniques certificate program is a comprehensive introduction to the trade. You will learn the basics of plumbing including theory, code and blueprints, as well as gain significant hands-on experience. Upon completion of this program, you will have the skills necessary to pursue a career in the plumbing trade.

Water, waste and sewage systems – hallmarks of urban living – require high-level skills to design, install and maintain. In the Plumbing Techniques certificate program, you’ll be introduced to the skills necessary to begin your career as a plumber. Graduates of this program may find a range of career opportunities including apprenticeship, construction industry work, green energy initiatives, and municipal water and sewage treatment. According to BuildForce Canada, an estimated 248,000 construction workers are expected to retire over the next decade. This demographic trend represents as significant loss of skilled workers that will require new workers to replace them. Given this potential shortage, as well as the boom in construction across the country, individuals with plumbing skills are projected to have an advantage in the job market.

Humber’s Construction Engineering Technology program is one of three stackable programs within the Carpentry-Construction group. Along with the Carpentry and Renovation Techniques certificate and the Building Construction Technician diploma, the program introduces you to the carpentry trade, gives you practical experience with trade regulations and with best practices. Students will be able to move from various certificate and diploma programs into the advanced diploma program (including Carpentry and Renovation Technician, Industrial Woodworking Technician, Carpentry and Renovation Techniques, and Building Construction Technician).

The advanced diploma program is designed to explore the construction industry from an engineering and management perspective. You will become familiar with the strategies required for project planning and execution for the commercial-based industry.

Throughout the program, you will learn about compliance with workplace health and safety practices and procedures in accordance with legislation and regulations. You will also learn how to ensure that work is performed in compliance with contractual obligations, applicable laws, standards, bylaws, codes and ethical practices. Coursework will include sustainability practices. Teamwork, leadership, and supervisory and interpersonal skills will be emphasized.

Key learnings will include:

• Collecting, processing, analyzing and co-ordinating technical data to produce project-related documents
• Co-ordinating and facilitating the collecting, processing, interpreting and application of survey/geomatics and layout information
• Selecting and using industry-specific technologies
• Monitoring projects through principles of construction project management
• Preparing estimates
• Performing, co-ordinating and facilitating quality control testing

Optional Co-op
