Humber’s Plumbing Techniques certificate program is a comprehensive introduction to the trade. You will learn the basics of plumbing including theory, code and blueprints, as well as gain significant hands-on experience. Upon completion of this program, you will have the skills necessary to pursue a career in the plumbing trade.

Water, waste and sewage systems – hallmarks of urban living – require high-level skills to design, install and maintain. In the Plumbing Techniques certificate program, you’ll be introduced to the skills necessary to begin your career as a plumber. Graduates of this program may find a range of career opportunities including apprenticeship, construction industry work, green energy initiatives, and municipal water and sewage treatment. According to BuildForce Canada, an estimated 248,000 construction workers are expected to retire over the next decade. This demographic trend represents as significant loss of skilled workers that will require new workers to replace them. Given this potential shortage, as well as the boom in construction across the country, individuals with plumbing skills are projected to have an advantage in the job market.

Humber’s Enterprise Software Development graduate certificate program provides advanced concepts, skills and knowledge for those currently employed in the information technology and related fields, or graduates of information technology or computer studies programs.

Students will have the opportunity to select their pathway through elective courses ranging from software development, web and mobile application development to big data, business intelligence and database administration. Students will then apply these concepts in variety of hands-on activities and enterprise projects.

In the final semester of the program, students become involved in an industry project supervised by one of the Humber industrial partners, helping students apply and enhance their IT, teamwork, interpersonal and project management skills.

Moreover, through a range of Capstone showcasing events and employer engagement workshops, students will have a chance to showcase their portfolios and capstone project to employers and practise how to reach prospective employers in today's competitive job market.

Humber’s Broadcast Television/Videography (BRTV) diploma program will quickly prepare you for media content creation in operational and production roles. An intensive, behind-the-scenes look at broadcasting will give you a solid grounding in video production skills and broadcast standards. This program is an excellent starting point for anyone who wants to work behind the scenes in television production and features a wide variety of courses, as well as field experience opportunities, empowering graduates for success in the broadcast industry.

You will learn about:

• writing, planning and producing content

Your hands-on broadcasting education will be enriched by access to Humber’s high-definition television mobile truck—the most advanced of its kind among Ontario colleges. This compact, 35-foot television facility features state-of-the-art broadcast equipment including the latest cameras, video production switcher, digital recording system, broadcast graphics software and editing facilities.

Humber has a strong reputation in the television broadcasting industry.BRTV students regularly produce and live stream Humber Hawks varsity games and esport tournaments. BRTV students have also worked with Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment (MLSE) on National Lacrosse League games and with Double Black Diamond Productions on internationally broadcast FIS World Cup events.

Note: the January 2020 program start will offer a hybrid curriculum for Semesters 1 and 2. A hybrid curriculum is a blend of face-to-face and online. Semester 2 will be offered from May to August. Semesters 3 and 4 (September to April) will be comprised of face-to-face class time.

Humber’s User Experience (UX) Design graduate certificate simulates the interdisciplinary approaches needed to achieve an innovation process with a focus on design desirability, technological feasibility and business viability. In two semesters, you will be prepared to innovate by problem finding through design research, problem understanding through synthesis, and problem solving through design and prototyping experiences. You will learn how to create valuable courses of action by generating design problem hypotheses, structured design process plans, compelling UX deliverables and persuasive arguments.

You will learn human-centered design methods and rhetoric that ground your design in the needs of the public. In addition, you will learn how to use interaction design and design systems through industry-standard quality assurance methods, and how to design and implement user interfaces to follow corporate strategies. A variety of conceptual and practical work will help you develop effective UX design skills.

As a user experience designer, you will employ the work-practice of prototyping concepts in order to describe ways to integrate digital services with material products and environments. As a UX researcher, you will discover insights through usability testing and apply them to create value for corporate clients and their customers. Toward the conclusion of this program, you will convert your acquired skills and achievements into a portfolio of design products that will help you launch a career as a UX design professional. This program fosters the practical discipline, relevance and currency essential in the contemporary, ever-growing UX job market.

The Systems Navigator graduate certificate program will prepare you to work in an emerging profession helping individuals manage and co-ordinate their care within the health and social services fields. Systems navigators assist with navigating complicated and interrelated systems and are the primary source of communication between the inter-disciplinary team and individuals, acting as an advocate and guide.

You will acquire skills to assess diverse clients’ service priorities and to develop personalized care plans. Building on your current professional knowledge and practice, you will learn about the complex systems in which support services are provided to patients and clients. In addition, you will learn the business and economics of service delivery systems and how professionals’ roles and responsibilities intersect.

This program will prepare you for an exciting career in the emerging field of systems navigation. Graduates will be prepared to work across various health and community service systems and will also have the skills to take on client leadership roles specific to seamless service delivery for patients and clients, often acting as the single point of contact. Career opportunities exist in the fields of nursing, occupational/physical therapy, social services, mental health and addictions, and child and youth care. 

Humber’s Biotechnology diploma program prepares graduates with the transferable skills needed to build successful careers in a variety of biotechnology and research sectors. The program balances theoretical understanding with experiential practices in specific laboratory skills needed by employers. These practical components are the focus of the program and are developed and reinforced through an integration of practical laboratory experiences. Integrative laboratory projects are designed to simulate a real life experience through translation of theory to practice. Humber’s Design Foundation certificate program provides you with the skills to focus your creativity as you begin a career in design.  If you have a clear interest in visual art and design, but want to upgrade or build your portfolio of work, or explore various design disciplines while considering your future career, this is the program for you. With a deep scope of experience in a variety of design facets, our faculty provides you with an industry-current perspective of your work while offering you a broad based preparatory design education. You will develop design skills, techniques and processes; and learn about various professional career choices while developing and refining your comprehensive portfolio. Your training is led by professional designers from a variety of disciplines in a curriculum that features courses in:

We also rely on designers to plan all types of buildings and to create inviting spaces within them.In Toronto’s vibrant creative sector, the demand for talented and skilled designers is strong. Your generalized training in the many aspects of design may be an effective launching pad to more specialized design study in various fields including industrial design, interior design, interior decorating, graphic design, architecture, civil engineering or building technology.

Humber’s Millwright Techniques certificate program is designed to help introduce prospective millwrights to the trade. The program aims to facilitate employment or provide the required components to enter into a millwright apprenticeship program, giving practical experience with trade regulations and practices. You will gain a solid understanding of the various technical theory and elements of the millwright trade. There will be a significant practical component to the program, and you will learn valuable skills by using the latest industry software programs and working in fully equipped up-to-date labs and shops. At Humber, skilled instructors highlight current trends within the industry and strive to duplicate situations that apprentices and skilled tradespeople will see in their everyday working life.
Canada currently faces a critical shortage of skilled workers. Skilled tradespeople will be increasingly in demand because of the rapid pace of technological changes and as current workers in the field begin to retire. According to the Working in Canada Report (Government of Canada), employment opportunities for licensed millwrights will be steady. Graduates of this program will find a range of employment opportunities through millwright apprenticeship programs, as well as positions associated with construction and industry work, metal fabrication, and green energy. There are many opportunities for advancement within this career path from supervisory to management positions.

Humber’s Computer Programmer diploma program is designed to prepare students for a wide variety of employment opportunities within the dynamic and ever-growing field of programming. In addition to learning programming in a variety of languages, from ASP.NET to XML, you will gain an in-depth understanding of industry-standard operating systems and how to use them. You will learn everything from C programming and shell scripts, to back end web design and Java. Upon graduation, you will be equipped with the up-to-date skills you need for success.

Our programming courses are designed to give you a thorough grounding in theory and practice including web development and design, distributed computing, database management and administration, project management, technical writing, information technology, and all facets of information systems. You will also learn about software development applications and follow the standards of planning, developing, testing and supporting software.

Canada has approximately 675,000 people working in information and communications technology (ICT), and about half of that workforce is in Ontario where the ICT industry accounts for over $30 billion in sales. Help satisfy the continuing demand for skilled IT professionals. Our graduates are able to work as computer programmers, junior web developers, junior database designers, junior software testers, customer support analysts, system co-ordinators, technical sales co-ordinators or technical support representatives.

Humber’s Funeral Director Class 1 (Embalming) diploma program draws students from around the world, preparing them to make a difference in the lives of people who are grieving the loss of a loved one. This is the only English-speaking Funeral Service Education program in Ontario.

Courses are designed with industry input, ensuring that what you’re learning is current and relevant. You will learn all aspects of funeral home operation, as well as the practical and theoretical sides of funeral service. Embalming lab courses will prepare you for the technical side of the program, while courses in issues of grief and bereavement prepare you for the emotional side. Courses in arranging, ethics and embalming will enable you to explain all options to families. Business courses will help you understand the challenges of operating a business.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:

• Provide an accurate explanation of the rationale behind his/her actions, grounded in a comprehensive understanding of the relevant policies, practices and financial implications that guide the performance of the scope of practice of the Funeral Director – Class 1 (embalming) role.
• Communicate clearly, sensitively and respectfully with potential purchasers all relevant information related to various options and possible implications of decisions made at the time of purchase, as permitted by legislation in the scope of practice for the specified licence classification including:
  • Explaining funeral service and disposition options including arterial embalming and restoration
  • Explaining clearly and accurately prearranging and prefunding services, product knowledge and merchandise and financial implications
  • Managing effectively and sensitively all applicable contractual negotiations and obligations, financing options, and requirements for service and product delivery referring to other licensed professionals when outside the legislative scope of practice
• Communicate and apply an accurate and comprehensive understanding of prearranging and prepayment including investment vehicles, insurance, trust reconciliation and financing of prepaid contracts within legislative scope of practice.
• Conduct oneself in a manner consistent with principles and accepted practices of the funeral sector, using professional language.
• Complete all aspects of business operations for a funeral establishment that provides embalming on site or transfer service, in the capacity of an owner/manager consistent with legislated responsibilities in a legal, ethical, safe and efficient manner across a broad range of predictable and unpredictable contexts.
• Arrange (prearrange) and document funeral services, disposition details, related transactions and follow up services with the legal representative in an effective, professional, caring and creative manner.
• Engage in, and plan for, ongoing personal and professional development, networking/community relations and inter- professional collaboration.
• Provide effective leadership and contribute to the supervision and mentoring of all team members, including licensees, support staff, and/or interns in a professional, caring and creative manner through providing appropriate direction as it relates to the delivery of funeral service.
• Lead, establish, maintain and participate effectively in funeral establishment work teams consisting of licensees, support staff and/or interns demonstrating at all times the ability to learn, grow and work together.
• Care for and handle the deceased respectfully and safely at all times.
• Complete and perform effectively and efficiently all non-embalming preparation processes and arterial embalming and restoration processes.
• Direct funeral services and visitation in a respectful and sensitive manner consistent with the direction of the legal representative.
• Complete prepaid contract related documents and related financial matters in accordance with applicable legislation.
• Coordinate and deliver the selected disposition services and follow up services, effectively, professionally and consistent with, and supportive of, the wishes of the legal representative.
• Make decisions ethically and professionally based on a comprehensive understanding of the knowledge and skills required of an owner/manager of the applicable business licence class pursuant to the Funeral, Burial and Cremation Services Act, 2002 (FBCSA).

Work Placement
The Bereavement Authority of Ontario, the provincial regulator, has approved that students of the program shall complete a one-year work placement before they can be licensed.
To progress into Semester 3, students must start a full-time (paid) work placement in a funeral home after they have successfully completed exams in Semester 2. During Semesters 3 through 5, students complete their learning by distance, and many of their assignments are based on the practical experience they are gaining in the funeral home. Humber assists students to find their placements by working with our industry partners to identify openings. Students are responsible for finding their own work placement with a licensed Ontario funeral establishment.
