Humber’s Mechanical Engineering Technology advanced diploma program prepares you for a career in the design and manufacturing of mechanical components and applications. The curriculum covers the theory and the skills required to:

• Program computer numerical control (CNC) machine tools using computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) software – Mastercam
• Apply design principles and practices
• Design and manufacture process problems
• Learn 2D computer-aided design (CAD) software - AutoCAD, 3D CAD software – SolidWorks
• Design and manufacture mechanical parts and assemblies
• Apply design principles and practices to a variety of engineering problems and environments

Our program builds upon the solid technical foundation of the Mechanical Engineering Technician program. The skills first learned in the technician program are enhanced through project-based learning and increased hands-on practice in the labs.

This program offers a co-op option. Co-op work terms enable you to apply your skills and knowledge in a work environment and gain valuable, practical experience related to your program of study. You will learn new skills, learn about the world of work and meet people in your profession. For students who are accepted into the program, three co-op work terms will take place. The first four-month work term is between Semesters 2 and 3, and then two consecutive four-month work terms between Semesters 4 and 5.  There are limited spaces in the co-op option. Therefore, you will apply for the co-op option during Semester 1 and be informed of the process by which to apply.  While co-op work opportunities are not guaranteed, as students are in a competitive job placement market, participating students will receive a wide range of services to help them find a co-op opportunity.

Begin a career designing and manufacturing with a Mechanical Engineering Technology advanced diploma. Our graduates are able to perform engineering design and equipment/technology selection for major components in the design of mechanical systems; liaise with fabrication and engineering staff, as well as with vendors, for technical information and specifications; prepare preliminary and final cost estimates; and prepare and evaluate production processes, costing, tool design and inspection requirements. Graduates work in two main areas:

• Drafting and design, equipment testing, mechanical equipment installation and consulting engineering offices
• The metal cutting industries, programming, cost estimating, quality control and inspection, and in machinery sales

You will learn to critically analyze problems and apply best practices to plan, design and build websites/applications. You will build sites and apps from the ground up using the most up-to-date techniques and fundamental technologies. You will also learn to tackle technical challenges by developing strong troubleshooting and problem solving skills. The solutions you create along your journey will be curated into a captivating portfolio website at the end of the program.

Our unique project-based approach leads students in the program through the entire process of creating websites and web applications. Observational field trips provide opportunities for you to connect classroom theory, such as the perception of space and human interaction, with built environments. In the fourth-year, you will interact with industry mentors to research, develop and document a large scale project from initial concept to construction documentation.
Additionally, a self-directed volunteer project helps connect your passion for design to the community and the design industry. Students have worked with organizations such as the Furniture Bank, Toronto District School Board, youth and women’s shelters, and Habitat for Humanity.

Work Placement
You will apply your hands-on, job-ready skills with a 420-hour paid work placement. Career management workshops help you to develop effective job search skills. You will find your own work placement with the support of work placement consultants and faculty. 

The graduates from the Wireless Telecommunications graduate certificate program are 5G ready. The 5G communications platform will support future innovations in the area of the Internet of Things, augumented reality, industrial automation and automated vehicles including drones. Our graduates build and maintain the infrastructure of communication systems. They learn what it takes to be successful in the communications industry. The wireless program focuses on three main outcomes: RF and Optical test and measurement, IP addressing and networking, and troubleshooting of a number of wireless protocols and systems. 

Our graduates understand the engineering tools and equipment for the testing of systems including drive test tools, RF and Optical test equipment, protocol analyzers, and virtualization and virtualized tools. Students will have access to learn on some of the best and latest equipment available. The curriculum is kept current with the collaboration of our industry partners in the wireless field. Students utilize the latest technologies and small classes taught by experienced faculty and industry leaders.

The Canadian wireless industry supports over 280,000 jobs with sector salary above the Canadian average. In addition, the international wireless telecommunications market is growing. There are numerous employment opportunities in the planning, developing, manufacturing, co-ordinating, implementing, maintaining and managing of telecommunications systems for businesses and government. As the rate of technology adoption increases in Canadian industry, the Wireless Telecommunications graduate certificate program is preparing graduates for these new markets. A 2015 - 2019 labour market report by the Information and Communications Technology Council (ICTC) indicates that by 2019, over 182,000 critical ICT positions will be left unfilled.

Graduates of the program work at cell phone service providers, equipment manufacturers, in-house information technology (IT) departments, sales departments, and specialized telecommunication and networking companies.

The Systems Navigator graduate certificate program will prepare you to work in an emerging profession helping individuals manage and co-ordinate their care within the health and social services fields. Systems navigators assist with navigating complicated and interrelated systems and are the primary source of communication between the inter-disciplinary team and individuals, acting as an advocate and guide.

You will acquire skills to assess diverse clients’ service priorities and to develop personalized care plans. Building on your current professional knowledge and practice, you will learn about the complex systems in which support services are provided to patients and clients. In addition, you will learn the business and economics of service delivery systems and how professionals’ roles and responsibilities intersect.

This program will prepare you for an exciting career in the emerging field of systems navigation. Graduates will be prepared to work across various health and community service systems and will also have the skills to take on client leadership roles specific to seamless service delivery for patients and clients, often acting as the single point of contact. Career opportunities exist in the fields of nursing, occupational/physical therapy, social services, mental health and addictions, and child and youth care. 

Humber’s Sport Business Management graduate certificate program prepares you for employment within the broader areas of sport, with particular emphasis on management in the industry. You will develop knowledge and skills in areas such as the structure and functionality of the Canadian sport industry, sport marketing, sales, sponsorship, communications, sport hosting, event planning and management. You will also learn the practical business, human resources and administrative skills to pursue a career in the industry.

Work Placement

• The work placement consists of two components and occurs across industry sectors including professional and amateur sport, sport governing bodies, sport marketing and event management companies, community and private sector sport organizations. The placement provides valuable experience and industry contacts. The first component of the placement is concurrent with coursework and is a minimum of 210 hours. The second component of the placement is six weeks in length and a minimum of 35 hours per week.

Humber’s Welding Techniques certificate program is designed to help introduce prospective welders to the trade. The program aims to facilitate employment and entry into the apprenticeship program by giving you practical experience with trade regulations and practices. You will gain a solid understanding of the various technical theory and elements of the welding trade. You will be exposed to topics including health and safety, blueprint reading and sketching, applied math, communication, shielded metal arc welding, gas metal arc welding, introduction to computers, and all position structural welding. You will learn valuable skills by using the latest industry software programs and working in fully equipped up-to-date labs and shops. At Humber, skilled instructors highlight current trends within the industry and strive to duplicate situations that apprentices and skilled tradespeople will see in their everyday working life.

The Industrial Woodworking Technician diploma program (located at the Humber Centre for Trades & Technology) provides you with the knowledge and skills to construct and install basic cabinets, as well as build traditional furniture using recognized trade practices. By completing a series of woodworking projects, students explore various types of joinery and construction techniques using hand tools, portable power tools, stationary machines, as well as computer-based technologies. Time management skills and the ability to work to a deadline are developed and stressed throughout the program. Graduates of the program will be able to produce shop drawings, calculate a list of materials, cut out and assemble basic cabinetry or furniture, and apply a finish. Graduates are able to safely operate most common stationary woodworking machinery, as well as program and run a number of CNC machines.

Employer interest in our graduates has grown steadily during the program’s history. We offer a comprehensive program that provides a solid grounding in woodworking and prepares a student for employment in a wide range of areas including store fixtures, architectural millwork (doors and windows), the kitchen cabinet industry, and furniture construction. Our advisory committee of industry professionals reviews our curriculum and ensure that students are receiving relevant training to prepare them for work in a range of woodworking related fields.

Humber’s Funeral Director Class 1 (Embalming) diploma program draws students from around the world, preparing them to make a difference in the lives of people who are grieving the loss of a loved one. This is the only English-speaking Funeral Service Education program in Ontario.

Courses are designed with industry input, ensuring that what you’re learning is current and relevant. You will learn all aspects of funeral home operation, as well as the practical and theoretical sides of funeral service. Embalming lab courses will prepare you for the technical side of the program, while courses in issues of grief and bereavement prepare you for the emotional side. Courses in arranging, ethics and embalming will enable you to explain all options to families. Business courses will help you understand the challenges of operating a business.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:

• Provide an accurate explanation of the rationale behind his/her actions, grounded in a comprehensive understanding of the relevant policies, practices and financial implications that guide the performance of the scope of practice of the Funeral Director – Class 1 (embalming) role.
• Communicate clearly, sensitively and respectfully with potential purchasers all relevant information related to various options and possible implications of decisions made at the time of purchase, as permitted by legislation in the scope of practice for the specified licence classification including:
  • Explaining funeral service and disposition options including arterial embalming and restoration
  • Explaining clearly and accurately prearranging and prefunding services, product knowledge and merchandise and financial implications
  • Managing effectively and sensitively all applicable contractual negotiations and obligations, financing options, and requirements for service and product delivery referring to other licensed professionals when outside the legislative scope of practice
• Communicate and apply an accurate and comprehensive understanding of prearranging and prepayment including investment vehicles, insurance, trust reconciliation and financing of prepaid contracts within legislative scope of practice.
• Conduct oneself in a manner consistent with principles and accepted practices of the funeral sector, using professional language.
• Complete all aspects of business operations for a funeral establishment that provides embalming on site or transfer service, in the capacity of an owner/manager consistent with legislated responsibilities in a legal, ethical, safe and efficient manner across a broad range of predictable and unpredictable contexts.
• Arrange (prearrange) and document funeral services, disposition details, related transactions and follow up services with the legal representative in an effective, professional, caring and creative manner.
• Engage in, and plan for, ongoing personal and professional development, networking/community relations and inter- professional collaboration.
• Provide effective leadership and contribute to the supervision and mentoring of all team members, including licensees, support staff, and/or interns in a professional, caring and creative manner through providing appropriate direction as it relates to the delivery of funeral service.
• Lead, establish, maintain and participate effectively in funeral establishment work teams consisting of licensees, support staff and/or interns demonstrating at all times the ability to learn, grow and work together.
• Care for and handle the deceased respectfully and safely at all times.
• Complete and perform effectively and efficiently all non-embalming preparation processes and arterial embalming and restoration processes.
• Direct funeral services and visitation in a respectful and sensitive manner consistent with the direction of the legal representative.
• Complete prepaid contract related documents and related financial matters in accordance with applicable legislation.
• Coordinate and deliver the selected disposition services and follow up services, effectively, professionally and consistent with, and supportive of, the wishes of the legal representative.
• Make decisions ethically and professionally based on a comprehensive understanding of the knowledge and skills required of an owner/manager of the applicable business licence class pursuant to the Funeral, Burial and Cremation Services Act, 2002 (FBCSA).

Work Placement
The Bereavement Authority of Ontario, the provincial regulator, has approved that students of the program shall complete a one-year work placement before they can be licensed.
To progress into Semester 3, students must start a full-time (paid) work placement in a funeral home after they have successfully completed exams in Semester 2. During Semesters 3 through 5, students complete their learning by distance, and many of their assignments are based on the practical experience they are gaining in the funeral home. Humber assists students to find their placements by working with our industry partners to identify openings. Students are responsible for finding their own work placement with a licensed Ontario funeral establishment.

Humber’s Business Management diploma program gets down to business with a practical, skills-based approach that teaches you everything you need to know to achieve your goals and make a difference in organizations. Our curriculum gets you up to speed on the essential aspects of business including marketing, e-commerce, accounting, business writing and communications. Through individual and group assignments in courses taught by experienced professionals and entrepreneurs, you’ll build your business management knowledge and gain first-hand insights into current business practices, trends and opportunities.

In the first year, you will be introduced to an overview of fundamental business disciplines including the mathematics of finance, PC essentials, marketing, microeconomics, business law, services marketing and the principles of management. In the second year, the focus includes business computer applications, accounting, e-commerce, human resources administration, operations management, business finance, leadership and entrepreneurship.

Work Placement

In Semester 4, you will be assisted in finding a paid or unpaid business work placement, where you will practice your skills during an 84-hour assignment. This adds valuable hands-on experience to your resumé and provides excellent networking opportunities.
