Computer Systems Technician - Information Technology Infrastructure and Services diploma program prepares you for careers in Information and Communications Technology (ICT). You will build a foundation in electrical and logic circuits, and programming. You will also learn about the main hardware and software components of your computer and different features to improve performance of computer systems. Curriculum in the program prepares you for the role of system administrator whose responsibilities include installation, configuration and managing various operating systems including Microsoft servers, different distributions of Linux supported by virtualization tools and network infrastructure, supporting data and network security. You will also learn about data centre technologies that support small- and medium-sized businesses. Our unique program prepares graduates to examine, model and improve the energy and environmental performance of existing buildings; to support the design, construction and operation of new, sustainable buildings being built to increasingly stringent performance standards; to implement renewable energy technologies; and to support new approaches to understanding and managing energy use and building resilience into campuses, neighbourhoods or whole cities. Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:

  • Perform a land site assessment to determine potential for renewable energy harvesting, optimum placement of wind, solar and earth energy technologies and building orientation for passive solar gain and protection from the elements.
  • Perform an energy needs analysis for residential or small-scale commercial or industrial structures, designated under Section 9 of the Ontario Building Code, and identify building system components that save energy.
  • Perform an energy audit on residential, small-scale commercial and industrial buildings, designated under Section 9 of the Ontario Building Code, to determine energy efficiency, problem areas and energy loss and advise on corrective actions.

Humber’s Home Renovation Technician diploma program covers both the technical and business aspects of the home renovation industry. You will study all facets of house construction and basic building systems including building codes. Your courses will provide you with the business skills that you need to succeed in the industry, including management, estimating, finances and communications. Humber’s labs provide plenty of opportunity to gain practical, hands-on experience. The program is offered in an accelerated format, enabling you to enter the workforce sooner by completing the equivalent of four semesters of study in three semesters (in one calendar year).
The home renovation industry is booming with Canadians spending nearly $41 billion a year to repair, remodel and update their homes. You can find employment as an assistant site superintendent, a renovator’s helper, or you can work in a specific sub trade such as drywall, hardwood installation, trim work and more. With a few years of work experience, you could be ready to work in construction management or start your own business.

Humber’s Funeral Director Class 1 (Embalming) diploma program draws students from around the world, preparing them to make a difference in the lives of people who are grieving the loss of a loved one. This is the only English-speaking Funeral Service Education program in Ontario.

Courses are designed with industry input, ensuring that what you’re learning is current and relevant. You will learn all aspects of funeral home operation, as well as the practical and theoretical sides of funeral service. Embalming lab courses will prepare you for the technical side of the program, while courses in issues of grief and bereavement prepare you for the emotional side. Courses in arranging, ethics and embalming will enable you to explain all options to families. Business courses will help you understand the challenges of operating a business.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:

  • Provide an accurate explanation of the rationale behind his/her actions, grounded in a comprehensive understanding of the relevant policies, practices and financial implications that guide the performance of the scope of practice of the Funeral Director – Class 1 (embalming) role.
  • Communicate clearly, sensitively and respectfully with potential purchasers all relevant information related to various options and possible implications of decisions made at the time of purchase, as permitted by legislation in the scope of practice for the specified licence classification including:
    • Explaining funeral service and disposition options including arterial embalming and restoration
    • Explaining clearly and accurately prearranging and prefunding services, product knowledge and merchandise and financial implications
    • Managing effectively and sensitively all applicable contractual negotiations and obligations, financing options, and requirements for service and product delivery referring to other licensed professionals when outside the legislative scope of practice
  • Communicate and apply an accurate and comprehensive understanding of prearranging and prepayment including investment vehicles, insurance, trust reconciliation and financing of prepaid contracts within legislative scope of practice.
  • Conduct oneself in a manner consistent with principles and accepted practices of the funeral sector, using professional language.
  • Complete all aspects of business operations for a funeral establishment that provides embalming on site or transfer service, in the capacity of an owner/manager consistent with legislated responsibilities in a legal, ethical, safe and efficient manner across a broad range of predictable and unpredictable contexts.
  • Arrange (prearrange) and document funeral services, disposition details, related transactions and follow up services with the legal representative in an effective, professional, caring and creative manner.

Work Placement
The Bereavement Authority of Ontario, the provincial regulator, has approved that students of the program shall complete a one-year work placement before they can be licensed.
To progress into Semester 3, students must start a full-time (paid) work placement in a funeral home after they have successfully completed exams in Semester 2. During Semesters 3 through 5, students complete their learning by distance, and many of their assignments are based on the practical experience they are gaining in the funeral home. Humber assists students to find their placements by working with our industry partners to identify openings. Students are responsible for finding their own work placement with a licensed Ontario funeral establishment.

This program is a path for students already holding a bachelor's degree in any discipline other than accounting and who are interested in pursuing the Chartered Professional Accounting designation. No prior accounting knowledge is required.

Upon successful completion of the program, a graduate will:

  • Record all transactions in accordance with the professional accounting conceptual framework for financial reporting.
  • Prepare accurate, relevant and timely corporate financial statements and other financial information according to the respective needs of stakeholders.
  • Identify and analyze relevant financial and managerial accounting information to support effective decision-making.
  • Produce and present accurate and timely financial information using relevant technology.
  • Utilize statistical techniques effectively in the analysis of financial information.
  • Recommend effective information systems structures to support efficient business operations.
  • Recognize legal limitations and implications arising in business situations and make recommendations to mitigate risks. 
  • Communicate across various levels in an organization clearly, concisely and accurately in both the written and spoken form to fulfill the intended purpose.
  • Apply ethical, discipline-specific practices that contribute to the local and global community through social responsibility, economic commitment and environmental stewardship.
  • Apply corporate finance techniques to support strategic and operational management decisions.
  • Interpret and apply personal and corporate tax legislation to ensure compliance.
  • Plan effective external, internal and information systems audits to meet compliance and assurance requirements.

Work Placement
Humber has the only graduate certificate of its kind in Ontario that provides students with hands-on work experience in the field of accounting. Through a mandatory 160 hour work placement, students will make industry connections and can gain experience in small, medium and large organizations, and in entrepreneurial start-ups.

Humber’s Early Childhood Education (ECE) diploma prepares you to work with children (birth to 12 years) and their families. Students can expect to attain and exceed the practice-ready knowledge, skills and attitudes employers are seeking from ECE graduates in supporting children, families and the community by engaging in innovative learning and simulation experiences. These experiences take place within Humber's Carol Reid Early Childhood Education Lab, as well as within the Humber Child Development Centre - interacting with our scenic arboretum and nature-inspired playground and exploring responsive inclusive teaching methods and leading edge curriculum.

  • The image of the child and the significance of viewing children from a wide variety of lenses
  • How to create responsive, inclusive play-based learning environments and natural play spaces for children, families and the community
  • Human development

  • Social justice, advocacy, leadership and the role of the ECE professional
  • The importance of collaborating with relevant community agencies
  • How ministry and government legislation and guidelines inform practice

Work Placement

  • We believe it is necessary for our students to have extensive experience in the profession in order to be successful as registered early childhood educators. Students can expect to have work placement experiences within the program and will be required to complete approximately 450-600 work placement hours over three semesters. During these three semesters, students may have field practicums such as working with families and children (various age groups) in licensed child care or preschool settings, EarlyON Child and Family Centres, various community programs, full day kindergarten, or home based child care programs. A different placement for Semesters 2, 3, and 4 ensures a range of experiences prior to graduation and equips students with a range of networks within the community to explore employment in the future.
