Due to the multidisciplinary relevance of the field, you may combine your studies with disciplines such as English, History, French, Indigenous Learning, Psychology, or Political Science.  We are also one of the few universities in Canada to offer a minor in Professional Ethics. Our Department of Chemistry is well-equipped for both teaching and research, with small class sizes to ensure you have the support necessary to succeed. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of Chemistry, we encourage you to pursue your interests in the field and the other core sciences. In addition to your Chemistry degree, you may combine your studies with a degree in Biology and/or Education, or a Specialization in Medical Sciences.

The Department of Sociology is committed to fostering the development of socially responsible citizens of the world. We offer a graduate program dedicated to enhancing students' knowledge of the societies in which they live, while increasing their ability to think independently and critically about important social issues.

MA in Sociology: Social Justice Studies Specialization

The Social Justice Studies specialization enables students to conduct original research on social justice issues by drawing on the disciplinary tools provided by Sociology. Students may investigate any topic relevant to social justice studies, by utilizing appropriate theoretical frameworks and research methodologies from Sociology. While a strong foundation in Sociology is emphasized, interdisciplinary work, public engagement, and community activism are also encouraged where appropriate.

Geography is the study of spatial patterns and processes on Earth's surface and the relationship between society, populations and the environment. Our Geography programs focus on physical geography, dealing with spatial aspects of land, water and the atmosphere, as well as human geography which explores the cultural, political and economic forces behind the distribution of human activities. 

As a Geography student you will spend the first two years building a foundation of knowledge in a wide spectrum of geographical themes which examine: 

• Where populations and activities are located on Earth 
• When and why physical and environmental patterns change 
• The impacts these changes have on human and physical environments 
• The responses to these impacts 

In your final two years of study you may specialize in a particular area including:

Our courses reflect the breadth of the discipline, as well as geographical techniques and research methods such as digital photogrammetry, remote sensing, soil and water testing and geographic information systems (GIS). We also offer regional field camps and a Regional or International Field Study course that is available in your final year of study.

Our Department of Visual Arts offers hands-on degree programs that develop both the technical and conceptual skills needed to transform ideas into art. As a Visual Arts student you will learn to: 

• Communicate visually through various media including drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture and ceramics 
• Develop studio skills through practical applications 
• Interpret the world, cultures, and daily life through a creative lens 
• Critically analyze visual culture 

In addition to the in-depth study of studio disciplines, our programs also include the study of art history and art theory, professional development, and outreach opportunities with local art galleries and creative organizations 

We are a relatively small Department with a close-knit community of student artists. Our small size allows our faculty to focus on you as an individual artist and offer personal attention within the studio class setting. We also attend a field trip each year to visit museums and galleries, to supplement the structure of in-class learning. Our classes have visited art and cultural centres in Toronto, Chicago, Montreal, Ottawa, Minneapolis, and New York. 

Our Department of Visual Arts hosts an annual Juried Student Art Exhibition to celebrate the high quality of student art produced as part of our programs. This event is unique to Lakehead University and draws in hundreds of art lovers, patrons, and collectors over the five-week exhibition period.

The Department of Sociology is committed to fostering the development of socially responsible citizens of the world. We offer a graduate program dedicated to enhancing students' knowledge of the societies in which they live, while increasing their ability to think independently and critically about important social issues. The Gerontology Program collaborates with five departments including Sociology, to provide students with an innovative, interdisciplinary learning perspective. Students have the opportunity to access multifaceted resources and work together with complementary disciplines.

The Department of Women's Studies at Lakehead University is dedicated to furthering an understanding of the importance of gender as a category of analysis in scholarly inquiry. Through interdisciplinary instruction, students will critically assess the relevance of existing models of knowledge in reflecting women's experience and scholarship. The aim of the program is to encourage the development and integration of feminist teaching, learning, and research within the university community and the community at large. This Collaborative Master's program allows students to combine advanced disciplinary research with feminist scholarship from the interdisciplinary field of Women's Studies. Upon completion of the program, the degree awarded specifies the discipline of the participating academic unit and notes the Specialization in Women's Studies.

Indigenous Learning is an interdisciplinary, cross-cultural department open to both Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal students. Borrowing from subjects including history, geography, anthropology and sociology, this program will examine societal structures and the ways the Indigenous population relates to mainstream populations in Canada.

Throughout our programs, we aim to enhance your awareness of Aboriginal life experiences, culture and political issues. We focus on the current reality of Aboriginal Peoples as opposed to the traditional, anthropological approach. While history is a component of your Indigenous Learning studies, it will be within the context of lived implications in order to challenge assumptions and mistaken understandings about Aboriginal Peoples.

As part of the Faculty of Natural Resources Management, our Environmental Management program will provide you with a sound understanding of natural processes in environmental ecosystems, including a strong background in forest environments and technical experience using industry-standard geomatics tools. 

Our Honours Bachelor of Environmental Management shares a common curriculum with the Honours Bachelor of Science in Forestry for the first two years.Through a specialization, you will delve deeper into the areas of Fish and Wildlife Conservation and Management, Conservation Planning and Management, and Sustainable Land Use.

Upon graduation from your Honours Bachelor of Environmental Management, you will be eligible to receive your Environmental Professional Certification from ECO Canada. If you decide to pursue the Wildlife Conservation and Management specialization, you will be eligible for accreditation as a Certified Wildlife Biologist by the Wildlife Society of America.
