A horticultural technician works with plants and has knowledge and skills in ornamental horticulture and plant health care. The fundamentals of grounds keeping, including safe snow and ice removal, as well as sustainable agriculture practices and green technologies are also introduced.

Construction engineering technicians work in the construction industry with contractors, government building departments and engineers on a range of building construction projects. Learn how to integrate science and engineering concepts with industry-specific technologies to assist in the development and implementation of project goals in accordance with project plans, sustainability practices, and industry laws, codes and standards.

• Work with current versions of industry software, including AutoCAD, to create engineering drawings for land development applications and building engineering according to provincial and municipal standards. 
• The program combines classroom instruction, hands-on learning in the field and lab work in Loyalist’s Building Sciences Lab.
• Gain experience in surveying, structural drafting, testing and inspection of construction materials, project supervision and estimating.
• Apply your skills on a construction site while working one day a week during a semester-long on-the-job field placement.
• Year one is common with the Civil Engineering Technician program, allowing for ease of transfer.

Experiential Learning
Explore topics such as planning and coordination, legislative frameworks, risk and assessment, incident management systems, incident response and crisis communications to prepare for a career providing management expertise in a range of emergency situations.

• Learn how to develop, review and update emergency policies and programs based upon relevant legislation, standards and procedures, and what is required to conduct effective hazards identification and risk assessments.
• Explore developing, conducting and evaluating training programs and exercises to test current emergency management programs while assessing the integration and compatibility of various emergency polices, plans and procedures.
• Develop strategies for implementing and maintaining a business continuity plan that will ensure the recovery of normal operations for affected businesses and industries.

This hands-on introduction to residential design includes consideration of the environment, building codes and residential building design practices. It delivers marketable skills in under a year of study and prepares students for further study in the Architectural Technician/Technology program.

• Get a practical blend of classroom instruction and hands-on studio experience.
• Design a small building by creatively addressing the use of space, materials, code requirements and the environment.
• Showcase creativity and analytical skills to create a design, and then bring your concepts to life with a 3D models.
• In less than a year, you will develop marketable skills and knowledge in construction drawings, residential building codes, computer drafting (AutoCAD and SketchUp), construction materials and methods, and presenting your designs.

A career in radio can take you from coast to coast. Get hands-on professional training at two College radio stations, and prepare for a variety of exciting opportunities on the air and behind the scenes.

Experiential learning
From the first week of classes you’ll get hands-on experience in a live, on-air environment, preparing you for actual broadcast conditions in the industry. In 2014, the CRTC renewed the broadcast licence for CJLX-FM for the maximum seven-year term, until 2021.

• First-year students operate Hot Hits, a radio station that streams online and is equipped with the latest automation system, production equipment and music scheduling software.
• Towards the end of their first year, students are ready to run 91X FM (CJLX-FM 91.3), a licensed, full-power campus-community College radio station serving the local region.
• Get experience in on-air performance, creative writing, audio production, sales, marketing, promotions, programming, and social media and web content development.
• Hear from guest speakers representing commercial radio stations and the music industry.
• Get valuable work experience during a four-week field placement anywhere in the country, with the potential to graduate into a job.

• SEMA has invited Loyalist students to participate in its student placement program for the past seven years – the only College Automotive program in Canada to participate in the program.
• Selected parts of the course content mirrors that of the three levels of the Automotive Service Technician Apprenticeship program.

As a Developmental Services Worker (DSW), you will assist people with disabilities to live as valued, contributing members of the community. Apply theory in a real-world setting with three faculty-supervised field placements:

• Begin with four weeks in the second semester and increase to seven weeks, and then 12 weeks in the final semester.
• Work on-the-job three to four days per week, and bring those experiences back to the classroom to enhance your learning.
• Students have completed placements in residential programs such as Community Living and Pathways to Independence; public and private schools; adult education programs; and organizations in their home communities.

Experiential learning
In the Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (HRAC) Techniques program students will:

• Gain solid skills and knowledge in the design, operation and maintenance of energy-efficient, building environmental systems, in heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVAC/R).
• Learn to size, install, repair and maintain building environmental systems for the residential and light commercial sector.
• Develop practical skills through hands-on experience in Loyalist's labs, working on a wide range of furnaces, air conditioners, refrigeration equipment and other appliances, including the latest sustainable heating and cooling technology.
• Develop cross-disciplinary, industry-ready skills in soldering, wiring and electrical control circuitry and troubleshooting for HVAC and gas installations.
• Use computer-aided design software to assess building heating and cooling requirements, select appropriate equipment, review HVAC system drawings and specifications for the residential market and light commercial market and confirm building code requirements.
