They work within the justice system – focusing on keeping people out of it through prevention, intervention and rehabilitation. Help build stronger, safer communities by helping people at risk gain the skills and support they need to make positive life choices.

Experiential learning
Our program adapts to emerging policies and best practices to prepare students for the workplace — with practical, hands-on learning:

• Sharpen your assessment and communication skills during scenario-based role-plays, emphasizing personal safety and the protection of staff, clients and the community.
• Visit adult and youth detention facilities and earn a certificate in Non-Violent Crisis Intervention. 
• Hear from guest speakers who share their real-life experiences with post-traumatic stress, suicide interventions and fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, as well as professionals working in group homes, federal and provincial corrections and sexual assault centres.
• Help clients across the spectrum of the justice system with a three-fold focus on prevention, intervention and reintegration.

Create engaging content and deliver it through any medium. In this hands-on program, you’ll earn a full spectrum of skills ranging from television production and digital filmmaking to web streaming and interactive content creation. With access to digital cameras, audio, lighting, and grip equipment we enable Loyalist College students to tell stories with impressive production values and create meaningful work for their portfolios.

You will learn how to meet the needs of the television and digital media broadcast industry by applying industry-standard production equipment, using strategies that enhance work performance an:d

• Operate industry standard production equipment, in-studio and on location, to create television, video, and/or web content for multiple platforms
• Keep current with the needs of the television and digital media broadcast industry using strategies that enhance work performance and guide professional development
• Plan and prepare interviews, scripts, and reporting content for use in television, video, or digital media productions
• Participate in marketing activities to promote independent productions and/or a station’s brand and products
• Evaluate the artistic and technical success of filmmaking and multimedia projects to build a toolkit of strategies to meet client and audience needs
• Conduct work safely in accordance with all applicable acts, regulations, legislation, and codes to ensure personal and public safety

Experiential learning

• Participate in the planning and preparation of television, mobile, and/or web productions
• Monitor and maintain the technical quality of productions during recording and broadcasts using resources, equipment, and protocols
• Use business skills and accepted industry practices in the creation of television, video, and/or web productions
• Deliver television, video, and digital or web content via multiple platforms in formats that meet current broadcast industry standards
• Use creative solutions in filmmaking and multimedia projects to complete projects to client and audience expectations

As our dependence on electricity grows, so too does the demand for skilled electrical workers. Electrical Engineering Techniques students are introduced to electrical principles and building construction wiring while technician students advance into industrial automation and PLC programming, preparing for tomorrow's trends in next generation robotics.

Experiential learning
Get practical, real-life training in a supportive learning environment that nurtures one-on-one relationships with instructors:

• The first year provides a working understanding of electricity and electronics, as well as the fundamental skills needed in electrical construction and automation.
• Develop skills in electrical installation, motor control and the basics of industrial processes — including Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), fluid power and process control.
• Hands-on work with actual PLCs in your first year, not just simulation software.
• Students gain a solid understanding of the Ontario Electrical Safety Code.
• A second year of study delivers skills required in installing, configuring, maintaining and calibrating industrial control systems, including industrial robotic and automated production systems.
•  Students can apply their knowledge to extracurricular projects, such as building a racecar simulator arcade game using only automation equipment and software.

Art and Design Foundation offers a stimulating hands-on, studio based curriculum in which aspiring artist and designers learn a broad range of art and design disciplines. Traditional skills in drawing, painting, printmaking and sculpture are covered as well as a range of digital techniques and computer-based software, all of which contribute to the development of a quality portfolio.

Build on your knowledge and experience in the health care and social service fields with a two-semester post-graduate certificate. Gain the skills and attitudes necessary to provide a range of support to help clients, specifically the aged and the terminally ill and their families, live as independently as possible through the provision of compassionate care where quality of life is the primary objective and symptom control is the basis for care.

Experiential Learning
Through hands-on learning and an interprofessional health care team approach, gain the skills required to provide supportive care to clients who are experiencing physical, cognitive, emotional and behavioural challenges:

• Explore strategies for developing and maintaining therapeutic relationships with aged and palliative patients, thereby fostering their dignity, self-worth and independence.
• Learn how to effectively communicate with aging and palliative patients as well as with health care team members.
• Study how individuals cope with pain as well as appropriate measures for providing comfort and pain management to the terminally ill and their families within your scope of practice.
• Become familiar with ethical, legal and spiritual considerations with regard to the care of vulnerable populations, and develop an understanding of individual and multicultural approaches to aging, death, dying and grieving.
• Apply theory and concepts as related to caring for vulnerable populations and palliative patients through a combination of a clinical practicum and immersive simulation.

Prepare for a future in one of the fastest-growing segments of the financial services industry. Fintech has disrupted the traditional way of doing business by shifting the focus to mobile and digitization of services for consumers. With an interest in technology and change management, students will develop the relevant skills by studying topics such as emerging market trends, monetary and fiscal policy, business strategy, artificial intelligence and machine learning, and emotional intelligence. Graduates will be prepared to explore the world of Fintech with job-ready skills.

Gain valuable experience working alongside community partners exploring how FinTech solutions can be used to provide a competitive advantage in business, industry, and financial services.

• Analyze data to inform strategic decision-making when implementing Fintech solutions.
• Propose cryptography solutions to support secure financial transactions to manage cryptocurrencies for various stakeholders.
• Design and implement new Fintech products and services that enhance the efficiency and convenience of transactions through mobile connectivity.
• Adhere to ethical and legal guidelines to ensure data security, integrity, and confidentiality in the delivery of Fintech applications.
• Analyze organizational structures and management processes to recommend improvements to organizational performance through financial technology solutions.
• Develop plans using principles of entrepreneurship to start up, manage, and expand a small business.

The Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Techniques and Technician programs provide students with a balanced blend of theoretical knowledge and experiential learning to enable its graduates to install, service, maintain and update heating, refrigeration, and air conditioning systems. With multiple pathways to follow and a variety of career options to choose from, Loyalist's HRAC programs are designed to prepare its graduates to operate in an environment dominated by climate change, rising fuel costs, and sustainable choices.

Experiential learning
In the Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (HRAC) Techniques program students will:

• Gain solid skills and knowledge in the design, operation and maintenance of energy-efficient, building environmental systems, in heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration (HVAC/R).
• Learn to size, install, repair and maintain building environmental systems for the residential and light commercial sector.
• Develop practical skills through hands-on experience in Loyalist's labs, working on a wide range of furnaces, air conditioners, refrigeration equipment and other appliances, including the latest sustainable heating and cooling technology.
• Develop cross-disciplinary, industry-ready skills in soldering, wiring and electrical control circuitry and troubleshooting for HVAC and gas installations.
• Use computer-aided design software to assess building heating and cooling requirements, select appropriate equipment, review HVAC system drawings and specifications for the residential market and light commercial market and confirm building code requirements.

This hands-on introduction to residential design includes consideration of the environment, building codes and residential building design practices. It delivers marketable skills in under a year of study and prepares students for further study in the Architectural Technician/Technology program.

Bring your design ideas to life in this hands-on program:

• Get a practical blend of classroom instruction and hands-on studio experience.
• Design a small building by creatively addressing the use of space, materials, code requirements and the environment.
• Showcase creativity and analytical skills to create a design, and then bring your concepts to life with a 3D models.
• In less than a year, you will develop marketable skills and knowledge in construction drawings, residential building codes, computer drafting (AutoCAD and SketchUp), construction materials and methods, and presenting your designs.

• Learn with a mix of group assignments, community projects and online class activities.
• Work one-on-one with a faculty advisor each semester to select electives suitable to you — go broad or specialize — it’s up to you.
• Choose from a wide range of electives, and explore opportunities you may not even know, with options as wide-ranging as human biology, computer applications, psychology, technology and humanity.
• Some electives are available online or offer virtual learning experiences, such as the Ecowalk.
• Gain work experience one day a week in your second semester.
• Expand your on-the-job experiences to two days a week in the third semester.
• Past placements include museums, art galleries, funeral homes, veterinary offices, long-term care facilities, schools and social service agencies.
• General Arts & Science (year two): After one year of vocational exploration, prepare for university studies during year two with a liberal arts university-focused diploma.
