Experiential learning
In this hands-on program, you will learn to effectively support clients in their day-to-day activities, emphasizing trust, respect and individual choice:

• Learn in small clinical and lab groups under the guidance of experienced faculty.
• Practise monitoring and recording changes to clients’ conditions in Loyalist’s Human Simulation Lab with manikins simulating realistic scenarios.
• Learn from guest speakers about a wide variety of topics pertinent to supporting residents in long-term care and clients in their own homes.
• Learn how to shop for clients and provide nutritious meals on a balanced budget.
• Learn and practise skills in a virtual learning environment (VLE) as an avatar.
• Learning combines theory, laboratory practice and clinical placement all in the same week so students can apply what they’ve learned in a real-life setting.
• Students have completed placements with Belmont Long-Term Care Facility, Moira Place, Hastings Manor, EJ McQuigge Lodge, Trent Valley Lodge Nursing Home, Pine Meadow Nursing Home, Hastings Centennial Manor, Helen Henderson Care Centre Lodge, the Victorian Order of Nurses, Canadian Red Cross, ParaMed and St. Elizabeth’s Belleville.

This program delivers concrete, marketable skills with a dual focus on financial and management accounting:

• Develop managerial skills in budgeting, product costing and price setting, eliminating financial waste and finding operating efficiencies.
• Access opportunities to gain certification in industry-leading software such as MS Excel, Sage 50 Accounting and QuickBooks.
• A third year of study provides advanced knowledge of financial and management accounting, corporate taxation and audit techniques, focused on obtaining the ACAF certification.
• Collaborate and formulate strategy in simulated business competitions.
• Learn from case studies and guest speakers from the local business community.
• Put your skills to work in Loyalist’s student-run tax clinic. For the 2016 tax year, students completed more than 200 returns — putting more than $245,000 back in the hands of Loyalist students.
• In year three, put your skills to work in our Money Matters clinic and gain customer service experience assisting students with budgeting and financial matters.
• A four-week field placement in third year provides valuable industry experience and networking, and the opportunity to graduate into a job.

Police officers make our communities a better place. They do this by preventing crime, enforcing laws and improving the quality of life for all. Loyalist's program prepares you to be a great candidate for police services. To help you get started and make connections, Loyalist Police Foundations provides eligible students with experience, observing police officers in action, at their side.

Prepare to excel in the satisfying and fascinating profession of policing. Enter the field confidently with a combination of theory and practical experiences.

• Gain valuable field or field-related experience in two separate placements.
• Practise interpreting and applying the law from class to courtroom.
• Participate in a mock trial in a real courtroom with real judges.
• Role-play different scenarios using uniforms and police training equipment.
• Volunteer with police services in roles which have included emergency response training, front line officer training, mock disaster participation, and community policing activities.
• Learn to put personal safety and respect for victims into practice.

As our dependence on electricity grows, so too does the demand for skilled electrical workers. Electrical Engineering Techniques students are introduced to electrical principles and building construction wiring while technician students advance into industrial automation and PLC programming, preparing for tomorrow's trends in next generation robotics.

Experiential learning
Get practical, real-life training in a supportive learning environment that nurtures one-on-one relationships with instructors:

• The first year provides a working understanding of electricity and electronics, as well as the fundamental skills needed in electrical construction and automation.
• Develop skills in electrical installation, motor control and the basics of industrial processes — including Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), fluid power and process control.
• Hands-on work with actual PLCs in your first year, not just simulation software.
• Students gain a solid understanding of the Ontario Electrical Safety Code.
• A second year of study delivers skills required in installing, configuring, maintaining and calibrating industrial control systems, including industrial robotic and automated production systems.
•  Students can apply their knowledge to extracurricular projects, such as building a racecar simulator arcade game using only automation equipment and software.

Radiation safety protection personnel monitor and control radiation exposure while implementing safety measures. Prepare for a career working together with physicists, occupational safety and health specialists, and public health officials in various nuclear, health care and natural environments.

In this hands-on program you will develop confidence and expertise in designing and implementing fitness programs for both individuals and groups:

• Learn to accurately assess health and fitness levels, evaluate progress and develop exercise prescriptions tailored to meet the interests and lifestyle goals of every client.
• Train and teach in Loyalist’s newly renovated on-campus Fitness Centre and program-dedicated fitness lab.
• Gain applied knowledge of anatomy and physiology, kinesiology, exercise prescription, nutrition, chronic disease prevention and entrepreneurship and marketing.
• Network with guest speakers who are industry professionals in fitness and wellness.
• Assist and develop programs for personal training clients at the College.
• Earn 320 hours of industry experience in two field placements.

A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. The precision work of welders and fabricators holds up bridges and delivers miners safely underground. Gain skills in welding, fabrication, detailing and millwrighting that you can use across the country, from coast to coast, in virtually any industry.

Experiential learning
Prepare to meet increasingly complex industry standards through hands-on learning in Loyalist’s newly equipped The Bay of Quinte Skills Centre:

• Follow projects from the engineering drawings stage, through cutting and forming processes, to the completion of the job and quality inspection.
• Create with new and evolving technologies such as CNC press brakes, CNC plasma cutting and 3D designing.
• Practise welding techniques such as gas metal arc welding, shielded metal arc welding and gas tungsten arc welding.
• Participate in the Ontario Skills Competition and field trips to the Canadian Manufacturing Technology Show.
• Expand your theoretical and practical skill set, along with in-depth trade practices and job planning skills, in the two-year diploma program.

This hands-on introduction to residential design includes consideration of the environment, building codes and residential building design practices. It delivers marketable skills in under a year of study and prepares students for further study in the Architectural Technician/Technology program.

Bring your design ideas to life in this hands-on program:

• Get a practical blend of classroom instruction and hands-on studio experience.
• Design a small building by creatively addressing the use of space, materials, code requirements and the environment.
• Showcase creativity and analytical skills to create a design, and then bring your concepts to life with a 3D models.
• In less than a year, you will develop marketable skills and knowledge in construction drawings, residential building codes, computer drafting (AutoCAD and SketchUp), construction materials and methods, and presenting your designs.

Get on the road to success! The fast-paced, ever-changing automotive trade could be the perfect career for you. To become an apprentice, you must be registered with the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities and work for an employer who accepts full responsibility for your instruction in all aspects of the trade. Your in-class learning is completed at Loyalist.

• Learn while you earn, with on-the-job training and education.
• Students in the Automotive Service Technician Apprenticeship program must be employed by a registered garage and signed on with the Ministry of Colleges and Universities (MCU) as an Automotive Service Technician Apprentice.
• Once you are employed and signed on with the Ministry, you will be notified when in-school training is available.
• Your apprenticeship requirements include completing a skill set book, 6,000 hours of on-the-job training and three levels of in-school training for a total of 720 hours.
• You can attend three full-time blocks of training, each eight weeks long, or study at Loyalist one day per week to complete your three levels.
• Learning combines classroom instruction and practical theory labs.
• Put your knowledge to the test in state-of-the-art service bays.

The legalization of cannabis has created a burgeoning cannabis job market, both within Canada and internationally. Develop the in-depth skills needed to support cannabis product development, inform process optimization, and address natural product quality, consistency and safety within this emerging industry.

Experiential learning
This hands-on program is delivered in collaboration with Loyalist’s Applied Research Centre for Natural Products and Medical Cannabis (ARC), Canada’s only College laboratory approved to conduct research with cannabis under the Narcotic Control Regulations, as listed on the Government of Canada’s website.

• Develop the in-demand skills needed for success in the cannabis industry through unparalleled training experiences:
  • Study in a Health Canada licensed facility on advanced extraction technologies with an array of state-of-the art analytical instrumentation. A focus on green technologies, such as supercritical CO2 extraction, aligns with industry’s transition away from the use of petrochemical solvents.
  • Learn how to apply a range of lab techniques for the extraction and analysis of cannabis to increase the quality, consistency and safety of cannabis and cannabis products.
  • Understand relevant legislations, regulations and guidelines pertaining to the cannabis industry, and explore appropriate security and safety protocols.
  • Apply your knowledge to real-world challenges through work integrated learning (WIL) with Licensed Producers.
