The Bachelor of Communication Studies program provides students with a solid foundation in the fundamental skills of critical thinking, writing, editing, and research. Common coursework for professional communication and journalism majors builds a foundation in language, composition, visual communication, communication theory, communication law and research methods, supported by a liberal arts framework. The courses in the majors offer depth, specialization, and choice. The minors provide additional scope and depth to your studies. The theatre production major prepares you to work in live and recorded entertainment sectors as a technician, artisan, craftsperson and manager. Through hands-on work experience, you produce the entire MacEwan University theatre season. Trained in the fundamental areas of theatre production, you learn to apply those skills as a member of a variety of creative teams: stage and production management, costuming, scenic painting, scenic construction, lighting, video, properties and audio.

What to expect
From your first term until the final year of your degree, you are a member of a variety of creative teams: stage and production management, costume, scenic painting, scenic construction, lighting, video, properties and audio. The theory you learn in class is immediately put into practice through hands-on activities.

In the first two years, you complete required foundational courses. In the third and fourth years, you have the opportunity to focus on a specific area of theatre production and to enhance your learning with courses from other disciplines.

The Music Theatre Performance major prepares you for a career in music theatre through an intense, conservatory-style program of training in acting, singing and dancing.

Early in the program, you are immersed in the fundamentals of these performance skills. As you progress through the four years, you refine, experiment and acquire the skills to create and perform in a variety of theatrical styles and venues.

From your first year, you are introduced to the theory and practice of musical theatre, guided by educators who are also working professional theatre directors, actors, musical directors and choreographers. Learning is intense, and the pace is demanding but also highly satisfying in this hands-on program. You graduate as a strong advocate of theatre and all arts, prepared for a long-term career in the local, national and international communities of theatre artists.

Bachelor of Applied Human Service Administration (BAHSA) is a distance-delivered program designed for individuals working in the health or human service field who hold, or strive to hold, supervisory or management positions. Distance study makes the program accessible to students regardless of geographic location and provides the flexibility to balance studies with professional and family responsibilities. Students access their course material and readings online and become part of a virtual community of learners. Faculty guide student learning through online class discussions and activities.

The curriculum includes theory in administration, with an emphasis on leadership, supervision and management. Studies include human, financial and physical resource management, managing change, communication, community-based practice, research practices and trend and issue analysis. Assignments are practical in nature and generally involve the application of theory to the student’s workplace. Building on a previous diploma or degree, the program consists of ten 3-credit theory courses and two 15-credit directed field studies. Students may complete the directed field studies in their current workplace or in an appropriate agency. Study may be full or part-time. Students have six years to complete the program; however, it may be completed in as little as three years.
