It is the second language of the United States and is becoming popular in established economic powers such as China and emerging ones like Brazil and India. Students alternate academic semesters with work placements in industry, government or private organizations. Students will apply classroom studies to real-world settings and develop practical skills for today’s business environment.

The major in criminology, administered by the Department of Sociology, aims to promote the academic study of different facets of criminal justice organizations and practices, including the legal, political and social contexts in which they operate. This program would be beneficial for students with a scholarly interest in deviant/criminal behaviour, social justice and legal issues, policing, corrections, law enforcement, rehabilitation, and criminal justice themes more broadly, including those who have completed the diploma in police studies; experienced police officers; and others working in a policing, correctional, or criminal justice environment. The major in criminology does not constitute a qualification in policing or corrections.

The criminology major promotes critical thinking about the legal, political, and social influences that impact crime and society, and our criminal justice system. This program would be beneficial if you have a scholarly interest in policing, the courts, corrections, or another facet of the justice system. Our faculty work closely with our local, national, and international communities and we offer many courses through distance learning to specifically respond to the demands of social/justice system work.

Folklore is the study of the oral and written traditions, beliefs, myths, tales and practices of a people. While folklorists study traditions passed down through generations, they also consider expressive elements found in popular culture and media. Many look at modern phenomena, from urban legends to jokes, from hockey culture to skateboarding, from Ouija boards to tourism.

Our Department of Folklore has built an international reputation as a thriving, imaginative, eclectic and highly professional department. Ethnographic field research practices are fundamental to folklore studies.

Process engineering is a diversified discipline designed to satisfy the needs of various processing industries including oil and gas and mineral processing. It encompasses new development, design, optimization and operation of sustainable processes for human needs, ensuring safety and protection of the environment. Process engineers process substances through biological, chemical and physical processes to produce useful products such as petrochemicals, gasoline, food, pharmaceuticals, metals and alloys.

• Memorial’s process engineering program is unique in that it is the first of its kind in Canada with a mandatory co-op program, which provides students with opportunities to work in a range of industries from oil production to cheese processing. You will also learn in state-of-the-art laboratories and participate in unique research projects that are changing the future of engineering.
• Our courses and research emphasize environmentally conscious engineering: the importance of development while conserving resources for generations to come. You will study safe, sustainable development and learn about the important role in resource lifecycles.

Laws are fundamental to any successful society. Law and society is the study of the place of these laws in social, political, economic and cultural life. Throughout history, as communities and countries have struggled to define and serve justice, social, cultural, and legal institutions have been essential. By studying how legal and social systems are interconnected and how law is woven into communities, students gain an understanding of what happens when legal instruments and institutions succeed and when they fail.

Law and society at Memorial
The law and society major encompasses many diverse disciplines of study, among them anthropology, linguistics, philosophy, political science, police studies and sociology. It introduces you to different facets of law and the role of law in society through the ages.

The law and society major is housed in the Department of Political Science.

The bachelor of science generally takes four years to complete. After one year of study, you may apply to your desired major program; you may also select a minor. You can choose from a full range of majors, minors and joint programs to pursue your areas of interest while getting excellent preparation for graduate work or careers in your discipline.

Students who wish to declare more than one major should consult the joint program options listed in the links above. If no joint option exists, students can complete a double major by fulfilling all the requirements of two individual majors.

Russian at Memorial:-
The Russian major combines learning the Russian language and developing a specialization in various aspects of Russian culture, literature and contemporary issues, relevant to the importance of Russia as a world power in the 21st century. Students can avail of study abroad and internship opportunities in Russia.

Environmental engineering has become an increasingly important discipline due to complexity and multi-disciplinary nature of the environmental issues dealing with human health and ecosystem protection. To find cost-effective engineering solutions to these complex issues, it is important to acquire broad-based education and professional training in inter-disciplinary fields of physical, chemical and biological principles, resource management and mitigation measures besides in-depth knowledge in environmental engineering. This course-based program will cover a wide range of related topics, such as environmental law and management; human health and ecological risk assessment; remediation technology; treatment processes of drinking water and wastewater; contaminant transport and environmental modeling; environmental sampling; and pollution-control engineering. To apply the concepts learned in the classroom and laboratory environments, students will work in teams on an engineering project for two terms. In order to acquire broad-based knowledge in the field, students will be encouraged to take courses from other disciplines in the university.

The Master of Applied Science in Software Engineering (MASc.SE) is a course-based master’s program intended for students with a computer science or computer engineering background who wish to upgrade their background to specialize in software engineering. The MASc.SE is a four-term, course-based master’s program offered jointly by the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science and the Faculty of Science. Graduates of the program will have knowledge and understanding of the core areas and methods in software engineering and will be ready to work in positions of software development, computer systems architecture and design, and distributed services. The program distinguishes itself from existing course options in computer science and computer engineering with its increased focus on software engineering and related topics and a decreased emphasis on other areas, such as hardware, digital design and communications.
