The kinesiology program at Memorial University is one of the most sought after programs in the university. Successful applicants to our program are exposed to a comprehensive four years of study on the art and science of human movement.

As a kinesiology student, you will learn to approach movement from an interdisciplinary perspective enabling you to understand the complex interaction of the physiological, biomechanical, psychological, and sociological principles of human movement. You will understand how and why we move and how we can optimize the human potential for movement and performance.

Philosophy is the study of general and fundamental problems concerning matters such as existence, knowledge, truth, beauty, law, justice, validity, mind and language. Philosophers aim to understand reality, clarify the nature of interactions between individuals and society, and to come to terms with problems of existence and ultimate value.

Memorial’s Department of Philosophy aims to develop students’ intellectual abilities through examining different answers that philosophers have given to fundamental questions in order to develop a critical and systemic approach toward investigating reality and experience that relies on reasoned arguments.

The Master of Applied Science (MASc) in Computer Engineering is a course-based graduate program which prepares its graduates for further post-graduate study or for careers as Computer Engineers in sectors such as telecommunications, information technology, software development, and digital hardware design. The degree will provide participants with a balanced background in computer hardware and software and an in-depth knowledge of important applications areas, such as software development, hardware design, telecommunication systems, computer networks, and parallel computing.

The bachelor of arts degree requires students to complete a minimum of 120 credit hours (normally 40 courses) and generally takes four years to complete. During your studies, you will examine culture, thought, prehistory and history, human interactions and the social and natural forces that constantly transform our society. You will gain the critical-thinking, analytical and communication skills needed to succeed and adapt in a changing world through the study of a major and minor.

The study of history fosters a critical understanding of the past as it relates to our present-day experience. From the depth of recorded history, this program constructs a timeline of human events that teaches us where we came from and illuminates where we are going.

Our department sees history as a foundational discipline within the liberal arts and social science traditions, one that develops key research, writing and analytical skills, but also promotes knowledge and memory of the past as essential to an engaged citizenry.

The ocean and naval architectural engineering program covers two broad areas: ocean engineering includes the design and analysis of equipment and structures that allow people to operate on or underneath the ocean in order to develop and utilize marine resources, while naval architectural engineering is the design and construction of ships and other floating or submersible equipment to serve the needs of the ocean-going community. Ocean and naval architectural engineering requires knowledge of structures, hydrodynamics and marine systems design.

• Memorial’s Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science offers the only co-operative ocean and naval architectural engineering program in the world. The program is rated one of the top programs of its kind in North America. The program prepares graduates to have the knowledge and the skills to apply the principles of fluid and solid mechanics, dynamics, hydrostatics, probability and applied statistics, oceanography, water waves, and marine hydrodynamics to perform the design of ocean systems and ships at the system level, integrating multiple technical areas and addressing design optimization.

The Master of Applied Science in Software Engineering (MASc.SE) is a course-based master’s program intended for students with a computer science or computer engineering background who wish to upgrade their background to specialize in software engineering. The MASc.SE is a four-term, course-based master’s program offered jointly by the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science and the Faculty of Science. Graduates of the program will have knowledge and understanding of the core areas and methods in software engineering and will be ready to work in positions of software development, computer systems architecture and design, and distributed services. The program distinguishes itself from existing course options in computer science and computer engineering with its increased focus on software engineering and related topics and a decreased emphasis on other areas, such as hardware, digital design and communications. 

Civil engineering is a broad field encompassing several distinct areas of specialization. It is also the oldest of the engineering professions. Civil engineers work in all levels of government and for a wide variety of industries involved in the design, planning, managing and construction of highways, airports, harbours, dams, buildings, pollution control and so much more.

The civil engineering program at Memorial is co-operative education-based and offers well-balanced, diversified courses across a wide range of engineering specialties such as structural; construction; geotechnical; water resources; environmental; transportation; and offshore, coastal and ocean.

The bachelor of science in nursing (collaborative) program is designed to prepare entry-level nurses for careers in a variety of health care settings, as direct caregivers, educators, counselors, advocates, facilitators, coordinators of care, researchers, leaders and members of the nursing profession.
