Classics is the study of the ancient Greek and Roman civilizations from which our own modern civilization has developed and which continue to influence and shape our modern world. Students in classics study Greek and Roman societies in all their aspects including language, literature, history, philosophy, science and technology.

Classics is the oldest academic discipline, with its traditions stretching back into antiquity itself. Modern western culture grows from these ancient roots, and knowledge of classical antiquity provides students with a broad cultural vocabulary, which helps you to understand western literature, laws and cultural institutions.

The bachelor of recreation is designed to provide students with the opportunity to develop professional competencies in recreation and leisure service management. The program prepares you to develop, plan and lead recreational activities in a variety of settings. The optional therapeutic recreation stream provides professional preparation for the practice of therapeutic recreation.

Environmental engineering has become an increasingly important discipline due to complexity and multi-disciplinary nature of the environmental issues dealing with human health and ecosystem protection. To find cost-effective engineering solutions to these complex issues, it is important to acquire broad-based education and professional training in inter-disciplinary fields of physical, chemical and biological principles, resource management and mitigation measures besides in-depth knowledge in environmental engineering. This course-based program will cover a wide range of related topics, such as environmental law and management; human health and ecological risk assessment; remediation technology; treatment processes of drinking water and wastewater; contaminant transport and environmental modeling; environmental sampling; and pollution-control engineering. To apply the concepts learned in the classroom and laboratory environments, students will work in teams on an engineering project for two terms. In order to acquire broad-based knowledge in the field, students will be encouraged to take courses from other disciplines in the university.

The ocean and naval architectural engineering program covers two broad areas: ocean engineering includes the design and analysis of equipment and structures that allow people to operate on or underneath the ocean in order to develop and utilize marine resources, while naval architectural engineering is the design and construction of ships and other floating or submersible equipment to serve the needs of the ocean-going community. Ocean and naval architectural engineering requires knowledge of structures, hydrodynamics and marine systems design.

• Memorial’s Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science offers the only co-operative ocean and naval architectural engineering program in the world. The program is rated one of the top programs of its kind in North America. The program prepares graduates to have the knowledge and the skills to apply the principles of fluid and solid mechanics, dynamics, hydrostatics, probability and applied statistics, oceanography, water waves, and marine hydrodynamics to perform the design of ocean systems and ships at the system level, integrating multiple technical areas and addressing design optimization.

Political science is the systematic study of politics. Political scientists consider not only the structure and operations of government, but also public opinion, political parties and elections, and the way in which they interact with governments and shape the polices they make.

Memorial's Department of Political Science has research strengths in public policy, European and international politics, as well as elections, campaigns and voting, particularly in Canada. Students who work towards a B.A. honours or major have the option of concentrating in Canadian government or in global studies. You can also gain job experience in a work internship, pursue a co-op degree, or spend a semester in Europe.

The Department of Political Science offers a Co-Operative Education Option available to political science majors. Admission to the co-op option is competitive for a limited number of places.

The study of English focuses on two activities - reading and writing. In some courses, students may concentrate on writing. In others, the emphasis will be on reading and interpretation. But rarely are reading and writing separated. A degree in English is invaluable training in how language works.

The kinesiology program at Memorial University is one of the most sought after programs in the university. Successful applicants to our program are exposed to a comprehensive four years of study on the art and science of human movement.

As a kinesiology student, you will learn to approach movement from an interdisciplinary perspective enabling you to understand the complex interaction of the physiological, biomechanical, psychological, and sociological principles of human movement. You will understand how and why we move and how we can optimize the human potential for movement and performance.

Anthropology is the study of the origins of human beings and their culture worldwide. In addition to documenting a particular culture, anthropologists are interested in how and why human cultures change. Anthropology students at Memorial University will focus on core concepts, theoretical perspectives and case studies while examining a wide range of issues that exist in the contemporary world.

Our Faculty have addressed a wide range of important topics, including the Northern Ireland Peace Process, the political transformation that took place in Spain after the fall of Franco’s fascist regime, the politics of authenticity in Newfoundland’s fishing and tourism industries, historical memory of the Vietnam war, issues of development in Latin America, and social and political struggles over access to ocean spaces and resources.

The Master of Applied Science (MASc) in Computer Engineering is a course-based graduate program which prepares its graduates for further post-graduate study or for careers as Computer Engineers in sectors such as telecommunications, information technology, software development, and digital hardware design. The degree will provide participants with a balanced background in computer hardware and software and an in-depth knowledge of important applications areas, such as software development, hardware design, telecommunication systems, computer networks, and parallel computing.
