A five-year co-operative degree program composed of eight full-time academic terms and a minimum of four full-time work terms. You will have the opportunity to apply the engineering concepts and theories you learn in the classrooms and laboratories to the real world as you complete work terms that will give you the equivalent of up to two years of real engineering work experience prior to graduation.

Beginning in the second year of the program, you will specialize in one of six available majors:

• Civil engineering
• Computer engineering
• Electrical engineering
• Mechanical engineering
• Ocean and naval architectural engineering
• Process engineering

Students will be introduced to each of the disciplines to aid in selecting their preference prior to Term 3. Focus streams in biomedical engineering are available in the Computer, Electrical and Mechanical programs.

Program Structure

• The common first year of our engineering program is referred to as Engineering One. You will study mathematics, physics, chemistry and engineering fundamentals which are common to each of the majors we offer. Courses in Engineering One will introduce you to engineering problem-solving, analysis, design, communication and teamwork. You will develop an understanding of different engineering fields and how engineering relates to real world issues.
• At the end of the first year, you must apply for your major. In the second year of the program, you begin alternating between academic terms and work terms in the fall, winter and spring semesters.

The study of English focuses on two activities - reading and writing. In some courses, students may concentrate on writing. In others, the emphasis will be on reading and interpretation. But rarely are reading and writing separated. A degree in English is invaluable training in how language works.

The bachelor of arts degree requires students to complete a minimum of 120 credit hours (normally 40 courses) and generally takes four years to complete. During your studies, you will examine culture, thought, prehistory and history, human interactions and the social and natural forces that constantly transform our society. You will gain the critical-thinking, analytical and communication skills needed to succeed and adapt in a changing world through the study of a major and minor.

The Master of Applied Science (MASc) in Computer Engineering is a course-based graduate program which prepares its graduates for further post-graduate study or for careers as Computer Engineers in sectors such as telecommunications, information technology, software development, and digital hardware design. The degree will provide participants with a balanced background in computer hardware and software and an in-depth knowledge of important applications areas, such as software development, hardware design, telecommunication systems, computer networks, and parallel computing.

Police studies is the academic study of the different facets of police institutions and practices through which students understand the legal, political, and social influences shaping policing and its impacts on crime and society.

Police studies at Memorial:-
The major in police studies is intended to promote critical thinking about social issues in a policing environment. This program would be beneficial if you have a scholarly interest in policing, corrections or law enforcement. It has been specifically designed to address the demands of police work, with many courses available through distance learning. The major in police studies does not constitute a qualification in policing.

The kinesiology program at Memorial University is one of the most sought after programs in the university. Successful applicants to our program are exposed to a comprehensive four years of study on the art and science of human movement.

As a kinesiology student, you will learn to approach movement from an interdisciplinary perspective enabling you to understand the complex interaction of the physiological, biomechanical, psychological, and sociological principles of human movement. You will understand how and why we move and how we can optimize the human potential for movement and performance.

The Master of Artificial Intelligence (MAI) is a course-based Master’s program intended for students who wish to gain the skills to integrate and deploy Artificial Intelligence in a variety of sectors.  The Master of Artificial Intelligence (MAI) is a four-term program intended for students with a computer science, computer engineering or scientific computing background who wish to acquire specialization in Artificial Intelligence.

The selection of core courses provides the foundations for AI and an overview of several areas in AI. The electives courses offer students the opportunity to dive deeper into specific areas of AI, such as robotics, machine learning or image processing. The program distinguishes itself from the existing course-based option MSc in Computer Science and MASc in Computer Engineering by an increased focus on artificial intelligence and related topics, and a decreased emphasis on other areas of computer science and computer engineering. Please note that the program has special fees on top of tuition, and that there is no co-op/work-term component and no funding or scholarships.

Electrical engineering is a fast-changing and diverse discipline concerned with the analysis, design, and manufacture of a huge variety of devices, systems, and processes involving electricity. It deals with the transfer of electrical energy and information.

Electrical engineering at Memorial
The electrical engineering program at Memorial includes a mandatory, integrated co-operative education program in which students gain up to two years of practical work experience. You will take courses in hardware, electromagnetics, power systems, electric machines, communications, computer programming and control systems. You will participate in design projects throughout the program, including a team capstone design project in your final year that may span electrical and computer engineering and involve students from both majors.

The bachelor of recreation is designed to provide students with the opportunity to develop professional competencies in recreation and leisure service management. The program prepares you to develop, plan and lead recreational activities in a variety of settings. The optional therapeutic recreation stream provides professional preparation for the practice of therapeutic recreation.

Energy systems engineering is a critical area in need of innovation and highly qualified personnel. The need for readily available and high quality energy is expanding in Newfoundland and Labrador and globally, which has created a worldwide demand for professional training at the graduate level in areas related to the energy industry. The demand for sustainable energy, as well as the environmental concerns of traditional techniques require significant innovation in energy systems engineering.

To develop more sustainable techniques requires research and innovation to achieve energy production and utilization that is financially viable, readily available and environmentally benign. This program is inter-disciplinary. It addresses the complexity and required expertise in several technical disciplines by the industry.
