The study of history fosters a critical understanding of the past as it relates to our present-day experience. From the depth of recorded history, this program constructs a timeline of human events that teaches us where we came from and illuminates where we are going.

Our department sees history as a foundational discipline within the liberal arts and social science traditions, one that develops key research, writing and analytical skills, but also promotes knowledge and memory of the past as essential to an engaged citizenry.

Sociology explores patterns of human social life and examines the development, structuring, and organization of societies in all their historical and current diversity. Sociologists seek to understand how people live, think, feel, and believe in the ongoing processes that maintain and shift society and culture. Through understanding the social forces, structures and relationships that shape our world, sociology allows us to see why and how things are as they are, and how everything could be otherwise. Sociology is therefore central to understanding institutions, organizations, social policy, inequality, privilege, social problems and social change.

The Department of Sociology is the largest in Atlantic Canada, and our faculty regularly engage with communities and social issues right here in Newfoundland and Labrador. Our department has research strengths in the sociology of work, occupational health, immigration, culture, theory, gender, sexuality, technology and society, political sociology, social and economic development, the environment, deviance and criminology.

Linguistics is the scientific study of human language through exploring language structure, language variation, language change, the development of language, as well as through the exploration of the psychology and biology of language. Linguistics evaluates the different facets of language, like childhood acquisition of language, the sounds of language and the ways in which social groups use language.

Memorial has the only linguistics department in Atlantic Canada. Through our data-driven, theoretically informed inquiry into aboriginal languages, we explore variation and change in language and its acquisition. Memorial is host to exceptional in-house data archives, broad library holdings and state-of-the-art labs and analytical tools.

Process engineering is a diversified discipline designed to satisfy the needs of various processing industries including oil and gas and mineral processing. It encompasses new development, design, optimization and operation of sustainable processes for human needs, ensuring safety and protection of the environment. Process engineers process substances through biological, chemical and physical processes to produce useful products such as petrochemicals, gasoline, food, pharmaceuticals, metals and alloys.

• Memorial’s process engineering program is unique in that it is the first of its kind in Canada with a mandatory co-op program, which provides students with opportunities to work in a range of industries from oil production to cheese processing. You will also learn in state-of-the-art laboratories and participate in unique research projects that are changing the future of engineering.
• Our courses and research emphasize environmentally conscious engineering: the importance of development while conserving resources for generations to come. You will study safe, sustainable development and learn about the important role in resource lifecycles.

The Master of Applied Science (MASc) in Computer Engineering is a course-based graduate program which prepares its graduates for further post-graduate study or for careers as Computer Engineers in sectors such as telecommunications, information technology, software development, and digital hardware design. The degree will provide participants with a balanced background in computer hardware and software and an in-depth knowledge of important applications areas, such as software development, hardware design, telecommunication systems, computer networks, and parallel computing.

Religious studies is the scientific exploration of religion. It neither upholds a particular set of religious beliefs, nor seeks to debunk any of them. Rather it strives to understand religion and religious claims. How do different religions understand human existence or the nature and purpose of this world? What ideals for human behaviour do different religions teach? What are the highest goals for the individual and society? We explore the answers given by western religions like Christianity, Islam and Judaism and eastern religions like Buddhism, Confucianism and Hinduism and some of the world’s newer religious movements too.

Memorial is home to the largest religious studies department in Atlantic Canada. The wide range of courses offered includes opportunities for language study in Mandarin, Biblical Hebrew and Sanskrit.

Police studies is the academic study of the different facets of police institutions and practices through which students understand the legal, political, and social influences shaping policing and its impacts on crime and society.

Police studies at Memorial:-
The major in police studies is intended to promote critical thinking about social issues in a policing environment. This program would be beneficial if you have a scholarly interest in policing, corrections or law enforcement. It has been specifically designed to address the demands of police work, with many courses available through distance learning. The major in police studies does not constitute a qualification in policing.

Russian is one of the five official languages of the United Nations and is the native language of 142 million citizens of the Russian Federation.

The Russian major combines learning the Russian language and developing a specialization in various aspects of Russian culture, literature and contemporary issues, relevant to the importance of Russia as a world power in the 21st century. Students can avail of study abroad and internship opportunities in Russia.

Civil engineering is a broad field encompassing several distinct areas of specialization. It is also the oldest of the engineering professions. Civil engineers work in all levels of government and for a wide variety of industries involved in the design, planning, managing and construction of highways, airports, harbours, dams, buildings, pollution control and so much more.

• Memorial’s civil engineering program is unique for students hoping to work in the field of offshore oil and gas development due to the university’s proximity to the ocean. The civil engineering program at Memorial is co-operative education-based and offers well-balanced, diversified courses across a wide range of engineering specialties such as structural; construction; geotechnical; water resources; environmental; transportation; and offshore, coastal and ocean.
