The French language is more than a thousand years old and has created one of Europe's greatest cultures. Much of the world's finest philosophy, cinema, history, science and literature are in French. French is one of Canada's official languages and is indispensable for anyone seeking a national career in any field. Having a second (or third!) language is a huge asset in an increasingly competitive global marketplace.

All students majoring in French are required to participate in an immersion experience. Study abroad opportunities include the Frecker Program in Saint-Pierre-et-Miquelon, the Canadian third-year in Nice, and the Université de Bretagne Sud.
The Frecker program is a total immersion program in St. Pierre-et-Miquelon where students will enrol in five Memorial University French courses and live with a French family. The program is offered every Fall semester and, when resources permit, in Winter semester as well.

Through a combination of course work and two community-based field practica, the bachelor of social work (BSW) programs emphasize social justice through hands-on learning. Students gain experience in assessment, interviewing, counselling, advocacy and community capacity building.

Everything we see around us of human construction, from constitutions to popular culture, is a product of our history. The discipline of history provides an opportunity to develop research and writing skills through the study of fascinating aspects of our past.
The study of history fosters a critical understanding of the past as it relates to our present-day experience. From the depth of recorded history, this program constructs a timeline of human events that teaches us where we came from and illuminates where we are going.

Our department sees history as a foundational discipline within the liberal arts and social science traditions, one that develops key research, writing and analytical skills, but also promotes knowledge and memory of the past as essential to an engaged citizenry.

Civil engineering is a broad field encompassing several distinct areas of specialization. It is also the oldest of the engineering professions. Civil engineers work in all levels of government and for a wide variety of industries involved in the design, planning, managing and construction of highways, airports, harbours, dams, buildings, pollution control and so much more.

• Memorial’s civil engineering program is unique for students hoping to work in the field of offshore oil and gas development due to the university’s proximity to the ocean. The civil engineering program at Memorial is co-operative education-based and offers well-balanced, diversified courses across a wide range of engineering specialties such as structural; construction; geotechnical; water resources; environmental; transportation; and offshore, coastal and ocean.

Russian is one of the five official languages of the United Nations and is the native language of 142 million citizens of the Russian Federation.

The Russian major combines learning the Russian language and developing a specialization in various aspects of Russian culture, literature and contemporary issues, relevant to the importance of Russia as a world power in the 21st century. Students can avail of study abroad and internship opportunities in Russia.

The study of English focuses on two activities - reading and writing. In some courses, students may concentrate on writing. In others, the emphasis will be on reading and interpretation. But rarely are reading and writing separated. A degree in English is invaluable training in how language works.

Philosophy is the study of general and fundamental problems concerning matters such as existence, knowledge, truth, beauty, law, justice, validity, mind and language. Philosophers aim to understand reality, clarify the nature of interactions between individuals and society, and to come to terms with problems of existence and ultimate value.

Memorial’s Department of Philosophy aims to develop students’ intellectual abilities through examining different answers that philosophers have given to fundamental questions in order to develop a critical and systemic approach toward investigating reality and experience that relies on reasoned arguments.

The oil and gas industry is complex and requires expertise in various areas and technical disciplines. To meet this demand, the Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science offers a multidisciplinary program in oil and gas engineering (OGE). This course-based program will provide the latest technical knowledge on upstream, production, and downstream aspects of oil and gas engineering. The program will also address serious issues faced by the oil and gas industries, such as sustainable development, environmental protection, risk, reliability and safety. In addition, the program will cover drilling engineering, phase behavior of petroleum fluid, production engineering, compact process equipment design, offshore environmental operations, and natural gas engineering. Many of the courses taught in the program will be supported by field study and laboratory demonstrations. To apply the concepts learned in the classroom and laboratory environments, students will work in teams on an engineering project for two terms.

Religious studies is the scientific exploration of religion. It neither upholds a particular set of religious beliefs, nor seeks to debunk any of them. Rather it strives to understand religion and religious claims. How do different religions understand human existence or the nature and purpose of this world? What ideals for human behaviour do different religions teach? What are the highest goals for the individual and society? We explore the answers given by western religions like Christianity, Islam and Judaism and eastern religions like Buddhism, Confucianism and Hinduism and some of the world’s newer religious movements too.

Memorial is home to the largest religious studies department in Atlantic Canada. The wide range of courses offered includes opportunities for language study in Mandarin, Biblical Hebrew and Sanskrit.

The Master of Artificial Intelligence (MAI) is a course-based Master’s program intended for students who wish to gain the skills to integrate and deploy Artificial Intelligence in a variety of sectors.  The Master of Artificial Intelligence (MAI) is a four-term program intended for students with a computer science, computer engineering or scientific computing background who wish to acquire specialization in Artificial Intelligence.

The selection of core courses provides the foundations for AI and an overview of several areas in AI. The electives courses offer students the opportunity to dive deeper into specific areas of AI, such as robotics, machine learning or image processing. The program distinguishes itself from the existing course-based option MSc in Computer Science and MASc in Computer Engineering by an increased focus on artificial intelligence and related topics, and a decreased emphasis on other areas of computer science and computer engineering. Please note that the program has special fees on top of tuition, and that there is no co-op/work-term component and no funding or scholarships.
