The UTP Stage II: Science pathway is a student’s first step into realizing their dreams of transforming the world through scientific research, using interactive, theoretical and practical approaches to improving society. In UTP Stage II: Science students choose to focus in one of four different areas: mathematics and data science, experimental science, life science, or general science. These four main areas span eight departments with the opportunity to engage in interdisciplinary studies not only within the Faculty of Science but also across all SFU faculties.

Entry to the second year at SFU

Bachelor of Science
Areas of study:

• Mathematics, Statistics, Applied Math, Actuarial Science Intended*, and Data Science
• Chemistry, Physics, and Earth Sciences
• Biomedical Physiology Intended*, Kinesiology Intended*, Molecular Biology & Biochemistry, and Biological Sciences

*Students in intended pathways will not be admitted directly to the program. Instead, eligible students will be admitted to the Faculty of Science with an intended major and must then apply for approval (i.e. internal transfer) to these programs once at SFU.

UTP Stage II: Health Sciences (BSc) provides first-year courses and the foundation for progression to the second year of SFU's Faculty of Health Sciences. Programs in the Health Sciences combine scientific inquiry with social and behavioural research to examine the underlying causes of health and disease and the factors that influence population health.

Your UTP Stage II Program may include a mandatory non-credit academic literary course.

UTP Stage II: Communication, Art and Technology is equivalent to the first year of SFU's Bachelor of Arts degree. The courses provide introduction to three Schools housed within the Faculty of Communication, Art and Technology, providing the foundation for a Bachelor of Arts degree with a Double Minor specialization.

Students will gain admission to FCAT upon completion of the 10 prescribed courses in the UTP Stage II program with an overall GPA of 2.5 and with a grade of C- or better in all courses. Admission to Contemporary Arts Minors may also require a portfolio, audition or interview. Your UTP Stage II program may include a mandatory non-credit academic literacy course. UTP Stage II: Environment (Environment) provides first-year courses and the foundation for progression to the second year of SFU's Faculty of Environment. With an emphasis on applied and interdisciplinary solutions to complex environmental problems, programs in the Faculty of the Environment provide multiple career options for students in Canada and around the World.

Entry into second year of the Bachelor of Environemnt (BEnv). The Faculty of Environment offer majors in the following areas (and many are also offered as minor options)

• Resource and Environmental Management (BEnv)
• Global Environmental Systems (BEnv)
• Sustainable Business (BEnv, entry through Environment or the Beedie School of Business, however, admission to Beedie is also required for this program)

UTP Stage II: Arts and Social Sciences is equivalent to the first year of SFU's Bachelor of Arts degree. It provides the foundation for further study in many areas such as economics, English, international studies, political science, psychology, linguistics and criminology. UTP Stage II will help you choose the area in which you wish to specialize for your Bachelor of Arts.

You must complete a minimum of 10 academic courses at FIC and have a Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.5 upon completion of your UTP Stage II to be guaranteed transfer to the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree program at SFU. 

UTP Stage II: Computing Science is equivalent to the first year of SFU's Bachelor of Science (Computer Science) degree program. It provides the foundation for further study in many aspects of computing to help you choose your area of specialization for your undergraduate degree.

You must complete a minimum of 10 academic courses at FIC with a program GPA of 2.75  (including a C- or better in all required and specified elective courses within the 10course pathway), and a CGPA of 2.75 or better on all attempted UTP Stage II courses, in order to be guaranteed admission to the School of Computing Science. UTP Stage II: Health Sciences (BA): The interdisciplinary approach of SFU's Health Sciences program encourages a broad exploration of diverse areas of study and will allow students to gain an excellent foundation in a variety of areas and choose the area of study they wish to specialize in when they progress to SFU.

FIC offers a unique pathway to enter the second year of studies at SFU in the Communication and Business Minor programs. UTP Stage II: Communication and Business is equivalent to the first year of SFU’s Bachelor of Arts degree awarded by the Faculty of Communication, Art, and Technology (FCAT). The program will provide you with the necessary foundation to understand and excel in such an exciting program.

UTP Stage II: Environment provides first-year courses and the foundation for progression to the second year of SFU's Faculty of Environment.
