Students at Nipissing explore Biology through enriched lab and field activities—gaining practical experience through hands-on interaction. Those who are most interested in ecological or environmental forms of Biology can amass diverse field experiences through outdoor labs, field trips, Field Camps, and research studies performed in numerous nearby ecosystems. Students who are most interested in laboratory, greenhouse, or health-related Biology, can gain a wealth of skills and experience through exciting cutting-edge activities and research projects performed in our indoor research facilities, using top-of-the-line analytical equipment.

Faculty at Nipissing focus their diverse abilities and experiences on optimizing their teaching and research to enrich student learning. Our professors have studied and published in a wide range of academic topics, won research grants, written textbooks, worked with various industries, advised governments, and have been honoured with teaching awards.

We are a Department of Biology and Chemistry, and although our current emphasis is on Biology, we have established a large number of Chemistry courses to support all aspects of Biology.

Nipissing’s Master of Environmental Sciences (MESc)/Master of Environmental Studies (MES) programs take a unique interdisciplinary approach by integrating ideas and methodologies from the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences to explore and address environmental issues. The programs consist of course work plus a Major Research Paper (one-year program) or coursework plus a Thesis (two-year program), and are offered on a full-time, flex-time or part-time basis. Students gain a broadly-based background in the study of the environment, and develop their own original research project in the context of current and future environmental challenges.

Our core courses are team-taught to provide a range of perspectives. Elective courses in the MESc program focus on topics such as environmental monitoring, forest ecology, watershed hydrology, and air and water pollutant chemistry. Elective courses in the MES program include the environmental history of land and subsistence, global environmental history, histories of environmental thought and watershed management. Our high faculty-to-student ratio provides a collaborative and supportive environment. Graduate students are paired with supervisors from one of several academic departments (Biology and Chemistry; Geography; History) who have a keen interest in and understanding of the field in which students will carry out their research projects. Students also have the opportunity to work alongside these faculty members as teaching assistants in undergraduate courses, and as research assistants. Depending on the research topic, students may also elect to have a co-supervisor, who may be from a different discipline.

Post-baccalaureate diploma will be of interest to students who have a non-business degree, and who want to return to university for one or two years to acquire a specialty in a functional area of business in order to enhance their employment opportunities. Students with a first degree in business, but who want to change their area of focus, may complete a post-baccalaureate diploma as well.

Post-baccalaureate diplomas are also valuable to international students who wish to come to Canada to learn English, gain exposure to the culture, and study in a compressed format. Many who do so have already studied business in their own country and have received transfer credit that reduces the length of the program.

In the two-year in-depth Finance Post-Baccalaureate Diploma program, you’ll acquire financial literacy, a strong foundation in investment analysis and portfolio management, and an understanding of business and financial law. Once you graduate, you’ll be prepared to take on roles such as financial planner, and financial or investment analyst.

In order to graduate with the Post-Baccalaureate Diploma in Finance, students must obtain a minimum overall average of 60% on all courses presented for the diploma.  A minimum of 30 credits must be taken with Nipissing University to satisfy residency requirements.

Over the course of the two-year Bachelor of Education degree program, you will gain practical, hands-on experience through 20 weeks of practicum in a variety of Ontario classrooms. Whether you choose the primary/junior, junior/intermediate or intermediate/senior division, we will ensure that we provide you with placements that fulfill the requirements of your program and the requirements of the Ontario College of Teachers.

In your second year, use the knowledge and skills you’ve acquired, in a 60-hour community leadership experience. You may choose to participate in an international or domestic practicum arranged by Nipissing University or focus your interests closer to home within Ontario. Previous international and domestic locations have included Costa Rica, Kenya, France, and Trois Pistoles, Quebec. Experiences within Ontario have included placements in organizations such as museums, outdoor education centres, and correction centres. Whether teaching internationally or working with a local organization, you will get to explore the teaching and learning opportunities that exist outside of traditional classrooms.

The Computer Science program provides a strong foundation in computer science theory and in its practical applications including neural networks, artificial intelligence, robotics, graphics, computer security, software engineering, and game design. You may choose to pursue a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Computer Science, or a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Computer Science, based on your preference and the courses you choose. This will allow you to tailor your degree to be more applied or theoretical by selecting courses that align with your interests, and you will be supported by faculty who are genuinely interested in providing you with the skills to make your dreams a reality. You also have the option of simultaneously attaining a Certificate in Game Design and Development.

The Master of Education (MEd) program is designed to prepare educational leaders for learning environments such as classrooms, schools and other learning organizations. The program is ideal for education, healthcare and other professionals.

The program is offered on a full-time and flexible full-time (Flex-time) basis. The Flex-time option is intended to allow working professionals to be engaged in continued employment in areas related to the fields of research. The majority of courses are offered online, however students may have the opportunity to register in selected onsite courses at the Nipissing University North Bay campus. The full-time MEd Program is a two-year program. Students in the Flex-time option may complete within 3-4 years.?

The primary way human beings communicate is through storytelling. Almost every interaction we have involves exchanging and analyzing stories, ideas, impressions and emotions. Given this fact of human culture, we see English Studies as teaching essential skills for life beyond the university.

In English, we challenge simplistic or superficial modes of thought—or non-thought—by finding out how texts of all sorts work. We learn from the past by reading classic works of literature, such as novels, plays and poetry. We also engage with contemporary culture by considering the texts that shape our current lives, such as movies, television, web-culture, graphic novels, theatre, and other media forms. With analytical reading, research and writing practice, we equip the citizens of the future with the skills of discernment, focus, resilience and adaptability that they will need to build their own careers and communities.

Delivered with an emphasis on dialogue, our courses reflect faculty research interests and the shape of our discipline by being a mix of tradition and innovation. In first year, you can choose from among a number of topics courses. In upper years, you may take courses in British literary history, such as Shakespeare or Victorian literature, as well as choosing from a broader range of subjects such as children’s literature, Canadian and American literature, the graphic novel, postcolonial and indigenous literatures, Harry Potter, fan vids or disaster films.​​​​​

The Liberal Arts program provides maximum flexibility to study a range of disciplines. It emphasizes breadth rather than specialization so you can develop a program that is based on your specific interests and goals. The majority of courses taken in this degree will be in the Humanities and Social Sciences, although you can take courses in Business and Science as well.

Students in Nipissing’s Liberal Arts program enjoy the flexibility of being able to design their own degree. Liberal Arts emphasizes breadth rather than specialization and allows individuals to develop a program that is suited to their personal interests and goals.

This degree program examines political topics that range from the foundations of international relations and foreign policy to Canadian politics.

The Political Science Program at Nipissing University offers courses of study in Political Theory, Canadian Politics, Comparative Politics, International Relations, and Public Administration.

If politics is a form of association directed towards what a community holds to be good - their common purpose - then political science is the reflective study on those various purposes as well as of the means or methods chosen to achieve them.

Our Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) program is offered through an educational partnership with Canadore College. Classes are learner-centred, and are taught by skilled faculty from both schools.

The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BScN) program offers students a distinctive, collaborative education through its educational partnership with Canadore College. Classes take place in a student-centred learning environment with faculty from both institutions. Courses are taken at Nipissing University and Canadore College, both conveniently located on the same campus. Clinical experiences are provided at the new North Bay Regional Health Centre (NBRHC), as well as agencies throughout the city, depending on the focus of the practicum. The NBRHC is located within comfortable walking distance of Nipissings main campus and residence complexes, and offers a convenient, accessible and state-of-the-art facility where you will gain valuable practical experience beginning in your first year.??
