The Master of Arts (MA) in Sociology – Applied Social Research degree will focus on the application of social theories and research methodologies that assist in understanding and addressing the social problems and challenges of northern and rural communities, including Indigenous communities, in Canada and around the world. The program brings together faculty expertise in Sociology, Health and Populations Studies, Gerontology, Anthropology, Science and Environmental Studies, and Criminology and Criminal Justice. Active involvement in the community, government agency partners, a curriculum of research-intensive courses, and practicum placements will provide you with the theoretical foundations and quantitative and qualitative research skills to undertake applied research, evaluation and policy studies in government, not-for-profit and private organizations. There are three required courses that are the foundation of the degree and include: SOCI 5106 Advanced Sociological Theory; SOCI 5216 Research Design; and either SOCI 5217 Quantitative Analysis or SOCI 5417 Qualitative Analysis. You will be well prepared for more advanced studies in Sociology, Anthropology and Criminology at the doctoral level.

Previous international and domestic locations have included Costa Rica, Kenya, France, and Trois Pistoles, Quebec. Experiences within Ontario have included placements in organizations such as museums, outdoor education centres, and correction centres. Whether teaching internationally or working with a local organization, you will get to explore the teaching and learning opportunities that exist outside of traditional classrooms.

Native Studies offers you an opportunity to learn about Native cultures, philosophies, literature, histories, and contemporary issues that are central to this land that we live in. Its multidisciplinary approach reflects the different directions of the Medicine Wheel, so your studies will include the physical, intellectual, emotional, and spiritual aspects that are needed for true learning according to indigenous thought.

Built upon traditional First Nations land and with a number of First Nations communities in the area, North Bay and Nipissing University are significant centres of aboriginal nfluence and activity. It would be challenging to find a more appropriate or ideal place than Nipissing to study and engage with a diversity of native cultures, communities, and organizations.

Our program welcomes both Native and non-Native students in an inclusive, side-by-side learning environment. The Psychology Department offers a full slate of courses that cover all major areas of the discipline.

Students can choose between the Bachelor of Arts (BA) or Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree programs when they study Psychology at Nipissing University. The main difference between the two degree options is in the electives you choose. BA students will take humanities and social science elective courses (e.g., English, Philosophy, Criminal Justice, Sociology, and History), while BSc students will take electives from the sciences (e.g., Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, and Physics). The BSc program offers the possibility of adding a Certificate in Neuroscience when certain courses are combined with an Honours thesis in a Neuroscience area. The BA program offers a Certificate in Early Intensive Behaviour Intervention – Autism Spectrum Disorder.

At Nipissing you have the option to focus on one of our four streams: Policing, Corrections, Criminology or Criminal Justice Studies. Our flexible program is designed to give you a balanced combination of theory and practice. Through field placements, projects, and research, you will have opportunities to work alongside real criminal justice professionals.

In the Criminal Justice Studies stream, you will take a wide variety of courses that will give you broad knowledge of the Criminal Justice system. You will also take courses in Sociology and Psychology, and you will learn how they relate to the field of Criminal Justice.

Students at Nipissing explore Biology through enriched lab and field activities—gaining practical experience through hands-on interaction. Those who are most interested in ecological or environmental forms of Biology can amass diverse field experiences through outdoor labs, field trips, Field Camps, and research studies performed in numerous nearby ecosystems. Students who are most interested in laboratory, greenhouse, or health-related Biology, can gain a wealth of skills and experience through exciting cutting-edge activities and research projects performed in our indoor research facilities, using top-of-the-line analytical equipment.

Faculty at Nipissing focus their diverse abilities and experiences on optimizing their teaching and research to enrich student learning. We are a Department of Biology and Chemistry, and although our current emphasis is on Biology, we have established a large number of Chemistry courses to support all aspects of Biology.

The Liberal Science program is general in nature and will expose you to a range of scientific disciplines, and provide a broad-based understanding of science. You will study the basic concepts and approaches of modern science and consider its role in society today.

Post-baccalaureate diploma will be of interest to students who have a non-business degree, and who want to return to university for one or two years to acquire a specialty in a functional area of business in order to enhance their employment opportunities. Students with a first degree in business, but who want to change their area of focus, may complete a post-baccalaureate diploma as well.

Post-baccalaureate diplomas are also valuable to international students who wish to come to Canada to learn English, gain exposure to the culture, and study in a compressed format. Many who do so have already studied business in their own country and have received transfer credit that reduces the length of the program.
 
Post-Baccalaureate Diploma in International Business Management will help you get there. Specifically, you’ll learn about importing and exporting, market research to develop market entry strategies, supply chain management, managing in international environments, legal and financial aspects of international trade business.

In order to graduate with the Post-Baccalaureate Diploma in International Business, students must obtain a minimum overall average of 60% on all courses presented for the diploma.  A minimum of 30 credits must be taken with Nipissing University to satisfy residency requirements.
