Mechanical Technician – Welding Fitter’s diagnose, install and maintain plant machinery in a systematic manner with a high degree of efficiency. A Welding Fitter will fabricate, and weld various parts and structural steel as required, and install, repair, and fabricate cones, chutes, hoppers and other shapes.

The Mechanical Technician – Welding Fitter program provides students with training equivalent to the advanced level of the in-school component of a welding apprenticeship. In addition, the student increases his/her skills in communications, computers, computer-aided drafting, and gains hands-on welding fitter training.

This program provides graduates with the background in science and technology related to welding that will prepare them to interact with engineers and scientists while maintaining the practical skills necessary to supervise trade personnel. Welding professionals are concerned with all activities related to the design, production, performance and maintenance of welded products. To adequately design a weldment, the welding professional must not only understand the material being joined, but also the effect of welding variables of many welding processes on the final product. To achieve this, lab time is intertwined with a curriculum of metallurgical science and engineering theory. In developing the skills required in becoming a welding inspector, students complement their knowledge of non-destructive examination with a working knowledge of codes, standards and stress analysis.

Practical Nursing is a five level (63 week) program leading to an Ontario college diploma in Practical Nursing. Northern College’s Practical Nursing program has received a CATEGORY 1 PROGRAM APPROVAL from the College of Nurses of Ontario.Northern College is a member of the Northern Partners in Practical Nursing Education (NPPNE). As one of the seven colleges in the consortium, Northern College delivers the current diploma program standards that meet the requirements of the national PN registration examination. Note: Revisions may be made to the program format and curriculum as a result of the College’s collaboration within the Northern Partners in Practical Nursing Education (NPPNE).

Northern’s Practical Nursing program holds as its philosophy a set of beliefs and values based on five key concepts: the client, health, caring, nursing, and the role that teaching and learning play in enabling individuals and their families and groups to achieve health outcomes. These concepts are derived from the scope of practice described in the Nursing Act 1991 and are interrelated, interdependent and integrated throughout the curriculum. Registered Practical Nurses work with individuals, families and groups (autonomously or in consultation with nursing and other team members) to plan, implement, and evaluate outcomes-based nursing care, services and programs that promote health and rehabilitation, prevent injury and disease, maintain and restore health, and provide palliation.

Social Service Workers focus on promoting equality, and addressing disadvantages that people face on the basis of race, disability, gender or age. They use their knowledge of human behaviour and development, communication, interviewing and counseling skills, to work with groups and/or communities to help them become more caring and capable of supporting their communities.

This program prepares students to work with people who are experiencing stressful events in their lives from an individual, family and community perspective. Students will learn how to intervene in crisis situations and will develop skills needed to assist individual clients, groups, families and communities to better meet their challenges and to enhance their social functioning. Clinical practice labs and field placements provide a milieu where students are able to apply theory into practice through interviewing, case assessment and planning. Students must be able to apply skills, such as teamwork and group work outside of class. They may also be required to seek feedback from agency professionals for lab work and video assignments. The Pre-Health Sciences Pathway to Advanced Diplomas and Degrees program prepares graduates for success in professional health career programs. This program provides an admissions pathway into the Bachelor of Science – Nursing, Practical Nursing, and Paramedic programs at Northern College. It also provides admission requirements for most health career programs offered at other Ontario community colleges and is a partner in several university articulation agreements.

The technician is part of the engineering team, involved in all aspects of mining from exploration, planning, development and operation, to mineral extraction and environmental control. This program is offered in a modular distance – education format that allows you to take courses from the comfort of your home, avoid long commutes, minimize accommodation and living costs while studying, maintain your employment, as well as develop sound communication and computer skills. Distance theory education is coupled with yearly field school components which are held at the Haileybury campus during the spring

In the business world, solid accounting skills combined with marketing strategy and creativity are in high demand.  The wide variety of courses offered within this program will yield a well rounded Business Graduate.

This program will provide rigorous academic and hands-on training in anatomy, physiology, massage theory, entrepreneurial/business management and clinical skills, enabling the graduate to be eligible to write the registration examination set by the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario

Our Police Foundations Program is geared to provide an exciting learning experience for all our students. Academic studies combined with hands on realistic training gives our students the skills and knowledge they will need in furthering their goals of obtaining a career in law enforcement. Due to our smaller class sizes the students have the access to instructors and learning material that helps them to be successful in their studies.

Our instructors are serving and retired officers from Timmins Police and the Ontario Provincial Police. Northern College has a great partnership with both the Timmins Police Service and the O.P.P as well as the Monteith Correctional center.

Students will have the opportunity to volunteer with the O.P.P. in their block training during winter semesters. This is a chance to see firsthand officer training and gain networking accessibility.

In the fall of 2018 our new Integrated Emergency Services building was open. Along with state of the art class rooms we have a jail cell, cruiser bay, interview room, fingerprint and mugshot room, as well as a full size court room. Our facility also has a training lab along with a full training apartment to run scenarios. Outside is a training intersection for scenario use by all our emergency services program.
