Business Fundamentals is a common first year business program for Northern College’s two-year business programs in Accounting, Human Resources, Marketing, Business General studies, and Global Business, Entrepreneurship, and Technology. This program offers intakes in September and January. Students starting in January take two semesters of study ending in early July, and then continue with second year studies in the fall.

This program will teach you how to carry out maintenance mechanic functions within an industrial setting, applying your knowledge of diagnosis, repair, maintenance and installation of industrial equipment to support the industrial environment. This program provide a basis for you to:

• Develop desirable work attitudes and a keen sense of responsibility, particularly with regard to personal safety
• Acquire sound theoretical training to meet the challenges of today’s increasingly complex work environments
• Reinforce fundamental skills of the trade through exposure to practical applications
• Develop high standards of craftsmanship, problem solving skills and personal pride in your trade

This program is a flexible program that provides students with access to a wide variety of post secondary options. While exploring different areas of study such as community services, business, health sciences, and technology and working toward a college certificate or diploma, students earn credits that may be transferred to other college programs or university. The program focuses on developing enhanced skills in communication, critical thinking and computer literacy to build a solid foundation for future studies and career success. This program offers students the opportunity to:

• Design a program of study that upgrades their qualifications for other university and college programs.
• Obtain a general post-secondary education before deciding on a career path.
• Personalize a program of study based on their goals and interests.
• Earn credits that can be transferred to a variety of program areas at college or university.
• Attend college even if they have been unable to gain entry into the program of their choice due to limited enrolment.

Program Outcomes
Upon completion of this program, you will be able to:

• Develop a general knowledge of a variety of subjects that will contribute to developing insights into self and society
• Function successfully in a post-secondary educational environment
• Transfer the credits gained in approved courses towards a baccalaureate (B.A./B.Sc) at selected universities or to other college programs.

The Business – Human Resources program will prepare students to participate in staffing, performance management, training, employee relations, health and safety, and benefits and compensation administration functions. Students will develop skills in communication, information technology, and teamwork, and will learn organizational development strategies to support the human resources activities of an organization.

The Pre-Health Sciences Pathway to Advanced Diplomas and Degrees program prepares graduates for success in professional health career programs. This program provides an admissions pathway into the Bachelor of Science – Nursing, Practical Nursing, and Paramedic programs at Northern College. It also provides admission requirements for most health career programs offered at other Ontario community colleges and is a partner in several university articulation agreements.

The Medical Laboratory Technician program provides students with the knowledge and skills to enable them to work in a medical laboratory. Students will receive education and training in specimen collection and processing, the administration of ECG’s, set up of Holter monitors, and the use of laboratory equipment while developing the professional attitude and demeanor needed for close patient contact. Students will have the opportunity to perform a variety of lab functions both within the simulated on site medical laboratory and during clinical practicums within both community and hospital laboratories. Upon successful completion of all courses outlined in the program of study, students are eligible to write the Examination for Medical Laboratory Assistant/Technician with the OSMT.

The acceleration of technology will continue to transform how organizations operate and how individuals in the economy interact to create value. The skill set needed by business professionals in the age of digital transformation is the focus of the two-year Diploma program on Global Business, Entrepreneurship and Technology (GBET). Knowledge and skills from these three specialty areas will enable graduates to assume key roles in business management and new venture creations. The first year of the two-year diploma program begins with the Business Fundamentals certificate courses, which form the common core of all Northern College’s Business programs. In the second year of the program students will begin their specialty studies in the programs three specialty areas. Student having completed the business fundamentals program may complete the second year of the GBET program to earn their diploma.

The first two years of the Electrical Engineering Technician program is identical to that of this program. Students who want to specialize in electrical technology continue studies an additional year to receive a greater depth of training and knowledge in Protection and Control, Control Systems, Electrical Design, Power Utility Systems and Programmable Logic Controls.
Students receive extensive hands-on instruction in several state-of-the-art laboratories. They learn how to select, design, install, maintain, program and troubleshoot modern industrial, electrical and electronic systems. Graduates from our Technician or Technology programs may obtain certification through the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT).

Pathways to Success
Graduates of the Electrical Engineering Technician Program may choose to continue their studies and complete an additional year in order to obtain a diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology. Graduates of this program may be eligible to enroll in the Electrical Engineering degree program at Lakehead University. The Pre-Service Firefighter Education and Training Program will prepare students for a career in fire-fighting, and features an on-campus live burn training facility to provide hands on practice for students in essential fire-fighting skills. This program provides applicants with the required knowledge and skills through vocational courses in fire fighting, generic skills and general education courses in order to enhance job performance as a firefighter. Students have the opportunity to consolidate and apply theoretical knowledge through lab and field placements within regional Fire Services. The three semesters of this program are offered consecutively. A dress code is in effect for all lab practice sessions and field placement activities. Students are required to purchase the student fire uniforms, crests, as well as basic personal fire boots and clothing items. Cost of additional supplies with required program textbooks is approximately $1,500.00. Fire turn-out gear will be provided by the College.

Business students who decide to continue their studies in the three-year Business Administration Diploma program, can choose a combination of courses to suit their interests and needs. They will be able to select courses from the other Business program options offered – Accounting, Marketing, Community Economic and Social Development or Human Resource Management. In the business world, solid accounting skills combined with marketing strategy and creativity are in high demand. By selecting a combination of electives from the marketing and accounting areas, students can actually customize a business program to fit their interests and strengths.
