Our Police Foundations Program is geared to provide an exciting learning experience for all our students. Academic studies combined with hands on realistic training gives our students the skills and knowledge they will need in furthering their goals of obtaining a career in law enforcement. Due to our smaller class sizes the students have the access to instructors and learning material that helps them to be successful in their studies.

Our instructors are serving and retired officers from Timmins Police and the Ontario Provincial Police. Northern College has a great partnership with both the Timmins Police Service and the O.P.P as well as the Monteith Correctional center.

Students will have the opportunity to volunteer with the O.P.P. in their block training during winter semesters. This is a chance to see firsthand officer training and gain networking accessibility.

In the fall of 2018 our new Integrated Emergency Services building was open. Along with state of the art class rooms we have a jail cell, cruiser bay, interview room, fingerprint and mugshot room, as well as a full size court room. Our facility also has a training lab along with a full training apartment to run scenarios. Outside is a training intersection for scenario use by all our emergency services program.

By connecting businesses and consumers into a single global market, the Internet has become a powerful marketing tool. Northern’s Business – Marketing program is angled towards E-commerce and is designed to equip students with an array of high-tech marketing skills. They will learn how to sell ideas and services in the web environment, use web resources, prospect and generate sales through the Internet, develop Internet marketing plans and apply a wide variety of Internet marketing tools. The first year of this program will provide students with a solid and essential foundation in business. In the second year, they will be immersed in the world of marketing and E-commerce. A number of Northern’s Business courses are recognized by professional organizations for certification and professional designations:

Construction has become an industry of skill and precision. The construction industry needs people who can handle everything from estimating to sales, and who know how everything in the building process fits together. Northern’s two-year program is designed to help students enter the construction and building management industry with a knowledge of construction law and management. Students will practice the skills required by today’s construction industry. They will learn computerized drawing and detailing, surveying, methods and materials, specification writing, building code, residential and commercial estimating, engineering materials testing and mechanical installation. Overall, this unique mixture of architectural, civil, structural and mechanical knowledge and skills will give students an insight into the technical requirements of building construction and maintenance.

In the business world, solid accounting skills combined with marketing strategy and creativity are in high demand.  The wide variety of courses offered within this program will yield a well-rounded Business Graduate.               

Nursing is a profession that provides opportunities for specialization, team work, leadership and personal growth. Nursing promotes partnerships with other health care professionals in caring for clients and families across the lifespan through a variety of health care settings. Northern College is one of the partners in the Laurentian University BScN Collaborative Program and, as part of this partnership with Laurentian University, our nursing students are able to complete all four years of the BScN program at Northern.

Northern College’s nursing program provides opportunities for students to practice nursing skills in state of the art nursing practice labs equipped with integrative simulation equipment. This latest technology will assist in preparing students for actual client care through simulated medical scenarios. Our nursing program also incorporates new technologies, such as specialized software packages and web-based tools, many of which are used in health-care settings. Learning experiences will be enhanced through cooperation and consultation with faculty and peers through shared activities. Northern also utilizes its on-site Family Health Team clinic, to provide an excellent opportunity for nursing students to experience community-based nursing first hand while working within an interdisciplinary health care team.

Supply Chain Management is a two-year Ontario College Graduate Certificate program (completed in four semesters). It is designed for individuals looking at a career or who are currently employed in the area of supply chain and logistics management. Students will learn to research and analyze the marketplace; develop demand forecasts; evaluate suppliers’ capabilities to deliver; utilize logistics technology tools and resources to assist in decision making; develop aggregate and master production plans/ schedules; and analyze business processes.

Industry-standard theories, methods, and techniques (Six Sigma, Total Quality Management, Just-in-Time, Lean Theory of Constraints) and how they apply to supply chain management strategies and problem solving will also be covered. Graduates of this program will have applied knowledge in the field of supply chain management within a global economy, from planning, sourcing, producing and delivering the product or service. This program will provide students with valuable and relevant work experience, transferable skills sought by employers, and an opportunity to explore career interests before graduation. Through the Work placement experience, students will enhance the understanding of Supply Chain and Logistics learned in class and practice the business skills in the real-world.

This program will teach you how to carry out maintenance mechanic functions within an industrial setting, applying your knowledge of diagnosis, repair, maintenance and installation of industrial equipment to support the industrial environment. This program provide a basis for you to:

• Develop desirable work attitudes and a keen sense of responsibility, particularly with regard to personal safety
• Acquire sound theoretical training to meet the challenges of today’s increasingly complex work environments
• Reinforce fundamental skills of the trade through exposure to practical applications
• Develop high standards of craftsmanship, problem solving skills and personal pride in your trade

The Addiction and Mental Health Worker program provides students with evidence-based knowledge and skills in screening, assessing and responding to people with mental health, substance use and other addictions from diverse cultural and community perspectives.

Graduates will be prepared to analyze multiple and intersecting causes and impacts of addiction and mental health issues from a multidimensional framework that integrates an Anti-Oppressive Practice (AOP) lens, inclusive of Indigenous and traditional approaches to healing. The focus of this approach will prepare students to work with individuals and family members experiencing addiction and mental health issues and challenges, as well as to intervene in an advocacy role at organizational and systems levels to promote equitable access to supports and services, including health promotion and prevention/harm reduction.

The field placement component of this program provides students with the opportunity to work in inter-professional teams to gain direct practice experience providing support to clients and families/kin through case management, assessment and referral and navigating systems of care.

Mechanical Engineering Technicians provide technical support and services including design, development, testing, manufacture, and maintenance of machines, tools, engines, heating and ventilating systems, piping, and electronic equipment. Students will learn to make sketches, layouts, 2D drawings, 3D models, record and analyze engineering data, make calculations & estimates and report their findings.
