This program will teach you how to carry out maintenance mechanic functions within an industrial setting, applying your knowledge of diagnosis, repair, maintenance and installation of industrial equipment to support the industrial environment. This program provide a basis for you to:

Designed for those interested in gaining entrance to and/or a competitive advantage in the mineral exploration job market. This program provides students with the entry-level knowledge and skills to function as a valuable member of a mineral exploration team on projects in grassroots exploration to mine-site exploration. The two-semester program incorporates both classroom teaching and valuable hands-on experience during a culminating two-week field school. The modular format and distance or in-class delivery of this program provides the flexibility for students to study while maintaining their employment and caters to students in remote northern communities. Graduates are ready to enter the job market with a college certificate after only one year of study.

This program will prepare you to apply your knowledge in analyzing and solving heavy duty equipment system problems. You will learn how to diagnose and repair mechanical, electronic and electrical heavy duty equipment components and systems using a variety of troubleshooting techniques and testing equipment to support heavy equipment operations. Co-op Diploma Apprenticeship programs provide a basis for you to:

Early Childhood Educators (ECE’s) are professionals who are part of a multidisciplinary team that may include behavioural therapists, speech pathologists, consultants, parents and school representatives. They assist children to make a successful transition to, and integration into the school system. In addition to working with infants and children up to 12 years old, Early Childhood Educators will also be part of a team and expected to work in a professional and competent manner with staff, parents, and community members. Graduates require good communication, critical thinking and problem solving skills, as well as sound judgment.

Besides planning and conducting the regular routines of the day, students will have the opportunity to observe children to determine their present skill level in each developmental area. Students will research, plan, carry out and evaluate a full range of program and curriculum activities designed to help each child reach his/her full developmental potential. A distinct feature of the program is the opportunity it offers students to gain practical work experience in a variety of settings: day care centres, nursery schools, parent resource centres, toy-lending libraries, junior and senior kindergartens, and before- and after-school programs throughout the community.

Children’s Play Lab
The Children’s Play Lab provides students with the opportunity to design, setup, monitor and make improvements to an early years learning environment. Partnerships with local early learning centres will provide our students with the unique opportunity to work closely with young children in a controlled environment.

This program is a flexible program that provides students with access to a wide variety of post-secondary options. While exploring different areas of study such as community services, business, health sciences, and technology and working toward a college certificate or diploma, students earn credits that may be transferred to other college programs or university. The program focuses on developing enhanced skills in communication, critical thinking and computer literacy to build a solid foundation for future studies and career success. This program offers students the opportunity to:

• Design a program of study that upgrades their qualifications for other university and college programs.
• Obtain a general post-secondary education before deciding on a career path.
• Personalize a program of study based on their goals and interests.
• Earn credits that can be transferred to a variety of program areas at college or university.
• Attend college even if they have been unable to gain entry into the program of their choice due to limited enrolment.

Program Outcomes

Mechanical Engineering Technicians provide technical support and services including design, development, testing, manufacture, and maintenance of machines, tools, engines, heating and ventilating systems, piping, and electronic equipment. Students will learn to make sketches, layouts, 2D drawings, 3D models, record and analyze engineering data, make calculations & estimates and report their findings.

Social Service Workers focus on promoting equality, and addressing disadvantages that people face on the basis of race, disability, gender or age. They use their knowledge of human behaviour and development, communication, interviewing and counseling skills, to work with groups and/or communities to help them become more caring and capable of supporting their communities.

This program prepares students to work with people who are experiencing stressful events in their lives from an individual, family and community perspective. Students will learn how to intervene in crisis situations and will develop skills needed to assist individual clients, groups, families and communities to better meet their challenges and to enhance their social functioning. Clinical practice labs and field placements provide a milieu where students are able to apply theory into practice through interviewing, case assessment and planning. Students must be able to apply skills, such as teamwork and group work outside of class. They may also be required to seek feedback from agency professionals for lab work and video assignments. Northern College values lifelong learning in an effort to maintain the current competencies outlined by the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers. This four-semester program provides the skills and knowledge needed to deliver emergency care in the pre-hospital setting. Classroom components emphasizing biological science, humanities and ambulance services provide the theoretical basis for the interventions required to deal with medical or trauma emergencies. Emphasis is placed on the ability to communicate well with patients, families and health care professionals and to function effectively as part of an interdisciplinary health care team. Clinical labs and field placements provide a milieu where students are able to apply theory into practice through assessment and the provision of a primary level of care.

This one year graduate certificate will provide a comprehensive overview and working knowledge of the many facets of Emergency Management (Prevention, Mitigation, Response and Recovery), as well as the ever evolving world of Intelligence, Terrorism, Cybersecurity and Pandemic Planning. Graduates will be well prepared to take on leadership roles in municipal, provincial and federal response planning and coordination. Legislative frameworks, risk assessment and crisis communications curriculum will be complemented by unique courses in terrorism, pandemic/mass casualty planning, and cybersecurity.
