Nursing is a profession that provides opportunities for specialization, team work, leadership and personal growth. Nursing promotes partnerships with other health care professionals in caring for clients and families across the lifespan through a variety of health care settings. Northern College is one of the partners in the Laurentian University BScN Collaborative Program and, as part of this partnership with Laurentian University, our nursing students are able to complete all four years of the BScN program at Northern.

Northern College’s nursing program provides opportunities for students to practice nursing skills in state of the art nursing practice labs equipped with integrative simulation equipment. This latest technology will assist in preparing students for actual client care through simulated medical scenarios. Our nursing program also incorporates new technologies, such as specialized software packages and web-based tools, many of which are used in health-care settings. Learning experiences will be enhanced through cooperation and consultation with faculty and peers through shared activities. Northern also utilizes its on-site Family Health Team clinic, to provide an excellent opportunity for nursing students to experience community-based nursing first hand while working within an interdisciplinary health care team.

Diploma in Addiction and Mental Health Worker

The Addiction and Mental Health Worker program provides students with evidence-based knowledge and skills in screening, assessing and responding to people with mental health, substance use and other addictions from diverse cultural and community perspectives.

Graduates will be prepared to analyze multiple and intersecting causes and impacts of addiction and mental health issues from a multidimensional framework that integrates an Anti-Oppressive Practice (AOP) lens, inclusive of Indigenous and traditional approaches to healing. The focus of this approach will prepare students to work with individuals and family members experiencing addiction and mental health issues and challenges, as well as to intervene in an advocacy role at organizational and systems levels to promote equitable access to supports and services, including health promotion and prevention/harm reduction.

The field placement component of this program provides students with the opportunity to work in inter-professional teams to gain direct practice experience providing support to clients and families/kin through case management, assessment and referral and navigating systems of care.

Graduate Certificate in Health Care Management

The Healthcare Management Program is designed for both domestic and international students with experience in the health care field who are seeking to enhance their existing post-secondary credentials and looking to transition into management roles in emerging healthcare environments, within the Ontario and Canadian healthcare context. Comprehension of patient needs, socio-cultural factors, behaviors and health services information are key focus areas of this program and will enable students to develop new skills in the areas of leadership, human resources management, conflict resolution, and strategic thinking.

Mechanical Engineering Technicians provide technical support and services including design, development, testing, manufacture, and maintenance of machines, tools, engines, heating and ventilating systems, piping, and electronic equipment. Students will learn to make sketches, layouts, 2D drawings, 3D models, record and analyze engineering data, make calculations & estimates and report their findings.

The first two years of the Electrical Engineering Technician program is identical to that of this program. Students who want to specialize in electrical technology continue studies an additional year to receive a greater depth of training and knowledge in Protection and Control, Control Systems, Electrical Design, Power Utility Systems and Programmable Logic Controls.
Students receive extensive hands-on instruction in several state-of-the-art laboratories. They learn how to select, design, install, maintain, program and troubleshoot modern industrial, electrical and electronic systems. Graduates from our Technician or Technology programs may obtain certification through the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT).

Pathways to Success
Graduates of the Electrical Engineering Technician Program may choose to continue their studies and complete an additional year in order to obtain a diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology. Graduates of this program may be eligible to enroll in the Electrical Engineering degree program at Lakehead University.
