The first two years of the Electrical Engineering Technician program is identical to that of this program. Students who want to specialize in electrical technology continue studies an additional year to receive a greater depth of training and knowledge in Protection and Control, Control Systems, Electrical Design, Power Utility Systems and Programmable Logic Controls.
Students receive extensive hands-on instruction in several state-of-the-art laboratories. They learn how to select, design, install, maintain, program and troubleshoot modern industrial, electrical and electronic systems. Graduates from our Technician or Technology programs may obtain certification through the Ontario Association of Certified Engineering Technicians and Technologists (OACETT).

Pathways to Success
Graduates of the Electrical Engineering Technician Program may choose to continue their studies and complete an additional year in order to obtain a diploma in Electrical Engineering Technology. Graduates of this program may be eligible to enroll in the Electrical Engineering degree program at Lakehead University. Students studying Computer Science will gain a strong theoretical and practical foundation in the study of algorithms, programming languages, hardware architecture, systems software, application software, and tools. They will also develop a solid foundation in data structure, programming, assembly language programming, computer organization, operating systems, theory, software engineering, and computer networking. Students also have the opportunity to explore their individual interests and take courses in artificial intelligence, human-computer interactions, and web data management, among others!

Above all, our computer science program values and encourages creativity and innovation. Students are given the opportunity to create new designs and explore their creative and unique ideas with faculty who are excited and equipped to guide students in the process of exploration.

Our students explore how Computer Science reaches far beyond theory and practice, driving innovation in the sciences, with examples such as the Human Genome Project and AIDs vaccine research, and leading developments in engineering, business, entertainment, and education. Wherever your passions and creativity lead, studies in Computer Science will take you there!

What is particularly unique about studies in Computer Science is that experiments can be carried out in a simulated virtual laboratory. Your creativity needs no limits because even ideas that, for now, exist outside of the realm of physical possibility, can be carried out in a computer lab. Computer scientists can simulate outcomes before they happen, including mapping out natural disasters and population growth under a variety of different circumstances.

Students who are admitted in this program, can obtain Northern's 2-year diploma when they complete the four semesters of Northern's courses and they can also obtain a bachelor degree of Algoma University if they successfully complete the 7 semester courses.

Supply Chain Management is a two-year Ontario College Graduate Certificate program (completed in four semesters). It is designed for individuals looking at a career or who are currently employed in the area of supply chain and logistics management. Students will learn to research and analyze the marketplace; develop demand forecasts; evaluate suppliers’ capabilities to deliver; utilize logistics technology tools and resources to assist in decision making; develop aggregate and master production plans/ schedules; and analyze business processes.

Industry-standard theories, methods, and techniques (Six Sigma, Total Quality Management, Just-in-Time, Lean Theory of Constraints) and how they apply to supply chain management strategies and problem solving will also be covered. Graduates of this program will have applied knowledge in the field of supply chain management within a global economy, from planning, sourcing, producing and delivering the product or service. This program will provide students with valuable and relevant work experience, transferable skills sought by employers, and an opportunity to explore career interests before graduation. Through the Work placement experience, students will enhance the understanding of Supply Chain and Logistics learned in class and practice the business skills in the real-world.

Practically all businesses depend on Information Technology. There is a growing need for companies to understand and strategically manage huge quantities of information allowing them to grow and maintain a competitive edge in industry. This has created a need for professionals with knowledge skill sets in both the business and technology fields individuals who can turn a vision into a reality. Computers, the Internet, wireless communications, databases are all forms of information technology which are used to collect, analyze, and share information. Information systems management examines how this technology can be used effectively in a constantly changing business environment. The Information Systems Business Analysis program (ISBA) will help you develop critical skills in areas such as: application software, business data analysis and modeling, customer engagement management, business processes, enterprise resource planning, and communications. A fundamental part of the post-graduate ISBA is the opportunity for experiential learning integrated with in program. Students will have the opportunity to engage in the practice of business analysis for information technology (IT) by working through case studies and industry projects.

Employment Opportunities exist with in the Business or Technology sectors as: business or management information systems analysts, or information technology professionals. Work for banks, manufacturing, businesses within the private or the public service sector.

The Addiction and Mental Health Worker program provides students with evidence-based knowledge and skills in screening, assessing and responding to people with mental health, substance use and other addictions from diverse cultural and community perspectives.

Graduates will be prepared to analyze multiple and intersecting causes and impacts of addiction and mental health issues from a multidimensional framework that integrates an Anti-Oppressive Practice (AOP) lens, inclusive of Indigenous and traditional approaches to healing. The focus of this approach will prepare students to work with individuals and family members experiencing addiction and mental health issues and challenges, as well as to intervene in an advocacy role at organizational and systems levels to promote equitable access to supports and services, including health promotion and prevention/harm reduction.

The field placement component of this program provides students with the opportunity to work in inter-professional teams to gain direct practice experience providing support to clients and families/kin through case management, assessment and referral and navigating systems of care.

The Office Administration Executive Program improves the skills acquired in year one, while increasing knowledge in specialized areas of office administration. Students will soon realize that they will have the ability to transfer learned skills to relevant situations in several work environments. Our Office Administration Executive Program focuses on:

In the business world, solid accounting skills combined with marketing strategy and creativity are in high demand.  The wide variety of courses offered within this program will yield a well-rounded Business Graduate.               

The Ontario Building Code sets out the minimum safety requirements regarding public health, fire protection and structural sufficiency. This program has been developed to assist those students that enter the design, inspection or construction industry to interpret and apply code requirements correctly. The Building Inspection Technician Program is a two-year program that includes academic, technical, and code skills. Along with a foundation of building code courses, the placement component will be an integral feature of the program.

By connecting businesses and consumers into a single global market, the Internet has become a powerful marketing tool. Northern’s Business – Marketing program is angled towards E-commerce and is designed to equip students with an array of high-tech marketing skills. They will learn how to sell ideas and services in the web environment, use web resources, prospect and generate sales through the Internet, develop Internet marketing plans and apply a wide variety of Internet marketing tools. The first year of this program will provide students with a solid and essential foundation in business. In the second year, they will be immersed in the world of marketing and E-commerce. Construction has become an industry of skill and precision. The construction industry needs people who can handle everything from estimating to sales, and who know how everything in the building process fits together. Northern’s two-year program is designed to help students enter the construction and building management industry with a knowledge of construction law and management. Students will practice the skills required by today’s construction industry. They will learn computerized drawing and detailing, surveying, methods and materials, specification writing, building code, residential and commercial estimating, engineering materials testing and mechanical installation. Overall, this unique mixture of architectural, civil, structural and mechanical knowledge and skills will give students an insight into the technical requirements of building construction and maintenance.
