This program is a flexible program that provides students with access to a wide variety of post secondary options. While exploring different areas of study such as community services, business, health sciences, and technology and working toward a college certificate or diploma, students earn credits that may be transferred to other college programs or university. The program focuses on developing enhanced skills in communication, critical thinking and computer literacy to build a solid foundation for future studies and career success. This program offers students the opportunity to:

• Design a program of study that upgrades their qualifications for other university and college programs.
• Obtain a general post-secondary education before deciding on a career path.
• Personalize a program of study based on their goals and interests.
• Earn credits that can be transferred to a variety of program areas at college or university.
• Attend college even if they have been unable to gain entry into the program of their choice due to limited enrolment.

Program Outcomes
Upon completion of this program, you will be able to:

• Develop communication skills to a level required by business and industry

• Develop a general knowledge of a variety of subjects that will contribute to developing insights into self and society

• Transfer the credits gained in approved courses towards a baccalaureate (B.A./B.Sc) at selected universities or to other college programs.

This program will teach you how to analyze and solve automotive system problems, diagnose and repair mechanical, electronic and electrical automotive components and systems while teaching you how to use a variety of troubleshooting techniques and testing equipment to support automotive transportation.

Social Service Workers focus on promoting equality, and addressing disadvantages that people face on the basis of race, disability, gender or age. They use their knowledge of human behaviour and development, communication, interviewing and counseling skills, to work with groups and/or communities to help them become more caring and capable of supporting their communities.

This program prepares students to work with people who are experiencing stressful events in their lives from an individual, family and community perspective. Students will learn how to intervene in crisis situations and will develop skills needed to assist individual clients, groups, families and communities to better meet their challenges and to enhance their social functioning. Clinical practice labs and field placements provide a milieu where students are able to apply theory into practice through interviewing, case assessment and planning. Students must be able to apply skills, such as teamwork and group work outside of class. They may also be required to seek feedback from agency professionals for lab work and video assignments. Northern College values lifelong learning in an effort to maintain the current competencies outlined by the Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Service Workers. Practically all businesses depend on Information Technology. There is a growing need for companies to understand and strategically manage huge quantities of information allowing them to grow and maintain a competitive edge in industry. This has created a need for professionals with knowledge skill sets in both the business and technology fields individuals who can turn a vision into a reality. Computers, the Internet, wireless communications, databases are all forms of information technology which are used to collect, analyze, and share information. Information systems management examines how this technology can be used effectively in a constantly changing business environment. The Information Systems Business Analysis program (ISBA) will help you develop critical skills in areas such as: application software, business data analysis and modeling, customer engagement management, business processes, enterprise resource planning, and communications. A fundamental part of the post-graduate ISBA is the opportunity for experiential learning integrated with in program. Students will have the opportunity to engage in the practice of business analysis for information technology (IT) by working through case studies and industry projects.

Employment Opportunities exist with in the Business or Technology sectors as: business or management information systems analysts, or information technology professionals. Work for banks, manufacturing, businesses within the private or the public service sector.

Business students who decide to continue their studies in the three-year Business Administration Diploma program, can choose a combination of courses to suit their interests and needs. They will be able to select courses from the other Business program options offered – Accounting, Marketing, Community Economic and Social Development or Human Resource Management. In the business world, solid accounting skills combined with marketing strategy and creativity are in high demand. By selecting a combination of electives from the marketing and accounting areas, students can actually customize a business program to fit their interests and strengths.

Business Fundamentals is a common first year business program for Northern College’s two-year business programs in Accounting, Human Resources, Marketing, Business General studies, and Global Business, Entrepreneurship, and Technology. This program offers intakes in September and January. Students starting in January take two semesters of study ending in early July, and then continue with second year studies in the fall.

The Addiction and Mental Health Worker program provides students with evidence-based knowledge and skills in screening, assessing and responding to people with mental health, substance use and other addictions from diverse cultural and community perspectives.

Graduates will be prepared to analyze multiple and intersecting causes and impacts of addiction and mental health issues from a multidimensional framework that integrates an Anti-Oppressive Practice (AOP) lens, inclusive of Indigenous and traditional approaches to healing. The focus of this approach will prepare students to work with individuals and family members experiencing addiction and mental health issues and challenges, as well as to intervene in an advocacy role at organizational and systems levels to promote equitable access to supports and services, including health promotion and prevention/harm reduction.

The field placement component of this program provides students with the opportunity to work in inter-professional teams to gain direct practice experience providing support to clients and families/kin through case management, assessment and referral and navigating systems of care.

Our Police Foundations Program is geared to provide an exciting learning experience for all our students. Academic studies combined with hands on realistic training gives our students the skills and knowledge they will need in furthering their goals of obtaining a career in law enforcement. Due to our smaller class sizes the students have the access to instructors and learning material that helps them to be successful in their studies.

Our instructors are serving and retired officers from Timmins Police and the Ontario Provincial Police. Northern College has a great partnership with both the Timmins Police Service and the O.P.P as well as the Monteith Correctional center.

Students will have the opportunity to volunteer with the O.P.P. in their block training during winter semesters. This is a chance to see firsthand officer training and gain networking accessibility.

In the fall of 2018 our new Integrated Emergency Services building was open. Along with state of the art class rooms we have a jail cell, cruiser bay, interview room, fingerprint and mugshot room, as well as a full size court room. Our facility also has a training lab along with a full training apartment to run scenarios. Outside is a training intersection for scenario use by all our emergency services program.

The Pre-Health Sciences Pathway to Advanced Diplomas and Degrees program prepares graduates for success in professional health career programs. This program provides an admissions pathway into the Bachelor of Science – Nursing, Practical Nursing, and Paramedic programs at Northern College. It also provides admission requirements for most health career programs offered at other Ontario community colleges and is a partner in several university articulation agreements.

Construction has become an industry of skill and precision. The construction industry needs people who can handle everything from estimating to sales, and who know how everything in the building process fits together. Northern’s two-year program is designed to help students enter the construction and building management industry with a knowledge of construction law and management. Students will practice the skills required by today’s construction industry. They will learn computerized drawing and detailing, surveying, methods and materials, specification writing, building code, residential and commercial estimating, engineering materials testing and mechanical installation. Overall, this unique mixture of architectural, civil, structural and mechanical knowledge and skills will give students an insight into the technical requirements of building construction and maintenance.
