The Pre-Health Sciences Pathway to Advanced Diplomas and Degrees program prepares graduates for success in professional health career programs. This program provides an admissions pathway into the Bachelor of Science – Nursing, Practical Nursing, and Paramedic programs at Northern College. It also provides admission requirements for most health career programs offered at other Ontario community colleges and is a partner in several university articulation agreements.

Mechanical Engineering Technicians provide technical support and services including design, development, testing, manufacture, and maintenance of machines, tools, engines, heating and ventilating systems, piping, and electronic equipment. Students will learn to make sketches, layouts, 2D drawings, 3D models, record and analyze engineering data, make calculations & estimates and report their findings.

The Business – Human Resources program will prepare students to participate in staffing, performance management, training, employee relations, health and safety, and benefits and compensation administration functions. Students will develop skills in communication, information technology, and teamwork, and will learn organizational development strategies to support the human resources activities of an organization.

The Addiction and Mental Health Worker program provides students with evidence-based knowledge and skills in screening, assessing and responding to people with mental health, substance use and other addictions from diverse cultural and community perspectives.

Graduates will be prepared to analyze multiple and intersecting causes and impacts of addiction and mental health issues from a multidimensional framework that integrates an Anti-Oppressive Practice (AOP) lens, inclusive of Indigenous and traditional approaches to healing. The focus of this approach will prepare students to work with individuals and family members experiencing addiction and mental health issues and challenges, as well as to intervene in an advocacy role at organizational and systems levels to promote equitable access to supports and services, including health promotion and prevention/harm reduction.

The field placement component of this program provides students with the opportunity to work in inter-professional teams to gain direct practice experience providing support to clients and families/kin through case management, assessment and referral and navigating systems of care.

Business students who decide to continue their studies in the three-year Business Administration Diploma program, can choose a combination of courses to suit their interests and needs. They will be able to select courses from the other Business program options offered – Accounting, Marketing, Community Economic and Social Development or Human Resource Management. In the business world, solid accounting skills combined with marketing strategy and creativity are in high demand. By selecting a combination of electives from the marketing and accounting areas, students can actually customize a business program to fit their interests and strengths.

Earn an Advanced Ontario Diploma in Civil Engineering Technology in only two years instead of three. We belong to a society of builders. Wherever humans have put down roots, they have raised roofs, walls and monuments to mark their places in space and time. Builders do something no other occupation can accomplish: they change the face of our world. There are technicians and technologists at every point along the building process. Civil engineering technologists assist in recommending design parameters to engineers, conduct inspections of structures, perform tests on soils, concrete or other building materials, analyze results of tests, prepare statistical data, tables and drawings, and supervise construction projects. Students will learn to draw, design and inspect structures in buildings and highways, perform tests on soils and concrete, and survey using the latest equipment. During their second year, they will complete an independent technical report related to civil engineering.

By connecting businesses and consumers into a single global market, the Internet has become a powerful marketing tool. Northern’s Business – Marketing program is angled towards E-commerce and is designed to equip students with an array of high-tech marketing skills. They will learn how to sell ideas and services in the web environment, use web resources, prospect and generate sales through the Internet, develop Internet marketing plans and apply a wide variety of Internet marketing tools. The first year of this program will provide students with a solid and essential foundation in business. In the second year, they will be immersed in the world of marketing and E-commerce. Personal support workers are unregulated health care providers. They work under the supervision of a regulated health professional, supervisor, or in the supported independent living environment under the direction of the client. They provide clearly identified personal care, routine activities of daily living and home management services, by following care/service plans and established policies and procedures. Personal support workers are responsible for their work to their clients and to their employers. Workers providing long term care and support services form the backbone of both community and facility services. They are often the people with whom clients/consumers have the most contact and with whom they develop close relationships. The attitude and approach of workers and their abilities are critical to the well being, comfort, safety and health of the people they support.

Education to prepare support workers assists them to develop a broad range of abilities beyond dexterity skills, which emphasizes the value of their role and reflects true sensitivity and respect for the individuality of each consumer/client. This program was developed as part of the Ontario provincial government’s plan to reform long term care and support services provided to people living at home and in long term care facilities. The Personal Support Worker Program is a two semester program consisting of theory and clinical practice in both institutional and community settings

Construction has become an industry of skill and precision. The construction industry needs people who can handle everything from estimating to sales, and who know how everything in the building process fits together. Northern’s two-year program is designed to help students enter the construction and building management industry with a knowledge of construction law and management. Students will practice the skills required by today’s construction industry. They will learn computerized drawing and detailing, surveying, methods and materials, specification writing, building code, residential and commercial estimating, engineering materials testing and mechanical installation. Overall, this unique mixture of architectural, civil, structural and mechanical knowledge and skills will give students an insight into the technical requirements of building construction and maintenance.
