Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Computer Science - Data Science

The Software Engineering program focuses on the analysis, design, development and testing of reliable and secure software systems, as well as the integration of software into complex systems, and the timely and cost-effective delivery of software systems, that meet changing requirements. The program applies both computer science and engineering principles.

Foundation year

• All Engineering students begin with a common foundation year, regardless of the program of study. During the foundation year, you will learn about the various Engineering programs available.

Is social media changing the world for better or worse? How do smartphones shape the way we think and behave? Can popular culture create and challenge stereotypes? Why are ads so effective at persuading people to buy?

In a time in which communications and digital media is ubiquitous, Communication and Digital Media Studies is a cutting-edge program designed to provide you with a strong foundation in scholarly, civic, and professional knowledge and skills pertaining to the roles, practices and impacts of communication and digital media in society.

You will learn about the fast-changing communication environment in which we live, explore the social and cultural impacts of many media and technology, and hone professionally relevant communication skills. You will develop specialized knowledge about how a range of media forms like TV shows, films, video games, wearables, smartphones, tablets, blogs, social networking platforms and search engines are changing the world. You will become a strong communicator who is able to present your ideas in a variety of forms such as research essays, case studies, journals, blogs, digital stories, mini-TED Talks, debates and videos.

Experiential learning

• A limited number of fourth-year students are granted an opportunity to participate in a learning experience with a community organization. The practicum course consists of 100 hours of fieldwork, several in-class seminars and a set of academic assignments. 

Our program prepares nurses who are committed to excellence and innovation in assessing and meeting the nursing needs of society. You will learn about nursing practice and the human experience of health, illness and healing. 

Collaborative learning activities allow you to take an active role in your own learning. In addition, our high- tech nursing labs and simulated learning opportunities provide you with practical, hands-on experience with the latest technology at your fingertips. 

Graduates of the program are eligible to write the National Council Examination-Registered Nurse (NCLEX-RN). Individuals must comply with the registration requirements of the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO). 

This program is offered in partnership with Durham College. 

Experiential learning

• With the Nursing program's strong clinical focus, you have opportunities each year to develop your nursing skills and knowledge in the finest hospitals and agencies in the region through clinical placements.
• Clinical placements are a core component in each year of the Nursing program, starting from the first year of studies. Students appreciate and embrace the opportunity to apply their learning in a clinical setting. They are committed to becoming leaders in health-care delivery. They recognize the necessity and importance of working with trained professionals and their patients to enhance their knowledge and further their own skills and professional development.

Integrating key business functions with the use and understanding of today’s latest technologies, this program provides you with the skills necessary for employment in a competitive market.

The first two years of the program have a common curriculum featuring simulations, teamwork and case studies. In your third year, you may choose one of the following five majors:

• Organizational Behaviour and Human Resources Management
• Technology Management

Marketing

• This area of study develops and deepens your knowledge of consumer behaviour, marketing research, digital marketing and strategy formulation in a dynamic environment.

Energy supply, medicine, agriculture, national security, manufacturing and resource-based industries are all examples of where the use of radioactive materials or radiation-generating machines are an essential part of operations. Radiation is also used to study materials and matter on the atomic scale. Our curriculum is a combination of fundamental radiation science, technological methods and applications to prepare you for a successful career.

Our programs are designed in consultation with key industry representatives, and will provide you with necessary theoretical and applied skills to meet employers' needs.

Do groups of people make better decisions than individuals? How do clinicians diagnose mental illness in children and adults? Can we empathize equally with people from different cultural backgrounds?

Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Arts in Psychology program will receive a core first year of social science courses with their second year reserved for foundational psychology courses. Students will also be required to take a number of additional social science electives in their upper years of study. This program will be of particular interest to students wishing to pursue studies in the social, personality and developmental characteristics of human behaviour.

Students will receive a solid foundation in research methods and statistics as well as highly marketable skills in a variety of tech-focused domains. The knowledge students will gain from this program will put them in strong positions for additional education or direct-to-work opportunities in areas such as business, community development, advocacy, public policy, security and marketing.

Experiential learning

• Experiential learning opportunities will be fostered through volunteer, practicum, internship and directed lab research opportunities, each of which will give students hands-on experience in their field of interest.
• A limited number of fourth-year students have the opportunity to acquire workplace skills through an immersive internship or practicum experience with a partner organization.

Organizational Behaviour and Human Resources Management

• This major will help you develop the skills and knowledge required to transform an organization's most important asset, human capital, into a sustainable competitive advantage. It prepares you for a human resources career, providing you with the courses needed to pursue the Certified Human Resources Leader professional designation. 

Kinesiology focuses on human movement and optimizing performance and quality of life. This comprehensive program covers the behavioural, biomechanical, physiological and psychosocial aspects of human health and performance. Knowledge is applied to several settings including rehabilitation, adapted physical activity, sport, exercise and general health in people of varying abilities. You will be prepared for provincial and national professional examinations. 

Experiential learning
Kinesiology students may pursue internship opportunities for one term or a full year. Working in the field of athletic therapy or exercise and rehabilitation, you are able to use skills you learned in the classroom and apply them to real-world experiences.

• Research projects involving exercise and special populations (e.g., cancer, depression)

This specialization within the Biological Science program consists of an integrated and focused concentration on biology and chemistry, with additional courses in neuroscience, physiology, and human anatomy. You will gain a detailed understanding of the structure and functioning of the human body.

This program provides an excellent basis for writing the Medical College Admission Test® (MCAT®) exam and for satisfying course requirements for applying to professional programs in medicine, pharmacy, and dentistry.

Individuals interested in this specialization will apply directly to Life Sciences through the Ontario Universities' Application Centre using application code DSU.

As a Computer Science student in the Data Science specialization, you will develop the knowledge, skills, and tools, to set you up for success in this desirable job market. You will also develop critical problem-solving, analytical, and computational skills that will enable you to turn vast quantities of data into insight.
