Bachelor of Science (Honours) - Marine Biology (Co-op-Optional)

Pursue an area of Biological Science that is rapidly growing and which applies to many day-to-day applications, such as health, agriculture and industry.

Individuals interested in this specialization will apply directly to Applied Biotechnology through the Ontario Universities' Application Centre using application code DSF.

Biological science is the study of life at its most fundamental level. The foundational areas of cell biology, genetics and molecular biology, physiology, biochemistry and developmental biology are mastered in this program.

You can pursue the Honours Biological Science program or choose to specialize in one of the following areas:

• Environmental Toxicology:- Environmental toxicology is an interdisciplinary applied field involving health, agriculture, urban development and industry. It combines a strong base in biology and chemistry, with a focus on physiology, biochemistry, environmental science and environmental chemistry.
• Life Sciences:- This specialization consists of an integrated and focused concentration on biology and chemistry, with additional courses in neuroscience and human anatomy. You will gain a detailed understanding of the structure and functioning of the human body, how the brain and nervous systems work, and what happened when the brain degenerates and becomes damaged or disorganized.
• Pharmaceutical Biotechnology:- Biotechnology is a rapidly growing area with many applicants in health, agriculture and industry. This specialization combines a primary emphasis on biology and chemistry with molecular and cell biology, pharmacology, biochemistry and physiology. Students in this specialization also benefit from enhanced laboratory experience.
• Science and Management:- If you are interested in managerial and leadership roles, consider applying for the five-year Bachelor of Science and Management (Honours) program in your upper years of study. Graduates gain a solid foundation in the key functional areas of business and management, including finance, accounting, operations, project management and marketing.
• There is a wealth of opportunities for science graduates in industry, government, and in areas of applied science. The combination of a science degree and business and management education will give an added advantage to graduates in establishing careers within these practical fields.

Chemical biology is a specialization within the university's Chemistry program. Chemical biology, at the interface of chemistry and biology, is a rapidly growing interdisciplinary area in science. Through the synthesis and use of small molecules, probes, or chemically-modified biological macromolecules, chemistry is applied to help answer key questions of biological importance.

Experiential learning
A five-year Co-operative Education option is available in all of our Science programs (except for Forensic Science, which already has an embedded experiential component), all of which satisfy the guidelines of the Canadian Association for Co-operative Education. These combine an Honours Bachelor of Science program with embedded work terms. The co-op option gives you opportunities to apply your classroom and lab concepts to real-world situations and help you gain valuable, relevant work experience to promote networking and lifelong career success.

Co-op work terms give you the opportunity to earn a competitive salary that will help pay for your university degree and the work experience to help clarify your career objectives. This specialization within the Biological Science program consists of an integrated and focused concentration on biology and chemistry, with additional courses in neuroscience, physiology, and human anatomy. You will gain a detailed understanding of the structure and functioning of the human body.

This program provides an excellent basis for writing the Medical College Admission Test® (MCAT®) exam and for satisfying course requirements for applying to professional programs in medicine, pharmacy, and dentistry.

Organizational Behaviour and Human Resources Management

• This major will help you develop the skills and knowledge required to transform an organization's most important asset, human capital, into a sustainable competitive advantage. It prepares you for a human resources career, providing you with the courses needed to pursue the Certified Human Resources Leader professional designation. 

Explore the current state of knowledge in astrophysics, examine new and emerging theories, and utilize modern techniques to analyze and solve problems in astronomy and astrophysics.

Do groups of people make better decisions than individuals? How do clinicians diagnose mental illness in children and adults? Can we empathize equally with people from different cultural backgrounds?

Students enrolled in the Bachelor of Arts in Psychology program will receive a core first year of social science courses with their second year reserved for foundational psychology courses. Students will also be required to take a number of additional social science electives in their upper years of study. This program will be of particular interest to students wishing to pursue studies in the social, personality and developmental characteristics of human behaviour.

Students will receive a solid foundation in research methods and statistics as well as highly marketable skills in a variety of tech-focused domains. The knowledge students will gain from this program will put them in strong positions for additional education or direct-to-work opportunities in areas such as business, community development, advocacy, public policy, security and marketing.

Experiential learning

• Experiential learning opportunities will be fostered through volunteer, practicum, internship and directed lab research opportunities, each of which will give students hands-on experience in their field of interest.
• A limited number of fourth-year students have the opportunity to acquire workplace skills through an immersive internship or practicum experience with a partner organization.

Is social media changing the world for better or worse? How do smartphones shape the way we think and behave? Can popular culture create and challenge stereotypes? Why are ads so effective at persuading people to buy?

In a time in which communications and digital media is ubiquitous, Communication and Digital Media Studies is a cutting-edge program designed to provide you with a strong foundation in scholarly, civic, and professional knowledge and skills pertaining to the roles, practices and impacts of communication and digital media in society.

You will learn about the fast-changing communication environment in which we live, explore the social and cultural impacts of many media and technology, and hone professionally relevant communication skills. You will develop specialized knowledge about how a range of media forms like TV shows, films, video games, wearables, smartphones, tablets, blogs, social networking platforms and search engines are changing the world. You will become a strong communicator who is able to present your ideas in a variety of forms such as research essays, case studies, journals, blogs, digital stories, mini-TED Talks, debates and videos.

Experiential learning

• A limited number of fourth-year students are granted an opportunity to participate in a learning experience with a community organization. The practicum course consists of 100 hours of fieldwork, several in-class seminars and a set of academic assignments. 

Crime is not committed in a vacuum. It occurs in a particular socio-economic and political context. Criminology examines the broader social and individual contexts that lead to criminal behaviour. It also examines how criminal justice is shaped by larger social, political and technological contexts, and how those contexts are translated into practice in agencies such as the police, courts, corrections, the juvenile system and various social and government service agencies.

Our program explores and critically analyzes criminological and sociological theories of why people commit crime. It also examines how societies define crime and who is considered a criminal. Our program approaches the study of crime from an interdisciplinary perspective, drawing on a rich tradition from criminology, sociology, philosophy, psychology and law. In addition to examining why crime is committed, you will be encouraged to think about crime, criminal justice and its administration in ways that are consistent with the principles of fairness, equity, peace and justice.

Experiential learning

• A limited number of fourth-year students are granted an opportunity to participate in a learning experience with a community organization. The practicum is an experiential learning tool that provides students with opportunities to acquire workplace skills and knowledge, confront the relationship between theory and practice, and cultivate a sense of personal and professional development. The Practicum course consists of 100 hours of fieldwork, several in-class seminars and a set of academic assignments.

The only program of its kind in Canada, the Manufacturing Engineering program is about the design and improvement of high?tech systems for the production and manufacturing of products. This includes the development and application of advanced technologies such as robotics, automation, new materials and intelligent controls.

Foundation year

• All Engineering students begin with a common foundation year, regardless of the program of study. During the foundation year, you will learn about the various Engineering programs available.

Experiential learning

• Optional internship and co-op placements provide you with the opportunity to gain meaningful hands-on experience.
