Overview

This two-year program provides a solid foundation in information technology with focus on the following technical areas:

  • Application Development builds proficiency in application development for business systems. Languages include Java, C#, and Ruby.
  • Database Management will provide you with a highly developed skill set focused on daily operation of relational databases, system administration, backup and recovery, advanced SQL, and data warehousing.
  • Network Management will give you the skills needed for network administration, security and disaster recovery, platform integration, and Windows and Unix servers. Some courses are integrated with established programs such as the Cisco Networking Academy Program.
  • Web Development will provide you with the specialized skills you need to develop content for the Web, including server-side technologies, introductory Internet security, platform integration, and mobile technologies.

The program provides training in three distinct areas:

  • Technical training
  • Related business courses for understanding business systems
  • Practical applied training, through an industry project or paid co-op work term

Co-op/Practicum Information
In your second year of the program, you must complete an experiential semester by undertaking either a co-operative education term or an industry project term. 
Co-operative education integrates related on-the-job training with classroom theory by alternating terms of academic study and paid employment.  Provided you have a minimum grade point average (GPA) of 2.0, you have the option of taking a four-month paid Co-op work experience term. The College makes every effort to secure work placements for all Co-op students. However, the College does not unconditionally guarantee a work placement to students who enrol in programs incorporating Co-op.

The first year of this program is designed to prepare students to work in hospitality and tourism businesses by providing courses aimed at developing a fundamental business and customer service background. Students will study through classroom based course work and lab based lunchtime fine dining service in Jane’s restaurant. Students will also obtain certifications in First Aid and It's Good Business. While a one year exit-certificate is available, it is recommended that students complete a diploma to be most competitive in the marketplace after graduation. 

In the second year of the program, students will select a major course of study in one of two areas:

The Hotel and Restaurant Management major focuses primarily on developing skills to work in the food and beverage and accommodation areas of the tourism industry. The courses are delivered from a management perspective and include classroom and lab based course work. Hospitality Simulation offered in the final term is the capstone course in which you work in teams to resolve a variety of case studies, drawing on your academic and work experience from previous terms.

The Tourism Management major concentrates on building skills in a variety of business models in a variety of Tourism sub-sectors including attractions, events and tourism services.  In a capstone course in the final term, students will work on teams during Tourism Entrepreneurship, to develop a visitor attraction using skills learned and developed from previous academic/work terms.

This program trains you for entry-level employment as an engineering technologist in the electrical industry, which provides a broad range of employment opportunities. You develop the conceptual knowledge base and troubleshooting skills to prepare you for a range of roles that include design, installation, maintenance, production, and technical sales and support.

Topics in the program include:

  • Use and application of programmable logic controllers (PLCs), variable frequency motor drives (VFDs), soft starters, and data communication to link all of the preceding elements for the control of manufacturing systems.
  • Planning, designing, and specifications of power systems with motor protection for buildings and industrial plants. You will generate AutoCAD drawings, calculate short circuit currents, and coordinate fuses, circuit breakers, and protective relays. Canadian Electrical Code instruction is delivered by journeyman electricians.

The 3D Computer Graphics (3DCG) program is an eight-month advanced certificate program, which means students need to have a diploma or degree in a related field such as digital media design, graphic design, fine arts, or architecture. The program complements RRC’s two-year Digital Media Design diploma program, and focuses on building skills in areas such as modeling, lighting, rendering, compositing, animation, motion capture and real-time 3d applications and production management.

Each student will be provided a 3D workstation and all the software needed to complete the program.

Graduates of the 3D Computer Graphics program may find employment in visual effects, motion graphics, video game design, 3D simulation and virtual/augmented reality, prototyping and 3D printing, and medical imaging industries. Some graduates may choose self-employment as freelance artists.
