Overview

Health Care Assistants (HCAs) are prepared to work in both healthcare facilities and community agencies. In these roles they are important and valued members of the health care team. They promote and maintain the health, safety, independence, comfort and well-being of individuals and families. HCA’s provide personal care assistance and services in a caring manner that recognizes and supports the unique needs, abilities and backgrounds of clients. They work as members of a health care team in a variety of settings with direction and supervision from other health professionals.

The work done by HCAs is based on a set of fundamental values, beliefs and ethical principles that are consistently reflected in all aspects of their work with clients, families, team members and others. Amongst these core values, beliefs and principles, which serve as foundations of HCA practice, are those related to:

The HCA Internationally Educated with Co-op Program is designed for the student whose first language is not English. This program provides the student with additional language support by front-loading foundational and functional English language at the beginning of the program and will continue to support academic success throughout the program. The HCA Internationally Educated with Co-op Program is designed to provide students with opportunities to develop the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to function effectively as front-line care-givers, and respected members of the healthcare team, in community and facility settings. Under the direction and supervision of a health care professional, graduates provide person-centred care aimed at promoting and maintaining the physical, emotional, cognitive, and social well-being of clients. The ESL support will be provided by a qualified ESL instructor who will work closely with the HCA instructional team to promote student learning.

Other components to the HCA Program are Basic and Advanced Hospice Palliative Care Training, Crisis Prevention Training, Introduction to RAI Observation Tool Training, Acute Care Skills, Medication Administration Assistance, Standard First Aid with CPR-C and AED, Foodsafe, WHMIS and Student Practice Education ‘Core’ Orientation (SPECO). These will be completed during the program and are included in program costs. All of these additional certifications are valued by today’s employers. Post-Graduate Certificate in Nursing (Co-op)

This program provides training for internationally educated nurses to adapt to Canadian best practices in nursing. This program prepares internationally trained nurses for roles within the Canadian health care system. Students will develop critical thinking skills used in nursing and will develop cultural awareness and administration skills that are an important part of nursing in Canada.

During the program, students will work on test-taking strategies and nursing topics that are essential in preparation for the Nursing Community Assessment Service (NCAS), which is a pre-requisite to writing the NCLEX RN (Canadian National Nursing Exam).

NCAS provides a three-part competency assessment for internationally-educated health practitioners (IEPs) — including health care aides, licensed practical nurses, registered nurses, and psychiatric nurses — who hope to practice in British Columbia.

In order to work as an RN in Canada, Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs) must complete a 4-stage application process. Please see the “additional info tab” for more information.

This program includes a practicum placement. This experience within a workplace enables Instructional staff to observe the student in a practice situation while providing the student with the opportunity to gain direct exposure to the chosen career field.

The hospitality industry is one of BC’s leading industries. Students who choose to study this program will be prepared to pursue successful careers at hotels, cruise ships, excursions, wineries, and various other attractions in the tourism and hospitality industry.

During this 45-week program, students will take the Hospitality Core, Hospitality Today, and Hospitality Service Delivery course as well as 10 weeks of electives that build upon essential business skills. Throughout the program, students will experience hands-on training in courses where they will have the opportunity to apply learned knowledge into real-life scenarios.

In the Hospitality Core course, students will develop their critical thinking and presentation skills as well as learn the basics of hospitality. This program gives the student the skills and occupational competencies necessary in the industry today based upon the Ministry for Children and Family Development approved curriculum.

Students in this program will develop a broad range of skills through the study and practice of certified courses in order to develop and lead daily age-appropriate activities for children aimed to help promote social, emotional, physical, cognitive and early literacy development. Students learn to observe children and communicate professionally, when appropriate, children’s progress and/or needs with parents, other staff members and individuals involved with the child’s development.

Graduates are eligible to apply for an Early Childhood Educator license from the Ministry for Children and Family Development.
