Do you love the thought of a domestic or international career? Whether you dream of traveling abroad, or prefer to remain closer to home, the Hospitality program at St. Lawrence College will prepare you to launch a dynamic and satisfying career in the diverse and exciting Hospitality Industry.

There is a high demand for skilled and knowledgeable people in all areas of the hospitality industry, especially in the food, beverage, and accommodations sectors. You will learn about a variety of topics – accommodations management, food and beverage management, specialized marketing, conferencing and banqueting, and financial management to name a few.

Our program’s curriculum remains current through regular consultation with industry leaders. This real-world input ensures that your educational needs and future career expectations are being met and that you are job-ready when you graduate. Your professors have extensive work experience in the industry and will help develop the essential skills required to be an effective supervisor, manager and leader in hospitality organizations locally, nationally and internationally. To support this development, you will participate in a four-week field placement in a qualified work site of your choice.

A student graduating from the Office Administration - Legal/Health Services program will graduate with two diplomas, Office Administration - Legal and Office Administration - Health Services, opening the door to a variety of employment opportunities in both the private and public work sectors. Graduate employment rates released in the fall 2019 showed 95%-100% employment.

Students will gain knowledge in the following areas:

• Technical skills:
  • Advanced level Office 365/2019 cloud-based computer application skills including Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, OneNote etc.
  • Outlook 365 - students become proficient in producing professional email communications, creating folders to stay organized, use of Outlook calendar to book appointments and schedule meetings.
  • Additional software applications include PCLaw, The Conveyancer, Teraview, Automated Civil Litigation (ACL), Accuro EMR, Adobe Acrobat DC Pro and Sage 50.
  • Students will be required to achieve a keyboarding speed of 50-60 GWPM.
  • Students learn to share and edit documents in a cloud-based environment.  Using MS Teams, collaboration software students learn how to book, attend and chair virtual meetings.
• Soft skills:
  • Client, patient and customer relationships are built on the use of effective and consistent communication as well as the ability to uphold and maintain confidentiality. The ability to work both independently and collaboratively are skills that are highly valued.
  • Employers seek office administrators that are highly organized, forward thinking and have the ability to problem solve.  Students have the opportunity to enhance these skills through learning by example with regular classroom exercises and participating in the student work placement experience.

Develop knowledge and practical skill in areas of carpentry, including blueprint reading, residential and commercial construction, framing, finishing, stair manufacture, surveying, fine woodworking, commercial building practices, and more. Spend 1/3 of each week in a hands on carpentry lab setting.

Today’s electrical field is extremely broad and diverse. Employers need motivated people who have the knowledge and skills to design, implement and maintain power generation, distribution and control systems, entertainment and communication systems, and process, automation and manufacturing systems.

The Electrical Engineering Technician Program will provide students with the theoretical and practical skills required to meet these demanding job opportunities. Graduates of the Electrical Engineering Technician Program will have a well-rounded practical and theoretical knowledge of many aspects of the electrical field.

Some areas of study will include, but are not limited to the following:

• Canadian Electrical Code usage and application 
• Reading and creating blueprints, schematics and wiring diagrams 
• Residential, commercial and industrial wiring 
• Industrial process measurement, calibration and control 
• Power electronics with application to power and motor speed control equipment 
• Industrial automation systems with programmable logic controllers and motor control equipment 
• Power generation and distribution equipment 
• Fire alarm, security and communication systems   

The General Arts & Science Diploma provides a broad liberal arts curriculum designed with the advice of our community partners, to prepare students for the workforce, other college programs, or transfer to university. Paired with hands-on instruction, and exciting new experiential learning opportunities, General Arts and Science Diploma graduates leave us prepared for their next steps out into the world.

Core courses provide a solid foundation in communications, critical thinking skills, digital literacy, numeracy, inclusivity, science, and general education. Complementing these are varied electives such as Film, Addictions, Fitness, Psychology, and dozens more. Our students scaffold their studies by earning at least three Advanced Level Learning credits, in both applied and social sciences, math, and/or communications before graduating.

In the third and fourth semesters, GAS Diploma students will learn to research various local issues, and apply the skills and knowledge gained in the program to offer creative solutions to one specific problem in a community.

• Students who self-identify as Pre-University work with the Program Coordinator to further customize their diploma course selection in preparation for university study. Key academic areas (Communications, Applied Science, Social Science, Math) are emphasized in accordance with the student's goals. Potential transfer opportunities exist at a number of Canadian universities; exploring these possibilities is at the discretion of the student. The General Arts & Science (Certificate) program offers a foundational year for students preparing for future study in a wide range of fields. For stu­dents in the Technology stream, core courses in communications, computers, and personal development are enhanced by courses in math, chemistry, and physics. Graduates of the Technology stream are prepared for future study in college programs such as Civil Engineering Technology, Energy Systems Engineering Technician/Technology, Instrumentation and Control Engineering Technician/Technology,and Game Development Technician.

Child and Youth Care practitioners are specialists in facilitating change in children, youth and young adults who are experiencing a range of social, emotional and/or behavioural challenges. Children and youth respond to the impact of change, stress, loss, poverty, violence, abuse and neglect with a range of emotions and behaviours including confusion, anger, withdrawal, aggression, hopelessness, violence, and suicide. Many of the children or youth experience numerous challenges and may have a variety of diagnoses.

Additionally, increasing numbers of these youth are in conflict with the law and/or are receiving therapeutic intervention. Understanding the individual and the unique nature of his/her response is therefore an important first task. Child and Youth Care (CYC) practitioners are a valuable resource to children, youth and their families in this process. They commit themselves to understanding and interacting in therapeutic relationships with these children, youth, and their families to promote and facilitate positive change.

Graduates from our Energy Systems Engineering Technician and Technology (ESET) programs work in exciting new careers as Renewable Energy System Designers and Clean Energy System Project Managers and Installers.  In addition, our graduates have expertise in building energy management and building energy systems, where they find rewarding employment as Energy Managers and Energy Auditors.

Our many successful graduates illustrate how every year, businesses, governments and consumers are becoming more concerned with the financial and environmental costs of energy usage. Our ESET graduates are filling the growing needs of this marketplace for capable people with the knowledge and skills to design and implement renewable energy systems as well as to audit energy use in commercial and residential buildings and make recommendations to reduce energy demand and cost.

The Music and Digital Media (MDM) Program is the only program of its kind in Canada. This challenging program builds foundational skills related to music performance, multimedia, film and audio recording. MDM prepares students for careers in music and media industries, and further education, if they wish.

The program focuses on the connection between diverse artistic disciplines and creative integration of art forms. Studies in music are combined with digital media courses in video production and audio recording. Throughout the program, students study their primary instrument (or voice) in 10 private applied lessons per semester. In second year, students gain experience in composition, entrepreneurial skills, and integrated arts project work including performance, sound design and installation art.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) can affect an individual’s ability to communicate, socialize and function effectively at home, school and in their community. Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) can be used to develop new skills including language, social and play skills, self-help skills, academics, motor skills, life skills and appropriate behaviour.

Students in this highly specialized program learn to use a variety of evidence-based approaches to develop the skills of individuals with ASD across the lifespan by reviewing relevant literature, developing intervention plans, implementing programs, and collecting data to ensure intervention strategies effectively meet established goals.

Graduates:

• Understand the characteristics of the full spectrum of ASD and how human development occurs in the neuro-typical population;
• Know the range of evidence-based practices in autism treatment;
• Know how to complete curriculum-based assessments and functional assessments;
• Can plan, implement, and monitor interventions based on these assessment results;
• Know the ethical and professional requirements of working in the field of ABA
• Show leadership in the workplace by contributing knowledge and skills for practical solutions related to the treatment of ASD.

As this is a graduate certificate program, students can expect an intensive workload. Classes combine theory with active learning experiences and group work. Field placements are available in a range of settings and some may require the use of a vehicle.
