The General Arts & Science Diploma provides a broad liberal arts curriculum designed with the advice of our community partners, to prepare students for the workforce, other college programs, or transfer to university. Paired with hands-on instruction, and exciting new experiential learning opportunities, General Arts and Science Diploma graduates leave us prepared for their next steps out into the world.

Core courses provide a solid foundation in communications, critical thinking skills, digital literacy, numeracy, inclusivity, science, and general education. Complementing these are varied electives such as Film, Addictions, Fitness, Psychology, and dozens more. Our students scaffold their studies by earning at least three Advanced Level Learning credits, in both applied and social sciences, math, and/or communications before graduating.

In the third and fourth semesters, GAS Diploma students will learn to research various local issues, and apply the skills and knowledge gained in the program to offer creative solutions to one specific problem in a community.

• Diploma graduates are prepared to enter the workforce directly, or they may continue their studies in advanced level programs at the college.
• Students who self-identify as Pre-University work with the Program Coordinator to further customize their diploma course selection in preparation for university study. Key academic areas (Communications, Applied Science, Social Science, Math) are emphasized in accordance with the student's goals. Potential transfer opportunities exist at a number of Canadian universities; exploring these possibilities is at the discretion of the student. If you want to work in the growing and highly specialized field of applied behaviour analysis, as well as learn related therapeutic treatments, the Behavioural Science program is where you want to be. For over four decades, the Behavioural Science program has trained students to work front-line with a wide range of client populations in a variety of areas within the human services field. Students are taught how to develop and implement behavioural interventions to teach skills to clients and/or reduce challenging behaviours. 

Students interested in this program should have a strong desire to work with populations who present with complex behavioural, cognitive, emotional and/or psychological issues. They should also be comfortable to work with any population that presents with disruptive behaviours and/or intellectual challenges. Students coming to the program need to be prepared to complete practicum placements working with any of the client populations listed below under career opportunities. Our program trains students in specific treatment options that can be applied to work with any individual who presents with challenges rather than preparing students to work with only one or a specific client population.

  • Teach children to manage their behaviour and learn adaptive skills;
  • Assist people with intellectual disabilities to access community resources, learn new skills, and live more independently;
  • Teach youth at risk to improve social skills, manage interfering behaviours, and meet treatment goals;
  • Support persons with mental health challenges to reduce their stress, build self-management skills and organize daily activities;
  • Assist clients with acquired brain injuries to learn functional skills and develop life skills;
  • Work with offenders in correctional facilities to build positive skills and behaviours;
  • Recognize what an addiction is and understand various ways to prevent addiction and manage recovery.

Students complete four field placements where they receive experience and practical training in the skills they have learned in the classroom. Our program has many field placement possibilities in a variety of interesting and dynamic settings.

This program will provide you with the opportunity to excel in the vibrant, rewarding and highly mobile tourism industry. The skills you acquire in this program reflect employer needs and will help ensure that you are ready for the work environment. Art and cultural tourism, hospitality and tourism law, sport tourism, special events planning and management, eco and adventure tourism, and historical tourism are but a few of the many subject areas that you will explore.

The Pre-Health Sciences Pathway program prepares individuals for successful admission to, and future success in, certificate and diploma-level Health Sciences programs and other post-secondary studies. Courses in math, biology, and chemistry are complemented by studies in communications, computers, and general education. Program content provides students with the required knowledge and skills to meet admission requirements for future study in a college Health Sciences programs such as Paramedic, Practical Nursing, Veterinary Assistant and Medical Laboratory Assistant/Technician, and with transferable post-secondary credits where relevant.

Today’s electrical field is extremely broad and diverse. Employers need motivated people who have the knowledge and skills to design, implement and maintain power generation, distribution and control systems, entertainment and communication systems, and process, automation and manufacturing systems.

The Electrical Engineering Technician Program will provide students with the theoretical and practical skills required to meet these demanding job opportunities. Graduates of the Electrical Engineering Technician Program will have a well-rounded practical and theoretical knowledge of many aspects of the electrical field.

Some areas of study will include, but are not limited to the following:

• Canadian Electrical Code usage and application 
• Reading and creating blueprints, schematics and wiring diagrams 
• Residential, commercial and industrial wiring 
• Industrial process measurement, calibration and control 
• Power electronics with application to power and motor speed control equipment 
• Industrial automation systems with programmable logic controllers and motor control equipment 
• Power generation and distribution equipment 
• Fire alarm, security and communication systems   

The two-year diploma in Business is intended for students looking for a broad, well-integrated business education and the opportunity to study in more than one area of specialization. Built around a strong core of business foundation skills, the Business diplomas appeal to those interested in acquiring specific skills in key business areas such as accounting, marketing, and human resources. 

Highlights

On our Kingston campus, the first semester of Business programs is common for Accounting, Marketing, Human Resources, and Business. At the end of the second semester, students will have an opportunity to confirm their program of choice.

Students become effective communicators, trained in problem solving, teamwork and quality management. They are skilled in the use of current computer software applications in word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and presentation graphics. Two years at college will get you started in a challenging career in business.

How would you describe your experience?

"The General Business program is a great platform for you to explore what elements of business you enjoy and where your strengths lie; time that your first year may simply not allow for. I was not ready nor passionate enough about any of the streams to commit another two years and ~$7000 to one.  
 
Since you have the opportunity to choose both Marketing and HR electives, you can tailor your second year to meet your specific interests within those fields and work with students/faculty from all streams, thus increasing your network. What's more, your second year curriculum includes Project Management and Entrepreneurship, two courses that are not found in the other streams but which really help to round out your learning in all areas.
General Business may not have a placement, but that does not mean your options are diminished. If a placement is what you truly value in the three-year programs, there are many fast track or certificate programs which you can pursue following graduation from Gen Bus which contain placements.
When in doubt, speak with the School of Business faculty as they are always willing to help you. I have often gone to them for career and academic advice; when studying Gen Bus, you have all the more faculty in your corner and two awesome program co-coordinators, Wendy and Adam."

The General Arts & Science (Certificate) program offers a foundational year for students preparing for future study in a wide range of fields. For stu­dents in the Technology stream, core courses in communications, computers, and personal development are enhanced by courses in math, chemistry, and physics. Graduates of the Technology stream are prepared for future study in college programs such as Civil Engineering Technology, Energy Systems Engineering Technician/Technology, Instrumentation and Control Engineering Technician/Technology,and Game Development Technician.

All culinary programs offer the flexibility to decide if a Culinary Skills Certificate (one-year program) or a Culinary Management Diploma (two-year program) is the right fit.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) can affect an individual’s ability to communicate, socialize and function effectively at home, school and in their community. Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) can be used to develop new skills including language, social and play skills, self-help skills, academics, motor skills, life skills and appropriate behaviour.

Students in this highly specialized program learn to use a variety of evidence-based approaches to develop the skills of individuals with ASD across the lifespan by reviewing relevant literature, developing intervention plans, implementing programs, and collecting data to ensure intervention strategies effectively meet established goals.

Graduates:

• Understand the characteristics of the full spectrum of ASD and how human development occurs in the neuro-typical population;
• Know the range of evidence-based practices in autism treatment;
• Know how to complete curriculum-based assessments and functional assessments;
• Can plan, implement, and monitor interventions based on these assessment results;
• Know the ethical and professional requirements of working in the field of ABA
• Show leadership in the workplace by contributing knowledge and skills for practical solutions related to the treatment of ASD.

As this is a graduate certificate program, students can expect an intensive workload. Classes combine theory with active learning experiences and group work. Field placements are available in a range of settings and some may require the use of a vehicle.

There is a high demand for skilled and knowledgeable people in all areas of the hospitality industry, especially in the food, beverage, and accommodations sectors. You will learn about a variety of topics – accommodations management, food and beverage management, specialized marketing, conferencing and banqueting, and financial management to name a few.

Our program’s curriculum remains current through regular consultation with industry leaders. This real-world input ensures that your educational needs and future career expectations are being met and that you are job-ready when you graduate. Your professors have extensive work experience in the industry and will help develop the essential skills required to be an effective supervisor, manager and leader in hospitality organizations locally, nationally and internationally. To support this development, you will participate in a four-week field placement in a qualified work site of your choice.
