Economics analyzes how societies provide for their well-being, and examines the choices and tradeoffs that are made in the face of limited resources. You’ll study the competition and cooperation that arises among individuals, private organizations, and governments in the process of allocating scarce resources for a variety of different uses. Economics also offers insight into politics, law, history, environment, and development.

One may obtain the Economics Major through the 3-Year BA, the 4-Year BA or the BA Honours degree program. Some of the courses we offer are recommended for interdisciplinary programs, and it is common for other departments in the University to require or recommend certain Economics courses. The BA in Economics is highly recommended for students planning to go into law, accounting, or business studies.

The field of finance has its roots in the discipline of economics and business. This program will provide students with the conceptual tools to understand a number of issues from modern finance theory and applications. The program will provide students with a solid understanding of the operation of capital markets and capital market instruments, including equities, fixed income securities, as well futures markets, options and other derivatives. The program will provide students with an in-depth understanding of topics in modern finance and financial economics as it relates to the capital structure of firms and how these financial instruments affect the overall operation of modern financial systems.

Students have the option of pursuing a BA in Economics and Finance or a BBA in Economics in Finance.

The Screen and Cultural Studies Specialization focuses not only on literary texts, but also on cinematic, media, and cultural texts. Courses in this area reflect an interest in literary and cultural history; literary and cinematic forms, movements, and genres; cultural and critical theory; audience and reception studies; and the intersections between literature, film and other forms of cultural production.

All students are welcome to take courses in this area, whether they choose the specialization or not.

Statisticians use their expertise in agricultural research, health care research, quality control and actuarial work. In the face of uncertainty, statisticians use data to make predictions about sales, product demand, weather forecasts and product quality.  Statisticians design and analyze the results of clinical trials to study the safety and effectiveness of new medications or to compare cancer treatments.  Almost every government agency employs statisticians.  They work with specialists such as economists, biologists, chemists, and doctors to assist in the design of experiments and the analysis of research data. Statisticians are highly employable with the majority working for private corporations or government departments and agencies.

Welcome to the History of Art programme at the University of Winnipeg. We are a dedicated group of scholars committed to the study of art, broadly defined, as it reveals the past and informs the future. Drawing on the experience of our scholars, the expertise of local curators and a rewarding relationship with the local arts community, together we are able to deliver a strong, vibrant and practical curriculum focussed on excellence, accessability and innovation.

 The East Asian region constitutes one of the most dynamic and intellectually rich regions in the world. The impact of East Asian economic development has been keenly felt in recent decades and the region has a major impact on world affairs. The legacy of East Asian history, religious and social values, literatures, etc., is a major factor in current affairs in the region, and this legacy will continue to shape our global future.

The EALC program is devoted to the study of East Asian cultures. The program introduces students to East Asian cultures and societies through two components: a) the study of East Asian languages (Chinese—Mandarin and Classical, and Japanese), and b) the study of East Asian cultures through a multi-disciplinary approach (Religious Studies, History, Literature, Cinema, Economics, International Development Studies). A unique feature of the program is its focus on the intellectual legacy of East Asian cultures, introduced through the study of texts and ideas in the historical and cultural contexts that shaped them. The rationale for this focus is a belief that just as East Asian economies are having a global impact beyond the East Asian region, intellectual beliefs and cultural habits will challenge hitherto global presuppositions regarding accepted practices and habits of thought.

The EALC program is administered through the Department of Religion & Culture. Graduates who are interested in careers related to East Asia in fields such as education, government, and business benefit greatly from courses in East Asian Languages & Cultures.

From essential training in project management and business writing, to web security, information architecture, and network administration this program develops a complete skill set for IT professionals. Graduates gain experience with a wide variety of web programming technologies (including HTML, CSS, and JavaScript) and PHP programming.

OBJECTIVES

• Develop hands-on skills in web development applications and programming languages such as HTML, CSS, XML, JavaScript, PHP, APS.net, and Java;
• Apply Adobe Photoshop to the visual design of Websites;
• Gain a solid understanding of best practices in search engine optimization (SEO);
• Create web pages in past, current, and emerging standards using HTML, XHTML, CSS, and XML
• Create rich multimedia files using Flash
• Use, edit and customize Dreamweaver and a variety of content management systems including Wordpress, Drupal, and Joomla for agile web development purposes;
• Plan, design, and create relational database systems;
• Understand TCP/IP and Networking in general to help trouble shoot issues and design solutions to potential performance problems;
• Gain an understanding of security problems in order to install, set-up, and secure a Web server.

Urban and Inner-City Studies is an interdisciplinary Major concerned with the examination of the city as a dynamic environment. Our unique location serves as a gateway for north end residents to enter the University of Winnipeg and as a place for the larger UWinnipeg student body to connect to and learn from the north end community. The program combines a traditional urban studies focus with courses that examine various aspects of the inner city, such as the urban Aboriginal experience, the immigrant and refugee experience, and the role of women. In Canada, cities continue to be centres of great challenge: from managing suburban growth to promoting inner-city revitalization; from responding to the opportunities and concerns created by rapidly changing demographics, to those created by globalization and socio-economic change. Cities are also home to increased concentrations of poverty and social and political exclusion. The Urban and Inner-City Studies program provides an opportunity to examine the political, economic, social and spatial context of these and many other important aspects of urban change from an interdisciplinary perspective.

The Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree offered through the Department of Business and Administration is designed for students who wish to pursue a career in business, in the private, public or non-profit sectors. We nurture socially conscience business leaders and entrepreneurs that are capable of adapting to the ever-changing needs of the modern business world.

The Business and Administration program develops critical thinking, analytic and decision-making abilities, oral and written communication skills, and the self-confidence to effectively apply these skills. Some courses in the program are taught using the case method, a simulation of real business situations from the perspective of the actual decision-maker. Computer-based simulations, experiential exercises, guest speakers, and field trips are also used to connect course material to the business world.  A new co-op work study program allows students to add career real work experience to their UW Degree. The interdisciplinary Disability Studies program offers B.A. options at the three-year, four-year, and honours level. Disability Studies is cross-disability (all disabilities rather than one), intersectional (disability in conjunction with race, gender, class, ethnicity, sexuality, etc.), and based in the social model of disability rather than the bio-medical model. From this perspective a lack of ramps is considered disabling, not the fact that someone uses a wheelchair.

The focus of the Disability Studies program at the University of Winnipeg is the critical analysis of disability in society. This includes the study of disability as a social, cultural, historical, and political construction. Students are encouraged to examine a wide range of topics such as human rights, ethics, social movements, theory, family, sexuality, employment, socialization, aging, education, international development, and gender issues.
