With a broad foundation of PR and marketing-specific knowledge, this program emphasizes best practices, tackles current and emerging issues, and develops the skill set to be a leader in the field.

Objectives & Outcomes

• Identify, analyze and influence organizational objectives, communications strategies and key interest groups
• Guide management on key business and policy decisions
• Develop public relations strategies that create awareness and favourable perception, and/or promote your products and services and set measurable objectives from which to evaluate their effectiveness
• Build collegial and cooperative relationships with a variety of public interest groups, internal and external clients, and the media
• Design and implement a media relations strategy expanding your visibility in the community
• Analyze consume buying patterns, employ marketing tools and research methodologies to determine environmental and competitive factors affecting products and services, and develop new products and/or services meriting consumer interest and increasing market share
• Master public relations communications writing template including: a well-tooled press kit, news releases, annual reports, newsletters, brochure content, and personality profiles
• Plan and direct the crisis and change management process
• Coordinate and prepare material for internal and external promotional publications, including planning articles, editing copy, supervising print preparation, distributing publications
• Gain an understanding of digital communication technologies, their impact in traditional approaches to public relations and marketing, and how to adapt print-based collaterals for this new medium
• Exercise sound financial decision-making and budgeting skills

The four-year BBA prepares students for managerial work and also for further study in business administration such as an MBA or other graduate degree program.  The four-year degree is equivalent to a Bachelor of Commerce at other Canadian universities.

The four-year BBA allows students the option of completing the program under the General Stream or choosing one of four Subject Specific Concentrations.  The four concentrations are: Accounting, Marketing, International Business and Human Resource Management & Organizational Behaviour. 

Under the General Stream, the program requires students to complete 120 credit hours, 57 of which are in Business and Administration.  The total hours requirement is the same for students pursuing a specific concentration, however the Business and Administration component of the degree increases to 66 credit hours. 

In the department of Modern Languages and Literatures, we offer the 3 or 4-year BA (Major or Combined Major) in German Studies with challenging courses where you will discuss topics of current interest, reflect on problems of the modern world, explore the culture of Germany, Austria and Switzerland and read literary and other texts dealing with the social and political issues of our time.

From the beginning to the advanced level, we offer up-to-date language instruction in an intimate learning environment. As you develop your command of oral and written German, you will also develop the cultural understanding that is needed in the global community through the study of literary and other texts.

Students without any previous knowledge of German can begin here with GERM-1001(6). If you have some prior knowledge, you can meet with a departmental advisor to select the appropriate level of course.

To major in German, you must take one required course, GERM-2109(3) Advanced Intermediate German I, as well as a set number of courses at the 3000-level. If you do not wish to major, but simply to pursue German studies out of interest, you are also welcome in our courses. Contact a departmental advisor to determine the right level for you.

he 4-Year BA allows flexibility of choice for students who want to sample a wide variety of courses; to develop a stronger understanding of language, literature, and culture; and to strengthen their reading and writing skills and their powers of critical thinking. This degree provides knowledge and practical skills that are assets in everyday life and in almost any career. Critical readers and writers are required in professions such as law, public service, business, medicine and politics. More directly, the study of English can lead to careers in teaching or careers that involve writing, such as news reporting, publishing, business advertising, and public relations.

Because this program offers much freedom of choice, it is important for students to think carefully about their interests and goals when choosing courses. Master the analytical framework and essential project management tools for budgeting, procuring, scoping, modeling, measuring, and reporting. This program equips graduates with the essential skills of project management and is aligned with the knowledge requirements of the Project Management Professional (PMP)® and Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM)® industry-recognized certifications.

(PMP and CAPM are internationally recognized designations offered by the Project Management Institute (PMI)

Program Outcomes

• Create and execute project work plans, define project scope and deliverables, determine project resources and staffing requirements, set project milestones, develop budget proposals, and successfully close a variety of projects.
• Gain a thorough understanding of the procurement life cycle including contract (tort) laws, potential legal issues, the step-by-step methodology for developing and managing procurement specifications, documents and contracts, and best practices for the vendor selection process.
• Create a project management communication plan that builds effective stakeholder and project team communication, and gain familiarity with a variety of project reporting tools and communication templates for communication purposes throughout the project life cycle.
• Manage change in project scope, create comprehensive risk profiles, and identify and develop mitigation and avoidance strategies that protect against a variety of liabilities and damage to organizational business interests.
• Foster a dynamic team environment built on collaborative relationships, clearly define group roles and responsibilities of the project team, and constructively and proactively manage conflict in order to avoid potential harm to the project and/or project team.
• Utilize project management technologies and analytics to streamline and ease process.
• Will help prepare students to write the Project Management Professional (PMP) or Certified Associate Project Management (CAPM) designation examinations.

The interdisciplinary Disability Studies program offers B.A. options at the three-year, four-year, and honours level. Disability Studies is cross-disability (all disabilities rather than one), intersectional (disability in conjunction with race, gender, class, ethnicity, sexuality, etc.), and based in the social model of disability rather than the bio-medical model. From this perspective a lack of ramps is considered disabling, not the fact that someone uses a wheelchair.

The focus of the Disability Studies program at the University of Winnipeg is the critical analysis of disability in society. This includes the study of disability as a social, cultural, historical, and political construction. Students are encouraged to examine a wide range of topics such as human rights, ethics, social movements, theory, family, sexuality, employment, socialization, aging, education, international development, and gender issues.

In the broadest sense, sociology is the study of human interactions and inter-relations, their conditions and consequences

By utilizing a combination of theory, research, and lived experience, sociologists explore human behaviour as it occurs over time and across cultures. They ask questions such as: Why is there poverty? Is there a relationship between delinquency and social class? How do immigrants manage new and diverse experiences? What effect will an aging population have on society? How can class, sex, gender, age, and ethnicity be understood as part of social life?

In The University of Winnipeg's Sociology programme, you will investigate and analyze how various groups and organizations are structured, their purposes, and how they function. You will study how and why they change, and the effects of these changes on society.

The currency, variety, and depth of courses in this discipline allow students to develop a sound understanding of how the social world works, and how this knowledge can be applied to a diversity of pursuits.

The Sociology Department offers 3-year BA, 4-year BA, and Honours degree programmes plus a Minor and Research Methods Certificate. A student whose Major lies in a different area may still study Sociology as an elective. Courses in Sociology complement such areas as Politics, History, Psychology, Education, Criminal Justice, Women's and Gender Studies, and Environmental Studies. Some interdisciplinary majors also require certain Sociology courses as part of their programmes.

An undergraduate degree in Sociology enables one to pursue a variety of vocations in areas such as social welfare, criminal justice, government, research, industrial relations, and administration. Provincial and federal government offices hire a large number of persons with a Sociology background. For those who wish to proceed to studies at the graduate level, a career in university teaching and research is also an option.

Applied computer science is the study of how and where computers work. It includes designing hardware and software, building database and operating systems, and programming for the internet. UWinnipeg’s program covers each of these areas, giving you an understanding of how they connect to create vast networks. In the four-year major, you’ll gain practical experience and build teamwork skills as you take on a team-based software project for a local IT company.

Applied Computer Science - Health Informatics Stream
The Health Informatics(HI) stream provides students with more focused courses in Health information needs, infrastructure, standards, and jurisdiction. This stream has been designed in close cooperation with Manitoba e-Health. The HI stream includes upper year courses to address specific needs of the Health industry, e.g., Health Care information requirements and standards, regulatory environment, clinical terminologies, standards and professional practice. The HI stream complements offerings of the ACS department, and gives students flexibility of combining all three areas of IT, Business, and Health.

As of May 2016, students will be able to register in this Specialization and it will be noted on their transcripts.

The Screen and Cultural Studies Specialization focuses not only on literary texts, but also on cinematic, media, and cultural texts. Courses in this area reflect an interest in literary and cultural history; literary and cinematic forms, movements, and genres; cultural and critical theory; audience and reception studies; and the intersections between literature, film and other forms of cultural production.

Students interested in registering in this specialization should consult a faculty advisor prior to Registration. The 2016-17 faculty advisor is Dr. Andrew Burke (a.burke@uwinnipeg.ca).

All students are welcome to take courses in this area, whether they choose the specialization or not.

he 4 Year BA in Indigenous Studies is more appropriate than the 3 Year BA in Indigenous Studies for preparing the student for graduate school. It allows flexibility of choice for students who want to sample a wide variety of courses; to develop a stronger understanding of Indigenous issues, peoples, and policies; and who wish to develop their skills in critical reading, writing, and thinking. Students will gain knowledge on Indigenous cultures, particularly Canada, much of it wish can be applicable in work situations in band, provincial, national and international settings as well as with non-profit and for-profit organizations.  It can be successful paired with any number of other majors – Indigenous Studies and Criminal Justice; Indigenous Studies and Politics, for example.
