Biology is a broad discipline, which includes the subject areas of botany, zoology, microbiology, cell biology, ecology, and genetics. It examines all life forms from the simple to the complex, and is an ideal partner to study in chemistry, physics, and mathematics. If you have an aptitude for science and possess a keen desire to understand the living world, you will find the study of biology very rewarding.

At The University of Winnipeg, we teach a wide range of courses and offer active research programs in botany ecology, forest ecology, mosquito biology, evolutionary genetics, molecular biology, evolutionary physiology, soil microbiology and remediation, limnology, bioinformatics, genomics, dendrochronology, behavioural biology of birds, effects of UV radiation on the environment, and cell biology.

Biology can be explored in several different programs of study at The University of Winnipeg which can lead to a Bachelor of Science degree (3-year, 4-year, or Honours).

The Bachelor of Business Administration degree offered through the Department of Business and Administration is designed for students who wish to pursue a career in business, or in the public or non-profit sectors. Our aim is to graduate socially and ethically responsible students capable of succeeding in a rapidly changing world. The Business and Administration program develops critical thinking, analytic and decision-making abilities, oral and written communication skills, and the self-confidence to effectively apply these skills.

The 4-year BBA offers a General Stream as well as four Concentration Areas: Accounting, Marketing, International Business and Human Resource Management & Organizational Behaviour. The 4-year BBA prepares students for managerial work in many industries and is a solid foundation for graduate business degree programs

Statisticians use their expertise in agricultural research, health care research, quality control and actuarial work. In the face of uncertainty, statisticians use data to make predictions about sales, product demand, weather forecasts and product quality.  Statisticians design and analyze the results of clinical trials to study the safety and effectiveness of new medications or to compare cancer treatments.  Almost every government agency employs statisticians.  They work with specialists such as economists, biologists, chemists, and doctors to assist in the design of experiments and the analysis of research data. Statisticians are highly employable with the majority working for private corporations or government departments and agencies.

Democracy began in Greece. The Roman Empire rose and fell. There were extraordinary achievements in art, literature, and philosophy in both Greece and Rome. All this is highlighted by the legacies of great writers such as Plato, Sophocles, Virgil, and Cicero. Ancient history is surprisingly pervasive in today's cultures, religions, movies, literature, politics, journalism, and advertising. If you have a desire to understand our modern world, studying Classics is an ideal way to begin.

Classics is the study of Greek and Roman culture, society, and history through a variety of disciplinary approaches: archaeology, philology (the study of Latin and ancient Greek), literature, art history, social history, political history and thought, philosophy, religion and mythology.

If you enjoy thinking about life’s big questions, you might be a natural philosopher. Philosophy engages in disciplined and imaginative thinking about the philosophical questions common to all humans by studying the works of great philosophers. Through analysis and discussion, you’ll learn how to think critically, and understand the origins of the ideas that influence us today.

Philosophy is literally the love of wisdom. Rather than studying a particular aspect of human history or culture, philosophy takes a step back and tries to understand the nature of all inquiry. Students of philosophy examine fundamental beliefs about who we are and the world we live in – beliefs most people take to be true but never examine systematically and critically. Philosophers consider such questions as: What is the meaning of life? How should I live my life? Why be moral? What is the best form of government? Are human beings immortal? Does God exist? What is knowledge? Does the world appear to us as it really is? What makes something right, or good, or beautiful?

If coming to an understanding of the human condition is the goal of a liberal arts education, then philosophy is essential to it. But philosophy also has a practical side, which we see whenever we debate social and political questions concerning the environment and our obligations to future generations, the distribution of wealth and opportunity in society, gender equity, the relationship between science and religion, and so on. Philosophy helps us to identify and defend what is most valuable to us.

The UW Philosophy Program prides itself on being small and student-focused; this is a place where you can work closely with professors and other students in small classes, reading great philosophers from the past, and thinking and writing about the big questions.

We have an excellent record of placing our students in graduate programs in Canada and the United States as well as overseas.

Kinesiology is the art and science of human movement from a psychological, sociological, biological, mechanical and physiological perspective. Professionals in the field of Kinesiology are interested in enhancing sport performance; the promotion of physical literacy; the technical and tactical aspects of coaching; the short and long term effects of exercise; and the impact of physical activity on society. 

A bachelor degree in Kinesiology prepares students for a variety of career opportunities in areas such as sport administration, health and physical activity promotion,  adapted physical activity, senior’s  fitness and wellbeing and children’s physical literacy  This degree also prepares students to pursue further education at the graduate level.

The objective of the Dance Program Steam is to prepare you for graduate equivalent training and /or professional work in performance, teaching, or choreography. This program is offered jointly with the Professional Program of the School of Contemporary Dancers; entrance to the Professional Program of the School of Contemporary Dancers is by audition. Once admission is obtained, you must also apply for admission to The University of Winnipeg.

Theatre and Film – one of the largest in Canada – includes the opportunity to obtain a Bachelor of Arts in one of six different areas of study: Acting and Directing, Design, Drama in Education, Filmmaking, Playwriting, Stage Management or Production. The Department also offers a BA (Honours) in Acting, Directing, Design, Playwriting, and Stage Management and Production.  Your coursework will encompass a full range of practical and theoretical study, and will prepare you for an exciting career in the arts.

As of May 2016, students will be able to register in this Specialization and it will be noted on their transcripts.

The Screen and Cultural Studies Specialization focuses not only on literary texts, but also on cinematic, media, and cultural texts. Courses in this area reflect an interest in literary and cultural history; literary and cinematic forms, movements, and genres; cultural and critical theory; audience and reception studies; and the intersections between literature, film and other forms of cultural production.

Students interested in registering in this specialization should consult a faculty advisor prior to Registration. The 2016-17 faculty advisor is Dr. Andrew Burke ([email protected]).

All students are welcome to take courses in this area, whether they choose the specialization or not.

The Applied Computer Science major is designed to prepare students in the following core areas: Programming Fundamentals (object-oriented, event driven, algorithms), Information Management (database systems, data modeling, data warehousing, relational databases, query languages), Software Engineering (software requirements and design, software process, software project management), Operating Systems, Net-Centric Computing (Internet programming, networks, security), Human Computer Interaction (GUI Design and Programming), Intelligent Systems (Machine Learning). Our team-oriented courses are meant to strengthen communication skills, experience group dynamics, and foster self-confidence. The 4-year major includes the development of a team-based software project for a local IT organization. Our program will help develop analytical thinking and applied skills by blending theoretical and practical aspects of computer science. The Applied Computer Science major is designed to provide an excellent basis for graduate studies in either computer science or applied computing.
