 The East Asian region constitutes one of the most dynamic and intellectually rich regions in the world. The impact of East Asian economic development has been keenly felt in recent decades and the region has a major impact on world affairs. The legacy of East Asian history, religious and social values, literatures, etc., is a major factor in current affairs in the region, and this legacy will continue to shape our global future.

The EALC program is devoted to the study of East Asian cultures. The program introduces students to East Asian cultures and societies through two components: a) the study of East Asian languages (Chinese—Mandarin and Classical, and Japanese), and b) the study of East Asian cultures through a multi-disciplinary approach (Religious Studies, History, Literature, Cinema, Economics, International Development Studies). A unique feature of the program is its focus on the intellectual legacy of East Asian cultures, introduced through the study of texts and ideas in the historical and cultural contexts that shaped them. The rationale for this focus is a belief that just as East Asian economies are having a global impact beyond the East Asian region, intellectual beliefs and cultural habits will challenge hitherto global presuppositions regarding accepted practices and habits of thought.

The EALC program is administered through the Department of Religion & Culture. Graduates who are interested in careers related to East Asia in fields such as education, government, and business benefit greatly from courses in East Asian Languages & Cultures.

This degree focuses on the prevention and care of muscle, bone and joint injuries as they occur in sport, recreation, fitness and in the workplace. Students will learn to assess the cause and severity of an injury and provide the most effective rehabilitation and return to sport/recreation/work protocol.

This degree investigates living systems by combining the knowledge and methodologies of biochemistry, cell biology, genetics, and microbiology with those of the physical sciences. A degree in Biochemistry will prepare you for work in vario Biochemistry is an interdisciplinary program which combines Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Genetics, and Microbiology with the techniques of the physical sciences to investigate living systems.

Through this program, you will gain a thorough understanding of the molecular aspects of the structure, function, and metabolism of prokaryotes, animals, and plants. You will also obtain experience in up-to-date laboratory techniques and procedures.

This is one of the most exciting areas of science at this time and students will be kept abreast of advances in the field and their impact on humans and other life forms.

The University of Winnipeg offers three Biochemistry Degrees: B.Sc. (3-yr), B.Sc. (4-yr), and B.Sc. (Honours). As a graduate, you will be well qualified to work in university, government, and other research laboratories or in the pharmaceutical and food industries. Graduates with a 4-Year B.Sc. or B.Sc. The Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree offered through the Department of Business and Administration is designed for students who wish to pursue a career in business, in the private, public or non-profit sectors. We nurture socially conscious business leaders and entrepreneurs that are capable of adapting to the ever-changing needs of the modern business world.

The Business and Administration program develops critical thinking, analytic and decision-making abilities, oral and written communication skills, and the self-confidence to effectively apply these skills. Some courses in the program are taught using the case method, a simulation of real business situations from the perspective of the actual decision-maker. Computer-based simulations, experiential exercises, guest speakers, and field trips are also used to connect course material to the business world.

The three-year BBA is an excellent complement to a major or degree in another field and is intended to be readily accessible as a part of a double degree program upon completion of additional coursework.

Statisticians use their expertise in agricultural research, health care research, quality control and actuarial work. In the face of uncertainty, statisticians use data to make predictions about sales, product demand, weather forecasts and product quality.  Statisticians design and analyze the results of clinical trials to study the safety and effectiveness of new medications or to compare cancer treatments.  Almost every government agency employs statisticians.  They work with specialists such as economists, biologists, chemists, and doctors to assist in the design of experiments and the analysis of research data. Statisticians are highly employable with the majority working for private corporations or government departments and agencies.

Are you interested in obtaining an education organized around questions of social justice, global citizenship and human rights? Consider our new major in Human Rights – the only one of its kind in Western Canada. Through this multidisciplinary program, you will have an opportunity to explore issues of human rights in a context defined by globalization. This major is offered through Global College.

The Health Informatics (HI) major provides students with more focused courses in Health information needs, infrastructure, standards, and jurisdiction. This stream has been designed in close cooperation with Manitoba e-Health. Sample courses include:

Criminal Justice at the University of Winnipeg focuses on different aspects of the police, courts, corrections and explores the social responses to crime and policies designed to ameliorate its effects. Criminal Justice is an interdisciplinary degree that provides our students with a strong social science degree developing critical thinking, writing, and research skills.

Increasingly, modern and progressive police forces, legal agencies, and correctional organizations are recruiting individuals with education in related areas such as criminal justice, and with good reason. Our program provides you with both the historical background and current research on the Canadian criminal justice system, gives you an overview of crime causation theories, and an understanding of the role of the law and its application in society. You will also gain insight into enduring debates in the justice system such as crime control versus due process, rehabilitation versus punishment, limits of state powers, wrongful convictions, difficulties confronting our Aboriginal peoples, victims rights, and how best to manage youth crime.

Our students typically obtain work in the criminal justice field. Many go into law enforcement careers with Canada Customs, the RCMP, Ontario Provincial Police, Winnipeg Police Service and other municipal forces such as those in Calgary, Edmonton and Toronto. Another large employer is Corrections, with work available in federal and provincial governments and private sector non-profit groups for Correctional Officers, Youth Workers, Parole Officers, Probation Officers, Caseworkers or general Counselors. Some work for private, non-profit human service agencies involving youth, addictions, crime prevention or general social services. A number of our best students go on to law school in Manitoba or other provinces, while some obtain graduate degrees. 

Student will study the interrelationship between human physiology and anatomy with respect to movement. The exercise science degree includes the understanding of the integration of structure and function of the human systems (e.g. musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, respiratory, endocrine, etc.) and the changes or adaptations causes by physical activity/exercise.
