Interdisciplinary Linguistics examines the complexities of language use in daily communication within various social and cultural contexts. You’ll gain an in-depth understanding of how language encodes meaning, and gain skills to write, read and speak with greater confidence, fluency and power.

The interdisciplinary field of Conflict Resolution Studies deals with the nature and dynamics of human conflict. It explores topics of violence, power, justice, peace, communication and culture, as well as personal, local, and global conflict. You can choose from courses in a variety of different subject areas, and complete a practicum program in either a local or international setting as part of your university education. This major is offered through Menno Simons College.

Economics analyzes how societies provide for their well-being, and examines the choices and tradeoffs that are made in the face of limited resources. You’ll study the competition and cooperation that arises among individuals, private organizations, and governments in the process of allocating scarce resources for a variety of different uses. Economics also offers insight into politics, law, history, environment, and development.

One may obtain the Economics Major through the 3-Year BA, the 4-Year BA or the BA Honours degree program. Some of the courses we offer are recommended for interdisciplinary programs, and it is common for other departments in the University to require or recommend certain Economics courses. The BA in Economics is highly recommended for students planning to go into law, accounting, or business studies.

The Department of Kinesiology and Applied Health at The University of Winnipeg is student-centred with small classes and labs and accessible professors. Our professors have expertise and research interests in areas that include adapted physical activity, physical activity and aging, sports nutrition, coaching, sport and exercise psychology, motor behaviour, exercise physiology, biomechanics and prevention, care and treatment of muscle, bone and joint injuries.

Professionals in the field of Kinesiology are interested in increasing physical activity participation, enhancing sport performance,development of physical literacy, the technical and tactical aspects of coaching, the short and long term effects of exercise and the effect of physical activity on society.

As of May 2016, students will be able to register in this Specialization and it will be noted on their transcripts.

The Screen and Cultural Studies Specialization focuses not only on literary texts, but also on cinematic, media, and cultural texts. Courses in this area reflect an interest in literary and cultural history; literary and cinematic forms, movements, and genres; cultural and critical theory; audience and reception studies; and the intersections between literature, film and other forms of cultural production.

Students interested in registering in this specialization should consult a faculty advisor prior to Registration. The 2016-17 faculty advisor is Dr. Andrew Burke ([email protected]).

All students are welcome to take courses in this area, whether they choose the specialization or not.

he 4 Year BA in Indigenous Studies is more appropriate than the 3 Year BA in Indigenous Studies for preparing the student for graduate school. It allows flexibility of choice for students who want to sample a wide variety of courses; to develop a stronger understanding of Indigenous issues, peoples, and policies; and who wish to develop their skills in critical reading, writing, and thinking. Students will gain knowledge on Indigenous cultures, particularly Canada, much of it wish can be applicable in work situations in band, provincial, national and international settings as well as with non-profit and for-profit organizations.  It can be successful paired with any number of other majors – Indigenous Studies and Criminal Justice; Indigenous Studies and Politics, for example.

Because this program offers much freedom of choice, it is important for students to think carefully about their interests and goals when choosing courses. Student will study the interrelationship between human physiology and anatomy with respect to movement. The exercise science degree includes the understanding of the integration of structure and function of the human systems (e.g. musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, respiratory, endocrine, etc.) and the changes or adaptations causes by physical activity/exercise. 

Applied Biology focuses on the study of molecular and cellular biology, and is designed to address the need for qualified biotechnologists in Manitoba. You’ll develop the necessary laboratory skills required for the job, and the theoretical background to expand investigation, troubleshoot, or take a leadership role in the laboratory. Choose from either a traditional program or a co-operative option, which includes three to four paid work terms, for a total of 12 months on-the-job work experience.

The three year major was designed primarily for students wishing to pursue a career in teaching. These students would take the required courses as per their chosen level they wish to teach in the school system (early, middle or senior years). In the third year of study, students would apply to the faculty of Education for a two year after degree. The student would have both a Bachelor of Physical and Health Education and a Bachelor of Education.

Some students choose to use the three year degree as an entry level degree to other professional degrees such as the Master degree in Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, Medicine and Physicians Assistant program to name a few. You should be aware that a three year degree is less competitive than a 4 year degree and most universities now offer four year degrees only.

How do the brain and nervous system control behaviour? This program provides you with an understanding of the integrated relationship between biology and psychology. In Biopsychology you’ll develop a strong understanding of the structure and function of the nervous system as you explore the relationship between the nervous system and behaviour.
