Welcome to the History of Art programme at the University of Winnipeg. We are a dedicated group of scholars committed to the study of art, broadly defined, as it reveals the past and informs the future. Drawing on the experience of our scholars, the expertise of local curators and a rewarding relationship with the local arts community, together we are able to deliver a strong, vibrant and practical curriculum focussed on excellence, accessability and innovation.

Become a highly-skilled communicator ready to take on public relations in both corporate and not-for-profit environments. With a broad foundation of PR and marketing-specific knowledge, this program emphasizes best practices, tackles current and emerging issues, and develops the skill set to be a leader in the field.

Objectives & Outcomes

• Identify, analyze and influence organizational objectives, communications strategies and key interest groups
• Guide management on key business and policy decisions
• Develop public relations strategies that create awareness and favourable perception, and/or promote your products and services and set measurable objectives from which to evaluate their effectiveness
• Build collegial and cooperative relationships with a variety of public interest groups, internal and external clients, and the media
• Design and implement a media relations strategy expanding your visibility in the community
• Analyze consume buying patterns, employ marketing tools and research methodologies to determine environmental and competitive factors affecting products and services, and develop new products and/or services meriting consumer interest and increasing market share
• Master public relations communications writing template including: a well-tooled press kit, news releases, annual reports, newsletters, brochure content, and personality profiles
• Plan and direct the crisis and change management process
• Coordinate and prepare material for internal and external promotional publications, including planning articles, editing copy, supervising print preparation, distributing publications
• Gain an understanding of digital communication technologies, their impact in traditional approaches to public relations and marketing, and how to adapt print-based collaterals for this new medium
• Exercise sound financial decision-making and budgeting skills

In addition to discipline-specific writing courses at the introductory level (please see Course Listings for more information), the Department offers a 4-Year BA with a Major in Rhetoric and Communications. This program emphasizes the interpretation, evaluation, production, and precise editing of messages for a range of audiences, media, and purposes. Students in the Major practice writing in a variety of genres and read contemporary non-fiction, analyze visual and verbal arguments, trace the impact of print and electronic media on western culture, and—through the study of theory and close attention to textual practices—examine how ideology imprints itself on discourse. Students with a BA in Rhetoric and Communications can enter graduate studies in such fields as Communications, Composition, Media Studies, and Rhetoric. They are also well prepared for public- and private-sector careers that depend on advanced analytical and communicative skills, especially in writing.

As of May 2016, students will be able to register in this Specialization and it will be noted on their transcripts.

The Screen and Cultural Studies Specialization focuses not only on literary texts, but also on cinematic, media, and cultural texts. Courses in this area reflect an interest in literary and cultural history; literary and cinematic forms, movements, and genres; cultural and critical theory; audience and reception studies; and the intersections between literature, film and other forms of cultural production.

All students are welcome to take courses in this area, whether they choose the specialization or not.

The Information Systems (IS) stream is aimed at students interested in focusing on information and business needs of IT industry. The new stream is intended to prepare students in information oriented courses, and also in system and Internet based technologies. Sample courses include: Internet programming, database design and development, software requirements and design, telecommunications, business application systems and eCommerce. One advantage of this stream is that students can easily combine this stream as a double major with another department for a Bachelors degree in arts or science.

Statisticians use their expertise in agricultural research, health care research, quality control and actuarial work. In the face of uncertainty, statisticians use data to make predictions about sales, product demand, weather forecasts and product quality.  Statisticians design and analyze the results of clinical trials to study the safety and effectiveness of new medications or to compare cancer treatments.  Almost every government agency employs statisticians.  They work with specialists such as economists, biologists, chemists, and doctors to assist in the design of experiments and the analysis of research data. Statisticians are highly employable with the majority working for private corporations or government departments and agencies.

Combining aspects of anthropology with biological and physical sciences, Bioanthropology program teaches you to examine human biological systems of the past and present. You’ll gain understanding of comparative anatomy, cellular biology, and methods in human and primate evolution as you obtain experience in current laboratory techniques and procedures

If you enjoy thinking about life’s big questions, you might be a natural philosopher. Philosophy engages in disciplined and imaginative thinking about the philosophical questions common to all humans by studying the works of great philosophers. Through analysis and discussion, you’ll learn how to think critically, and understand the origins of the ideas that influence us today.

Philosophy is literally the love of wisdom. Rather than studying a particular aspect of human history or culture, philosophy takes a step back and tries to understand the nature of all inquiry. Students of philosophy examine fundamental beliefs about who we are and the world we live in – beliefs most people take to be true but never examine systematically and critically. Philosophers consider such questions as: What is the meaning of life? How should I live my life? Why be moral? What is the best form of government? Are human beings immortal? Does God exist? What is knowledge? Does the world appear to us as it really is? What makes something right, or good, or beautiful?

If coming to an understanding of the human condition is the goal of a liberal arts education, then philosophy is essential to it. But philosophy also has a practical side, which we see whenever we debate social and political questions concerning the environment and our obligations to future generations, the distribution of wealth and opportunity in society, gender equity, the relationship between science and religion, and so on. Philosophy helps us to identify and defend what is most valuable to us.

The UW Philosophy Program prides itself on being small and student-focused; this is a place where you can work closely with professors and other students in small classes, reading great philosophers from the past, and thinking and writing about the big questions.

We have an excellent record of placing our students in graduate programs in Canada and the United States as well as overseas.

Developmental Studies (DS) is a distinct field that draws on the integration of the perspectives and methods of many disciplines to provide a coherent analysis of the biological, environmental, and social factors that influence both individual and group development. As such, it has specific relevance to a growing number of occupations and professions, notably child care, gerontology, and family studies.

The Developmental Studies Program is an interdisciplinary major composed of offerings from a variety of Departments and programs. The DS program includes courses from Anthropology, Biology, Business and Administration, Conflict Resolution Studies, Education, English, Kinesiology and Applied Health, Politics, Psychology, Sociology, and Statistics.

Developmental Studies is well known for

• early learning research and publications;
• developing leaders and managers in inclusive early-childhood care and education;
• an established degree program in early childhood management and leadership, that is CCEPAC approved;
• its unique articulation program with Red River College and Université de Saint-Boniface;
• creating new advancement opportunities for early-childhood care and education professionals;
• promoting broad understanding of the crucial role played by quality early-childhood care and education programs in human development, family stability, and community well being; and
• Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition for adult learners.

The University of Winnipeg builds the leadership capacity of early-care and education leaders by drawing upon the expertise of the interdisciplinary faculty on staff at the University of Winnipeg and the resources of leaders in the wider childcare community. We prepare leaders who will advance the quality and standing of early care and education—regionally, provincially and even nationally.
