Horticulture is the culture of vegetables, fruits, herbs, flowers, turf grass, and ornamental plants. The settings for this culture may extend from the back yard grower to large commercial operations, such as green houses, orchards, vegetable farms, turfgrass operations, forestry seedling nurseries, garden centers, golf courses, municipal parks, landscaping, and landscape maintenance firms.

People working in the horticulture industry should have a strong interest in plants and like the hands on aspect of the work. Depending on the scope of work, many of the positions within the industry involve working outside in a variety of weather conditions.

Highlights
Cultivate a career in horticulture. Learn landscape maintenance techniques, equipment operation, pest management, landscape design and construction, plant identification, pruning techniques, plant propagation methods and basic irrigation hydraulics. On-site landscape development gives you hands-on experience to complement your coursework.

The Management Diploma is a two-year program that helps graduates develop key employment skills in areas such as oral and written communications, problem-solving, accounting, marketing, human relations, economics, law, information systems, and business ethics and readies them for entry-level general administration and sales positions.

Those who complete just the first year will be awarded a Business Foundations Certificate. This qualifies graduates for some entry-level positions, but they are encouraged to continue their education part-time or online if possible.

If you enjoy working with people and are a creative person with good communication skills, this program could be for you.

Shift into leadership. Our Master of Nursing program offers you the knowledge, skills and abilities needed to contribute to the evolution of health policy. Through critical and creative approaches, you will be equipped to influence and support innovative change.

Our flexible, accessible graduate program offers a variety pathways to admission. You can choose core course options in Leadership and Managing Change in Health Care and Indigenous Health Leadership. Two program options: same core content, choose your specialization
Both two-year programs provide graduates with a broad knowledge of the business environment and specialized environmental economics and sustainability knowledge. In addition to the shared core content, each program offers a specialization:

• Master in Environmental Economics and Management (MEEM)
• Master of Science in Environmental Economics and Management (MScEEM)

Program structure

• Both degrees are divided into two parts:
  • Year One: Graduate Diploma in Business Administration (GDBA)
  • Year Two: MEEM or MScEEM degree

Year 1 Graduate Diploma in Business Administration - two semesters
The purpose of the Graduate Diploma in Business Administration (GDBA) is to ensure all students, regardless of their educational backgrounds, have the business knowledge and skills to successfully apply the economic sustainable management principles learned. Students must complete the six courses in the GDBA to be admitted to the masters degree, but may receive a course waiver for some or all of the GDBA courses based on their previous academic record. Applicants with a four-year business degree from an acceptable institution may be eligible to proceed directly to the masters degree.

Year 2 Master of Science in Environmental Economics and Management (MScEEM)
Prepares graduates to make major contributions to the field of economic sustainable management. They acquire management skills, specialized knowledge in the emerging area of sustainability as well as important academic and applied research expertise through the completion of a graduate thesis or project. Completion of a thesis or project can serve as a stepping stone to a PhD program and an eventual career in academia and/or consulting.

One-year option

• If you’ve recently graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration or Bachelor of Commerce, you may be eligible to enter directly into the second year of the program and complete your graduate degree in 12 months.

Associate diplomas recognize the achievements of students who have completed two years of academic work. They are of particular value to students who want to save money by completing the lower level requirements of a business degree in their local community before transferring to another university such as Simon Fraser University or University of British Columbia for third and fourth year. Associate diplomas are also intended to recognize the accomplishments of student who for financial, family, work or academic reasons are not able to complete a full four-year business degree.

The Associate of Commerce and Business Administration Diploma is awarded to students who have completed the lower level requirements of the Bachelor of Business Administration degree. Students may substitute General Education Electives for MATH 1170 – Calculus for Business and Economics and ECON 2330 – Economics and Business Statistics 2.

Graduates of the Associate of Commerce and Business Administration Diploma may return to TRU in the future to complete the Bachelor of Business Administration and receive full credit for courses taken in the associate diploma.

Bachelor of Tourism Management
Be exposed to the latest topics and best practices, taught by experienced academics and industry professionals. Be immersed in a program with students from all over the world, in courses that blend theory with real-world experiences. Co-operative education opportunities offer relevant, hands-on learning.

In first and second year, you’ll take foundation courses in applied tourism, management practices and general tourism studies, followed by courses in third and fourth year that offer an enhanced understanding of tourism management and tourism as a social phenomenon.

In upper years, students take a combination of core courses and theme-based electives covering three interdisciplinary areas: global perspectives, understanding tourism culture and place, and designing and providing experiences.

Program Highlights

The focus of the BTM is on key issues in local, regional, national and international tourism, with opportunities for international experience through Study Abroad and field schools. Learn the skills and confidence to develop your own tourism business and fill the growing need for managers in the tourism industry.

Double Degree
Spend your fourth year in the Netherlands with our double-degree option.

The risks of owning a small business are significant and the hours are generally quite long, but there is no better feeling than that which comes from launching a successful new business venture and being respected by one’s fellow citizens for making a contribution to the local community. Opportunities for new venture creation in Canada are very good due to a vibrant economy, a stable political environment, and close proximity to the US market. For creative people with a strong work ethic and a lower aversion to risk, a career as an entrepreneur may be the right choice.

Entrepreneurship Majors will learn to research new business ideas, prepare formal business plans, secure initial financing, and manage small businesses on an on-going basis. After graduation, it is hoped that many students will start-up their own ventures after acquiring some valuable industry experience and saving needed equity capital. A few will also return home to work in the family firm with the hope of eventually taking over.

Of interest to students who have a non-business degree, and who want to return to university for one or two years to acquire a specialty in a functional area of business or economics in order to enhance their employment opportunities. Students with a first degree in business, but who want to change their area of focus, may complete a post-baccalaureate diploma as well.

Prepare yourself for a vital role in child care with coursework that provides a mix of child development theory and hands-on experience, in both on-campus and community-based childcare programs. ECE includes three semesters of study, with specializations in Infant/Toddler and Special Needs available in the fourth semester.
