The International Business Major prepares students for positions as managers and entrepreneurs in the global economy. Program graduates may work as directors in an international subsidiary of a major multinational corporation or as overseas sales representatives or product managers. Those with backgrounds in finance may find work as loans officers for the Export Development Corporation (EDC) or as financial analysts with the global investing unit of a major financial institution.

International business professionals must develop a life-long commitment to learning about the world, its peoples, and their cultures. Associate diplomas recognize the achievements of students who have completed two years of academic work. They are of particular value to students who want to save money by completing the lower level requirements of a business degree in their local community before transferring to another university such as Simon Fraser University or University of British Columbia for third and fourth year. Associate diplomas are also intended to recognize the accomplishments of student who for financial, family, work or academic reasons are not able to complete a full four-year business degree.

The Associate of Commerce and Business Administration Diploma is awarded to students who have completed the lower level requirements of the Bachelor of Business Administration degree. Students may substitute General Education Electives for MATH 1170 – Calculus for Business and Economics and ECON 2330 – Economics and Business Statistics 2.

Graduates of the Associate of Commerce and Business Administration Diploma may return to TRU in the future to complete the Bachelor of Business Administration and receive full credit for courses taken in the associate diploma.

Students in the Visual Arts at Thompson Rivers University can have the best of two worlds: courses can be counted toward a Diploma and toward a Bachelor of Fine Arts and a Bachelor of Arts with a Minor in Visual Arts, or other university degrees at the same time. The Diploma allows students to sample a diverse selection of different media, such as drawing, painting, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture and multi-media to gain an introduction to contemporary art practices along with art history and theory. The Diploma is useful in a resume for job applications or entrance to academic programs that require some background theory and practice in visual arts.

The MBA focuses on producing managers and leaders who can meet these challenges with emphasis on decision making in an uncertain environment, interpersonal and communication skills, ethics and social responsibility, and globalization. An MBA can give you broad-based management skills to advance to leadership roles. The practical side of the program focuses on writing, editing, interviewing, taking photographs, and working with new technology to produce print and online publications. The theory side emphasizes media law, journalistic ethics, decision-making, and critical thinking.

Criminology prepares students for careers in policing, justice, victimology and law enforcement. Criminology is both a subject of academic study and a field of practice. Graduates of a Criminology degree will have extensive knowledge of the key social and psychological factors that lead to, and can prevent criminological and deviant behaviour. Criminology students develop many skills including:

Substantive skills

• Criminologists develop the ability to understand criminal and deviant behaviour at work in society so that they can better evaluate proposed changes or resistances to change.

Analytical skills

• Criminology provides the ability to identify the contributing parts of a problem and to evaluate proposals for change.
• Critical thinking skills
• Criminology students learn to synthesize existing theoretical knowledge, and research information, and the processes of evaluating arguments and solutions.
• Research and data analysis skills
• Criminology students learn how data are collected and analyzed, how data are used to test hypotheses, and how to evaluate the work presented in research studies and the popular media.

Communication skills

• Criminology courses provide practice in effective communication in written and oral forms. Students are encouraged to develop their ability to explain and interpret as well as to clarify and summarize.

Economics and politics is "the study of choices" and so is concerned with all areas of our lives. It provides rigorous analysis of many real world subjects: government institutions, taxes, unemployment, financial markets, international trade, development, and economic growth but also poverty, crime, pollution, healthcare, education, the environment and many other areas.

Study animals in an ecological and evolutionary context. Learn all aspects of biology before specializing in animal and ecological areas in marine and terrestrial environments. The program involves extensive field and laboratory experiences.

Developing the entrepreneurial abilities and spirit of Canadians is critical in generating a dynamic economy that can compete globally and provide a growing standard of living. The risks of owning a small business are significant and the hours are generally quite long, but there is no better feeling than that which comes from launching a successful new business venture and being respected by one’s fellow citizens for making a contribution to the local community. Opportunities for new venture creation in Canada are very good due to a vibrant economy, a stable political environment, and close proximity to the US market. For creative people with a strong work ethic and a lower aversion to risk, a career as an entrepreneur may be the right choice.

Entrepreneurship Majors will learn to research new business ideas, prepare formal business plans, secure initial financing, and manage small businesses on an on-going basis. After graduation, it is hoped that many students will start-up their own ventures after acquiring some valuable industry experience and saving needed equity capital. A few will also return home to work in the family firm with the hope of eventually taking over.

Power up your future as a software engineer today. Through our program, you will learn to apply engineering principles to computer software. You will gain technical knowledge and skills in how to design, develop, maintain, test and evaluate software. As you move through the program, your courses will include areas such as engineering, business, computing science and project management.

Software engineer grads do more than program. They bring creative solutions to manufacturing, transportation, health care, government and digital media. These sectors rely on computer tools and applications, which our grads manage.

Software engineering is the study of how software is built and maintained and includes project management and testing. Our students like the program’s practical, hands-on approach.

Co-op program:-
Co-operative education is a requirement of the degree. During your Co-op experience you will receive paid and relevant work experience, allowing you to apply theory learned in the classroom, explore interests related to the field of study and advance skills as a professional while strengthening your resumé. In the fourth year of study, students are required to complete two mandatory co-op work terms.

Our program is designed to meet the criteria of the Engineers Canada Accreditation Board. Graduates will meet all of the educational requirements for registration as a professional engineer through APEGBC. Up to 12 months of co-op work may count towards the work experience required for professional designation.
