In Political Studies, we consider the many ways in which we use power in human societies.

We examine the philosophic and practical aspects of the use and abuse of power, combining insights from both the humanities and social sciences. Our Political Studies program embraces both the social science and humanities aspects of political analysis, adding depth to your studies. As a student of political studies, you will deepen your understanding of political science and explore your rights and responsibilities as a citizen and Christian.

You will explore the organization of government and how this influences the amount and distribution of social and economic resources. In addition, you will develop an understanding of government institutions, legislative processes, foreign policy, international relations, and public law.

Our political studies program includes practicum courses, giving our students valuable experience. Our students have the option of studying at TWU’s Laurentian Leadership Centre and interning in Ottawa or at Parliament Hill, and participating in our Pre-Law Society or Model United Nations.

Linguistics is the study of language and how it’s used in society.

Our courses teach you the skills you need to learn and describe languages, even languages that do not have a written alphabet. These skills include the recognition and pronunciation of non-English speech sounds, alphabet formation, description of grammars, and systems of meaning and beliefs. Our courses are based on proven techniques drawn from decades of research in hundreds of languages.

As a student of Linguistics, you will have opportunities in the areas of translation, cross-cultural communication, international development (especially literacy programs), speech-language pathology, and teaching English as a second language.

Chemistry is known as the central science, because it interacts with all other sciences, and it explains the world around us.

A degree in chemistry can lead to a career in environmental science, nanotechnology, materials chemistry, sustainable and green chemistry, biotechnology, or a medical discipline.

Through our degree program, you will acquire theoretical principles and the laboratory skills you need for a career in chemistry, or a related career in which chemistry is an asset or requirement. As part of your chemistry studies, you may make aspirin in your introductory chemistry lab or test the pond water for compounds important in water quality.

Whether learning how to synthesize molecules, solving molecular structures, understanding the physical basis of chemical bonding, or understanding how a metal works when forming a mineral structure or in a catalytic biological enzyme, each class offers key principles and real-world applications. You will be trained by faculty who are experts in their individual fields and eager to share that expertise by mentoring students.

As a student in the Geography and Environment Department (GENV), you will examine some of the most significant issues facing our planet and its inhabitants, including climate change, species extinction, habitat fragmentation, urbanization, poverty, and development.

Our GENV programs combine the strengths of a variety of disciplines across two faculties: the Faculty of Social Science and Humanities (FHSS) and the Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences (FNAS). These combined strengths provide you with a holistic understanding of issues that cut across a variety of fields, opening up a wide range of employment opportunities.

Our campus’s close proximity to freshwater, mountain, saltwater, and island habitats, as well as urban, rural and agricultural areas means that you will gain a wealth of hands-on experience in environmental stewardship and management and community development practices. Our Geographic Information Systems (GIS) lab and expertise provides up-to-date skills training in GIS.

You will learn from professors with extensive expertise in diverse fields such as ecological restoration, sustainable agriculture, marine biology, landscape ecology, chemical ecology, urban and regional planning, resource management, physical and human geography, and geomatics. Also, the faculty and staff engaged in running the GENV programs provide leadership in the local community and more globally in their scholarship and in more practical ways as they approach the task of serving humanity and creation stewardship.

Our courses are presented from historical and contemporary perspectives and challenge you to learn about the changing dynamics of the international society. You will learn from the expertise of specialized professors about topics such as war, foreign policy, globalization, economic disparity, and international development.

As part of the major, we encourage our students to study abroad in order to put what they learn in the classroom into practice. There are also many ways to get involved on campus, including student-led initiatives such as TWU’s Refugee Awareness Campaign or participation in Model United Nations.

International Studies majors typically find employment in international non-governmental organizations (NGOs), government, law, missions, or in providing other services in the global community.

The MA in Leadership degrees are offered with two foundational curriculum themes – Transformational Servant Leadership and Values-Based Leadership. Examining the deeper motivations of human behaviour and understanding how you can impact people’s lives is part of the dynamic field of psychology.

Through systematic observation and research in our Psychology program, you will gain an understanding of human experience. As a student, you will explore all aspects of human behaviour and the thoughts, feelings, and motivations that underlie that behaviour, helping you to better understand people and how you can positively influence them.

Using a Christian worldview as the basis of interpretation, faculty members encourage you to investigate principles derived from research that apply to areas such as work, love, leisure, family, sexuality, value and meaning, spirituality, and relationships. Geographers work in a wide array of fields including community development and missions, urban and regional planning, population and statistical analysis, geographic information systems, computerized mapping and remote sensing, business, retail analysis and market research, environmental assessment and resource conservation, geophysical analysis, and natural science research. Graduates with geography degrees are in high demand. Significant employment opportunities exist within government, teaching, business, private sector consulting, and in non-governmental/non-profit organization. The reasons for this wide range of opportunities and the demand for trained geographers in the workplace are the unique spatial perspective, interdisciplinary skills, holistic approach, geospatial technologies, statistical analysis and other skills the geography graduate offers.
