As a student in the Geography and Environment Department (GENV), you will examine some of the most significant issues facing our planet and its inhabitants, including climate change, species extinction, habitat fragmentation, urbanization, poverty, and development.

Our GENV programs combine the strengths of a variety of disciplines across two faculties: the Faculty of Social Science and Humanities (FHSS) and the Faculty of Natural and Applied Sciences (FNAS). These combined strengths provide you with a holistic understanding of issues that cut across a variety of fields, opening up a wide range of employment opportunities.

Our campus’s close proximity to freshwater, mountain, saltwater, and island habitats, as well as urban, rural and agricultural areas means that you will gain a wealth of hands-on experience in environmental stewardship and management and community development practices. Our Geographic Information Systems (GIS) lab and expertise provides up-to-date skills training in GIS.

You will learn from professors with extensive expertise in diverse fields such as ecological restoration, sustainable agriculture, marine biology, landscape ecology, chemical ecology, urban and regional planning, resource management, physical and human geography, and geomatics. Also, the faculty and staff engaged in running the GENV programs provide leadership in the local community and more globally in their scholarship and in more practical ways as they approach the task of serving humanity and creation stewardship.

Students who graduate form the Kinesiology Stream within the School of Human Kinetics, have many professional opportunities including membership in BCAK (British Columbia Association of Kinesiologists), certification as fitness leaders, personal trainers, performance coaches and advancement into further studies in health, medicine, physiotherapy, exercise physiology, and more.

Within the Kinesiology Stream, there is an opportunity for students to specialize in strength and conditioning. This ‘specialization’ is recognized through the National Strength and Condtioning Association (NSCA) as an ‘Approved Educational Program (one of only 3 in Canada). Throughout the Kinesiology program, students are also prepared to write NSCA certification exams for CSCS – Certified Strength & Condtioning Specialist and CPT – Certified Personal Trainer.

Our students explore Jewish and Christian Scriptures, both historically and theologically, in order to gain an understanding of how these texts have profoundly shaped past and present communities of faith.

Led by our close-knit faculty of committed and active scholars in the Department of Religious Studies, our students are encouraged to broaden their understanding of Scripture and to investigate current critical issues within the discipline of Biblical Studies. Linguistics is the study of language and how it’s used in society.

Our courses teach you the skills you need to learn and describe languages, even languages that do not have a written alphabet. These skills include the recognition and pronunciation of non-English speech sounds, alphabet formation, description of grammars, and systems of meaning and beliefs. Our courses are based on proven techniques drawn from decades of research in hundreds of languages.

As a student of Linguistics, you will have opportunities in the areas of translation, cross-cultural communication, international development (especially literacy programs), speech-language pathology, and teaching English as a second language.

TWU¹s School of Human Kinetics is a certified training centre by the NSCA (The National Strength and Conditioning Association) and our faculty serve noted positions with the managing council of the Canadian Sports Psychology Association as well as the Board Canadian Sport Institute.

The Christianity and Culture program has a strong interdisciplinary approach that gives our students a broad understanding of the relationship of Christianity to western culture by educating students in the historic and living traditions of the Christian Church.

Our program prepares students for graduate theological studies and provides a solid foundation for students who desire to enter ministry. Through core biblical studies classes, our students explore the relationship between the historic Christian faith and contemporary values, issues, and institutions. Our students deepen their understanding of the world through electives such as Philosophy, English, or History.

A geography degree offers students the opportunity to tackle complex human and environmental problems with a skill set that emphasizes a combination of knowledge-building, critical thinking, informed problem solving, interdisciplinary learning, geospatial technologies and analysis, and hands-on solutions to positively impact people’s quality of life and their environments.

Geographers work in a wide array of fields including community development and missions, urban and regional planning, population and statistical analysis, geographic information systems, computerized mapping and remote sensing, business, retail analysis and market research, environmental assessment and resource conservation, geophysical analysis, and natural science research. Graduates with geography degrees are in high demand. Significant employment opportunities exist within government, teaching, business, private sector consulting, and in non-governmental/non-profit organization. The reasons for this wide range of opportunities and the demand for trained geographers in the workplace are the unique spatial perspective, interdisciplinary skills, holistic approach, geospatial technologies, statistical analysis and other skills the geography graduate offers.

As a sociology major, you will gain the knowledge and skills to understand people and contemporary culture.

Our exceptional faculty have specialized in culture, race and ethnicity, social inequality, family, religion, and social change. Our sociology students also have the option of completing the Human Services certificate program. This program has an applied focus in sociology, with opportunities to choose from a wide variety of practicums in helping professions. Practicums include areas in social service agencies that are governmental, non-governmental, profit or non-profit organizations, or faith-based organizations.

Sociology students may complete a semester at the Laurentian Leadership Centre in Ottawa, where they complete classes toward their degree while enjoying a rewarding internship.
