Why study Computing Science – Software Practice? (Specialization program)

This Specialization is for students who are interested in all aspects of building software. The program has a broad range of courses to develop depth in programming, algorithms, hardware, software design, user interfaces, project management, and business issues.

This program can only be taken as part of a BSc with Specialization degree.

Why take the BSc Specialization degree?

The Bachelor of Science Specialization degree provides a focused education in one program. You will take most of your courses in your main subject area, and are expected to maintain a higher standard of academic achievement. A Specialization degree can provide the background to help you proceed to a higher degree, but its primary function is to provide a comprehensive education at the undergraduate level.

This program can also be taken as part of a BSc Honors degree.

This program allows you to combine and balance your interests in mathematics with studies in computing science, and will be of interest to you if you wish to study the mathematical foundations of computing, algorithms, logic, or the application of modern mathematical theory to error-correcting codes and cryptography.

This program can only be taken as part of a BSc with Honors degree.

The BSc Psychology program focuses on how the brain functions and how we perceive, learn, and forget things. You’ll gain an understanding of areas like perception and motivation, behavior, and cognitive development, with emphasis on the physical, biological, and mathematical sciences. This program is designed to provide a broad view of science psychology and allows for customization and flexibility with courses and program direction.

Why take the BSc General degree?

• The Bachelor of Science General degree offers a wide variety of majors and minors, allowing you to create a diversified degree based on your interests. Majors must be in Science, but minors can also be from courses offered by Arts; Business; or Agriculture, Life and Environmental Sciences. You can also take a double major in Science.

Why take an Undeclared major?

If you are undecided, you may apply with an Undeclared major or minor. Please note that both a major and a minor are required for graduation from the BSc General degree. (Alternatively, you can select a double major, with no minor.) You are encouraged to make your selection within the first few years of university. You can only enter into an Undeclared major as part of a BSc General degree.

Why study Music? (Secondary Education)

Do you dream of becoming a Music teacher? Music (Wind Band) can be taken as a major or minor as part of a Bachelor of Secondary Education.

Areas of focus include Instrumental Ensemble, Aural and Keyboard Skills, Music Theory, Woodwind Techniques, Brass Techniques, Percussion Techniques, Choral Techniques and Pedagogy, Band Techniques, and Conducting.

You can also take this major as part of a Bachelor of Music / Bachelor of Education combined degree.

Our Secondary Education program in the Faculty of Education prepares you to pass on your love of learning and discovery in almost any subject to students in grades 7-12. You’ll choose two areas of specialization — a major and minor — allowing you to pursue your passion and customize your experience.

The Secondary Education program includes a five-week Introductory Professional Term (IPT) and a nine-week Advanced Professional Term (APT). You will typically teach in your Major subject in both your IPT and APT.

This degree is normally taken as a four-year program but can also be taken as an after-degree. Upon completion of this program, you will be recommended for teacher certification in Alberta.

Why study Physical Education? (Secondary Education)

• Do you dream of becoming a PhysEd teacher? Physical Education can be taken as a major or minor as part of a Bachelor of Secondary Education.
• Areas of focus include Physical Education and Sport, Health Education, Recreation and Leisure Studies, and Physical Activity.
• You can also take a Bachelor of Kinesiology / Bachelor of Education combined degree.

Sociology is the study of the social forces that shape various identities, relations, and practices, such as race, inequality, health, education, family, class, and culture. Our program offers courses on interrelated facets of social life, including gender and sexuality, race and racism, deviance and conformity, justice, religion, and natural and built environments. You will have the opportunity to learn from leading scholars who use real world examples, hands-on projects, and their own ongoing research to enliven and extend the classroom.

Leave a lasting mark on the environment with this four-year degree program. As a student, you will have the opportunity to:

• Develop solutions for environmental issues such as conservation of land, water and biodiversity or adaptation to climate change.
• Explore how interactions between science, society and the economy influence environmental management decisions.
• Participate in a three-week field school where you spend every day outside, learning by doing.
• Apply your knowledge and skills while completing a fourth-year project-based capstone course that examines issues faced by industry, government and environmental organizations.
• Join the Agrology profession (Alberta Institute of Agrologists) and take a leadership role as a professional agrologist in Alberta.
• Join students in the Northern ENCS Program and spend a semester at Yukon College in Whitehorse, getting hands on experience and credit towards your degree.

Learn how Aboriginal history, politics, and cultural values influence natural resource management. Graduate with two degrees in five years—Bachelor of Science in Environmental & Conservation Science and Bachelor of Arts in Native Studies .

Conservation Biology
Apply the principles of biology, ecology, social science, economics, and statistics to the conservation of species and landscapes.

Environmental Economics & Policy
Develop skills in the economics analysis and policy process associated with environmental issues.

Human Dimensions of Environmental Management
Use collective action, institutions, policy and management to address challenges in environmental/ natural resource management.

Land Reclamation
Develop the natural and social sciences to understand, assess, and minimize the impacts of human activities on natural resources, with an emphasis on soil, plant and water health.

Northern Systems
Develop solutions to issues such as global climate change, decreasing non-renewable energy resources, land use, changes in water quantity and quality, and wildlife conservation. Gain insight into northern and native studies content, reflecting northern environmental, economic, and social contexts.

Wildlife & Rangeland Management
Learn to manage soil, plant, and animal relationships on both private and public lands. Gain an understanding of grazing, intensive agriculture, forestry, and recreational activities.

• Do you dream of becoming a Social teacher? Social Studies can be taken as a major or minor as part of a Bachelor of Secondary Education.
• Areas of focus include Canadian Studies, World Studies, Cultural Studies, and General Social Studies (e.g. Anthropology, Christian Theology, Classics, History, Human Geography and Planning, Native Studies, Philosophy, Political Science, Psychology, Religious Studies, and Sociology).

The Honors in Mathematical Physics program gives you the opportunity to combine studies in high-level mathematics with studies in high-level physics. The program is designed to teach you how mathematics is fundamental for theoretical and experimental physics and how physical systems can be described and analyzed mathematically. By completing this degree you will be well suited to pursue graduate studies in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, Physics, or Engineering.
