Why study Physics? (Specialization program)

Our Physics Specialization program is designed to build a strong background in numerous areas of modern physics, covering topics from mechanics, thermodynamics and electromagnetism to areas like laser spectroscopy, optics, electronics and more. The Specialization degree has a structured curriculum that provides a focused education while also allowing you to direct the degree towards a chosen sub-field of physics.

Physics can also be taken as part of a BSc General or BSc with Honors degree.

Why take the BSc Specialization degree?

The Bachelor of Science Specialization degree provides a focused education in one program. You will take most of your courses in your main subject area, and are expected to maintain a higher standard of academic achievement. A Specialization degree can provide the background to help you proceed to a higher degree, but its primary function is to provide a comprehensive education at the undergraduate level.

This program can also be taken as part of a BSc Honors degree.

Why take the BSc General degree?
The Bachelor of Science General degree offers a wide variety of majors and minors, allowing you to create a diversified degree based on your interests. Majors must be in Science, but minors can also be from courses offered by Arts; Business; or Agriculture, Life and Environmental Sciences. You can also take a double major in Science.

No environment affects us as profoundly as that of the family. Family Science examines topics and teaches skills in areas such as parent-child relationships, family relations, community diversity, community development, sexuality, family challenges, aging, family finance, and more.

Economics studies how a society manages, produces, and distributes its wealth. By studying economics, you will develop analytical skills to help you evaluate the costs and benefits associated with any action. You will be exposed to a blend of theory and methodology courses that will help you learn the analytical tools necessary to evaluate and solve complex problems. You will learn from a faculty that is dedicated to teaching and has one of the strongest research records in the country.

This major can also be taken as part of a BA Honors degree.

Why study Conservation Biology?

This program will teach you to apply the principles of biology, ecology, social science, economics, and statistics to the conservation of species and landscapes. From ecosystem management to endangered species conservation, you’ll learn how to help protect natural spaces and promote ecological well being for the benefit of all.

Why study Environmental and Conservation Sciences at the University of Alberta?

Our BSc in Environmental and Conservation Sciences degree in the Faculty of Agricultural, Life and Environmental Sciences gives you the opportunity to study and develop real-world solutions for environmental issues such as land conservation, water conservation, biodiversity, and adaptation to climate change. You’ll also have the chance to participate in a three-week field school as well as a project-based capstone course.

Study the processes that occur within all living organisms, including the regulation of functions at the sub-cellular, cellular, tissue, organ, and whole-organism levels, as well as their interactions and integration. Specific areas of study include endocrinology, neurophysiology, developmental biology, immunology, cell signaling, toxicology, and environmental physiology in a wide variety of organisms.

If you are not sure which major you would like to pursue, you can take an Undeclared major. This enables you to take a variety of classes to determine exactly where your interests lie. 

Why study Arts at the University of Alberta?
The Faculty of Arts boasts one of the most diverse Arts programs in Canada, offering top quality educational opportunities that prepare students for successful careers in every sector of society. With over 900 distinct courses in the humanities, social sciences, and fine arts, you will find an academic pathway for you. Your studies will be enhanced by the rich insights that our nationally and internationally recognized faculty members bring to the classroom through unique insights drawn from their research and advancement of human knowledge. Academic excellence, innovative problem-solving, and experiential learning opportunities beyond the classroom, such as Community Service-Learning and Arts Work Experience programs, will give you the tools to thrive in a diverse and increasingly complex workplace.

Classics involves the study of ancient cultures – particularly, the literature, history, and art of the great civilizations of Greece and Rome, from the period of about 500 B.C. to A.D. 500. Courses are also offered on the Ancient Near East and Egypt. During the Spring and Summer terms, you’ll have the opportunity to take courses in practical archaeology at excavation sites in Italy and Greece.

This major can also be taken as part of a BA Honors degree.

Why study Arts at the University of Alberta?

This program prepares you to become a professional sport coach. You’ll gain both a theoretical understanding of, and practical experience in, the scientific, sociological, and pedagogical aspects of coaching. The program emphasizes real-life coaching scenarios, as well as the integrated and complex nature of coaching and all that underlies the practice.

This major is taken as part of a Bachelor of Kinesiology (BKin) degree, which takes an interdisciplinary approach to the study of human movement, examining both the arts-based and science-based aspects of Kinesiology and allows you to specialize in an area of study.

We also offer a BSc in Kinesiology degree, which takes a more science-focused approach.

If you are applying directly from high school, you must enter into a qualifying first year of Engineering. This first-year curriculum is designed to give you a solid foundation and introduce you to the vast opportunities available. You'll not only increase your academic capacity; you'll also discover how you can shape your future career
