Economics studies how a society manages, produces, and distributes its wealth. By studying economics, you will develop analytical skills to help you evaluate the costs and benefits associated with any action. You will be exposed to a blend of theory and methodology courses that will help you learn the analytical tools necessary to evaluate and solve complex problems. Why study Statistics?

Statistics involves collecting, analyzing, and interpreting data, and calls for strong mathematical skills and an interest in problem-solving. Statistics and statistical modelling are essential and in-demand skills that are used in many types of research and industries, from science and medicine to economics and finance.

A statistics major or minor in the BSc General degree is designed to provide a broad view of the discipline and allows for customization and flexibility with courses and program direction.

The Bachelor of Science General degree offers a wide variety of majors and minors, allowing you to create a diversified degree based on your interests. Majors must be in Science, but minors can also be from courses offered by Arts; Business; or Agriculture, Life and Environmental Sciences. You can also take a double major in Science.

Why study Political Science?

Political science is the study of power and governance. You will have the opportunity to learn from award-winning teachers and leading international researchers who will challenge you to think broadly about power and the responsibilities of engaged citizenship. Music is the art of human expression through sound. This program is an excellent degree for those wanting to explore music in a self-directed fashion. Students can specialize in music theory, music history, world music, or Composition and Sonic Arts, combining critical thinking and personal expression.

Why study Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology? (Specialization program)

• This program focuses on molecular structures and the processes of cellular life and their roles in the function, reproduction, and development of living organisms.
• In the first two years of the program, you’ll concentrate on topics in genetics, microbiology, and plant molecular genetics; after that you can pursue your own area of focus.
• This program can be taken as part of a BSc Specialization or BSc Honors degree.

Cell Biology takes a coordinated approach to the study of cells – the basic units of life. It integrates all the other life sciences in studying cells from the point of view of how they function. Courses in protein function, gene expression, and developmental biology will provide you with a comprehensive cell biology background and prepare you for entry into the workforce, graduate school, or a professional program such as medicine.

Cell Biology can also be taken as part of a BSc with Specialization degree.

This program gives you the opportunity to focus on the emerging field of nanotechnology, giving you an introduction to the processes involved in the fabrication of nanoscale integrated circuits and in designing the tools necessary for the mass production of nanoscale systems.

The University of Alberta is a leader in nanotechnology and nano-scale engineering. We are home to the NanoFAB Micromachining and Nanofabrication Facility, the Integrated Nanosystems Research Facility, and the Nanotechnology Research Centre.

Co-op option
This degree can be taken as a Co-op (co-operative education) program. Through the Co-op program, you will have the opportunity to complete paid, supervised work terms throughout your degree. Co-op programs are great way to challenge yourself, gain relevant work experience, and make connections to industry before you graduate!

Most co-op programs include five work terms lasting four months each, in addition to the usual eight terms (four years) of full-time study. Therefore, co-op programs require five years to complete.

Why study Second Languages? (Secondary Education)

• Do you dream of becoming a language teacher? We offer instruction in several popular languages that can be taken as a major and/or minor as part of a Bachelor of Secondary Education degree. For each language major, emphasis is placed not only on basic speaking and writing skills but also on an understanding and appreciation of the history and culture of that language.
• Available language majors are Cree, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish, Ukrainian, or Other.*
• *It may be possible to arrange a program for a language other than those listed here, provided it is offered in the school system. Please contact the Second Languages Advisor before you apply.

Why take the Nanoengineering Option in Engineering Physics?

This program provides an introduction to the physics problems associated with engineering at the nanoscale level. You will have a wealth of resources at your disposal, including the Micromachining and Nanofabrication Facility, as well as the recently established undergraduate nanotechnology lab.

This Option is taken as part of an Engineering Physics degree.
