Why study Computing Science? (Specialization program)

The BSc Specialization in Computing Science is very unique as it combines the structure of a Specialization degree with elements of customization often found in the General Science program. Nicknamed “Computing and X”, this program allows you either to study a concentrated area of computing science or to combine the study of computing science with another discipline, thus creating a very tailored degree.

Our CS department has expertise in several exciting of areas, including Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, Multimedia and Computer Games, Software and Database systems, and Machine Learning and Bioinformatics. Together, we are changing how computing science is being taught.

Computing Science can also be taken as part of a BSc General or a BSc with Honors.

Why take the BSc Specialization degree?

The Bachelor of Science Specialization degree provides a focused education in one program. You will take most of your courses in your main subject area, and are expected to maintain a higher standard of academic achievement. A Specialization degree can provide the background to help you proceed to a higher degree, but its primary function is to provide a comprehensive education at the undergraduate level.

This program can also be taken as part of a BSc Honors degree.

Engineering physics intersects a variety of engineering disciplines together with mathematics, applied physics, and the natural sciences. The University of Alberta's Engineering Physics program starts with a strong foundation in mathematics and physics and builds upon these principles through active research projects in areas such as fusion energy, microelectronics, robotics systems, and fibre-optic communications. The program offers a wide range of opportunities upon graduation, preparing you to meet unique engineering challenges.

Co-op option
This degree can be taken as a Co-op (co-operative education) program. Through the Co-op program, you will have the opportunity to complete paid, supervised work terms throughout your degree. Co-op programs are great way to challenge yourself, gain relevant work experience, and make connections to industry before you graduate!

Most co-op programs include five work terms lasting four months each, in addition to the usual eight terms (four years) of full-time study. Therefore, co-op programs require five years to complete.

Specialization option
As part of this program, you can choose to take a Nanoengineering Option.

Our Honors Physics degree is designed to build a strong background in numerous areas of modern physics, covering topics from mechanics, thermodynamics and electromagnetism to areas like laser spectroscopy, optics, electronics and more. The Honors degree includes a special project that is completed under the direction of a department member and is an excellent path for further advanced education in Physics.

Physics can also be taken as part of a BSc General or BSc with Specialization degree.

The Bachelor of Science General degree offers a wide variety of majors and minors, allowing you to create a diversified degree based on your interests. Majors must be in Science, but minors can also be from courses offered by Arts; Business; or Agriculture, Life and Environmental Sciences. You can also take a double major in Science.

Why study Petroleum Engineering? (Co-operative)

Petroleum Engineering is more than just oil and gas: in addition to energy, petroleum-based products such as plastics are key components of virtually every consumer product and medical device we use.

Petroleum engineers apply scientific understanding and technology in the extraction and management of hydrocarbon resources while also exploring ways to preserve and protect the environment.

For the past five decades, the University of Alberta has offered the only accredited BSc Petroleum Engineering degree program in Canada. Situated in Canada's primary oil and natural-gas producing region, we offer our students a distinct advantage by providing numerous research opportunities within the petroleum industry.

The Nutrition Honors program is a specialized, research-based program focusing on nutritional science and the related physical, health and social sciences. This program prepares you for graduate-level studies, or for a career in the health sciences, health promotion, education, or research in the private or public sectors.

This is an interactive, hands-on four-year degree program that will prepare you for a range of careers dealing with animal health. It a great option for completing your pre-veterinary medicine requirements. 

Other educational opportunities in this program include:

• Understand the biology and behaviour of companion animals as well as the human-animal bond.
• Discover the connection between animal health and the safety & quality of the food supply.
• Apply your knowledge and skills while completing real-world projects and case studies that examine issues faced by the animal health sector, the food production industry and government.
• Develop hands-on skills through access to an extensive network of animal research facilities.

Most resources that cannot be grown or harvested need to be extracted from the Earth by mining engineers. Mining engineers are involved in every aspect of resource extraction, applying science and technology to plan, design, manage, and optimize mining and mineral projects around the world.

The Mining Engineering program at the University of Alberta is the biggest of its kind in Canada, offering a broad-based program covering subjects ranging from surface and underground mining to physical and mathematical sciences. Examine planet Earth: the materials from which it is made, the processes that affect these materials, and the origin and evolution of life. Our Geology degree is certified by the Association of Professional Engineers, Geologists and Geophysicists of Alberta (APEGGA) and includes a number of field placements, which give important hands-on training to supplement the knowledge taught in classrooms.

Geology can also be taken as part of a BSc with Specialization degree.
