Media Studies examines the content, history and effects of media on our social, political and cultural systems. You'll learn about how different media can be used to communicate different messages to different audiences. Explore the dynamics between various types of media and learn how media influence the way people act - in business decisions and in their personal lives, and how human beings respond to each other's communicative actions related to identity, power, and belonging.

Focus your creativity and your interest in world events, storytelling and social media on a degree that can lead to a variety of exciting careers. You'll learn to navigate, analyze, critically evaluate and contribute meaningfully and ethically to today's global media environment.

You'll study current and emerging media types, and learn the foundational theory to understand the development and history of media, from the printing press to social and mobile media.

The Bachelor of Commerce is a four year degree program. The program provides students with a background in diverse areas of Business along with in-depth study of a specific area of interest.
Students are also able to explore disciplines offered in other University of Alberta faculties through program electives providing a well rounded degree. The BCom program provides students with a basis for self-learning through actual experience and the opportunity to develop comprehensive analytical skills.

This combined program allows you to complete two degrees from the Faculty of Science and the Faculty of Education — a Bachelor of Science (with Specialization) and a Bachelor of Education (Secondary) — in just five years, preparing you to become a high school or junior high teacher in your area of expertise.

Why study Psychology? (Specialization program)

The BSc Psychology program focuses on how the brain functions, and how we perceive, learn, and forget things. You’ll gain an understanding of areas like perception and motivation, behavior, and cognitive development, with emphasis on the physical, biological and mathematical sciences.

Our Specialization Psychology program offers the greatest amount of flexibility in the number of psychology courses you can take. Course span a variety of topics, from Cognitive Psychology and Behavior Modification to Abnormal Psychology and more.

Psychology can also be taken as part of a BSc General or BSc Honors degree.

Why study Second Languages? (Secondary Education)

• Do you dream of becoming a language teacher? We offer instruction in several popular languages that can be taken as a major and/or minor as part of a Bachelor of Secondary Education degree. For each language major, emphasis is placed not only on basic speaking and writing skills but also on an understanding and appreciation of the history and culture of that language.
• Available language majors are Cree, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Spanish, Ukrainian, or Other.*
• *It may be possible to arrange a program for a language other than those listed here, provided it is offered in the school system. Please contact the Second Languages Advisor before you apply.

This combined program, offered jointly with the Faculty of Education, allows you to earn two degrees in five years, preparing you to become a teacher for Grades 7-12 while providing you with additional expertise. The first three years of this program are taken in the Faculty of Native Studies, while the last two years are taken in the Faculty of Education. You can choose to major in either Native Studies or Cree.

Why the Faculty of Native Studies?

We are the only independent Faculty of Native Studies in Canada, with small class sizes and a diverse student population of both Indigenous and non-Indigenous students. We are student-centered, with a close-knit community of students, professors, and staff. We host regular Tea and Bannock potlucks, an annual tipi raising and take-down, and Games Night with the Dean.

We are research-focused, with opportunities for undergraduate students to participate in research projects. Our courses incorporate traditional Indigenous knowledge and heritage as well as contemporary Indigenous experiences.

This program provides you with an understanding of and appreciation for the importance of physical activity as it relates to health, fitness, and well being throughout one’s lifespan, with an emphasis on biological, psychological, and sociological factors.

This major is taken as part of a Bachelor of Kinesiology (BKin) degree, which takes an interdisciplinary approach to the study of human movement, examining both the arts-based and science-based aspects of Kinesiology and allows you to specialize in an area of study.

We also offer a BSc in Kinesiology degree, which takes a more science-focused approach.

If you are drawn to the life sciences and have varied interests, you will find the Biological Sciences major (or minor) an excellent choice. Whether your interest lies in animal, plant, or human life, this degree is designed to provide a broad view of the life sciences and allows for customization and flexibility with courses and program direction.

Why take the BSc General degree?
The Bachelor of Science General degree offers a wide variety of majors and minors, allowing you to create a diversified degree based on your interests. Majors must be in Science, but minors can also be from courses offered by Arts; Business; or Agriculture, Life and Environmental Sciences. You can also take a double major in Science.

Build a career in human ecology with this four-year degree program. This multidisciplinary field explores relationships between people and the environments they interact with most closely. Both dynamic and applied, Human Ecology provides graduates with the necessary tools to understand and enhance everyday life.  You will have the opportunity to:

• Help individuals, families and communities reach their full potential.
• Understand the social, political, economic and cultural context of family and community life.
• Examine the creative, technical, historical, cultural, and applied aspects of clothing and textiles and interiors.
• Focus on issues of fashion sustainability related to the production and consumption of textiles and clothing.
• Participate in a 200-hour Practicum Placement, turning your classroom learning into real world experience.
• Become a Professional Human Ecologist (P.HEc.) once you graduate.
