Why study Cell Biology? (Honors)

Cell Biology takes a coordinated approach to the study of cells – the basic units of life. It integrates all the other life sciences in studying cells from the point of view of how they function. This program examines the scientific aspects of animals and livestock, including physiology, genetics, biochemistry, nutrition and behaviour. Youâll gain knowledge and practical skills in animal production systems including dairy, swine, beef, poultry, and diversified livestock.

Why study Ecology, Evolution, and Environmental Biology? (Honors)
This program focuses on the interactions of organisms with their environment, the diversity of organisms, adaptations, and the mechanisms underlying evolutionary change. You’ll gain foundational knowledge in plant, animal and microbial ecology and evolution, studying at the level of individuals, populations, communities and ecosystems, and at a variety of spatial and temporal scales.

This program can be taken as part of a BSc Honors or BSc Specialization degree.

Why study Music? (Secondary Education)

Do you dream of becoming a Music teacher? Music (Wind Band) can be taken as a major or minor as part of a Bachelor of Secondary Education.

Areas of focus include Instrumental Ensemble, Aural and Keyboard Skills, Music Theory, Woodwind Techniques, Brass Techniques, Percussion Techniques, Choral Techniques and Pedagogy, Band Techniques, and Conducting.

You can also take this major as part of a Bachelor of Music / Bachelor of Education combined degree.

Why study Secondary Education at the University of Alberta?

Teaching is a calling, and we are dedicated to helping you become the homeroom teacher that your students will remember for a lifetime. Our Secondary Education program in the Faculty of Education prepares you to pass on your love of learning and discovery in almost any subject to students in grades 7-12. You’ll choose two areas of specialization — a major and minor — allowing you to pursue your passion and customize your experience.

The Secondary Education program includes a five-week Introductory Professional Term (IPT) and a nine-week Advanced Professional Term (APT). You will typically teach in your Major subject in both your IPT and APT.

This degree is normally taken as a four-year program but can also be taken as an after-degree. Upon completion of this program, you will be recommended for teacher certification in Alberta.

Why take an Undeclared major?

If you are undecided, you may apply with an Undeclared major or minor. Please note that both a major and a minor are required for graduation from the BSc General degree. (Alternatively, you can select a double major, with no minor.) You are encouraged to make your selection within the first few years of university. You can only enter into an Undeclared major as part of a BSc General degree.

Why take the BSc General degree?

The Bachelor of Science General degree offers a wide variety of majors and minors, allowing you to create a diversified degree based on your interests. Majors must be in Science, but minors can also be from courses offered by Arts; Business; or Agriculture, Life and Environmental Sciences. You can also take a double major in Science.

Planning is the study of land use, resources, facilities, and services, as well as the physical, economic, and social well-being of communities. Planners help decide what gets built and where, from roads and transit to parks and housing developments.
The BSc Specialization program takes a scientific approach to planning, with a focus on elements such as environmental management and the use of geographic information sciences.

Biochemistry explores the chemistry of living organisms and the molecular basis for change occurring in living cells, providing the basis for practical advances in areas as diverse as medicine, agriculture, veterinary medicine, and forensics.

The Honors Biochemistry degree is a structured program that includes a directed research project in the senior year. Linguistics is the scientific study of human language. It explores the many intricate rules that govern and structure all human languages, including grammar and phonetics. Linguistics also offers understanding of the physical, mental, and social processes that surround all verbal and non-verbal communication.
